Their forum has gone nuclear mushroom cloud. It's the FFA/Victorian police/rival fans/ground security/someone else's fault but certainly not theirs.

Plenty of laughs, you would think they were the first club ever to be punished for their fans behavior. Not as if its even a penalty given its suspended.

All a bit of a beat up really and probably cymbalises what is wrong with organised spontaneity these days.

Still, it might help snare a few more casual punters.

Thanks Everton. I was just getting to that...

The part I find funny is the 'well its not my job to do the search' and 'oh usually they get let off then flopped under my seat. I have no idea who lets them off'. I mean piss in my pocket and tell me its raining but they know exactly whats going on. Any decent human would be saying this shit is not on.

A surreal element is introduced by the fact that the FFA own Western Sydney Wanderers.

As one Western Sydney supporter points out:

"I think it should be a fine but as the FFA owns us they can't fine themselves and want to put out an strong message."

1] The Fun Police would never allow fans at Westpac to actually enjoy themselves. Any instrument etc would always be banned. 'm surprised we're even allowed small flags in. I had my old wooden rattle taken off me last year and it didn't even get a twirl out of it. Wankers!

2] The day the Nix have to have a fan stand on some pedastool with a bull horn to get the crowd going is the day I lose all faith in the YF faithful. I think it's friggen stupid and embarrassing. Surely there are enough loudmouthed Australians to get a crowd going?? Do they not think it looks tacky? I've not seen it done in the UK or Europe or anywhere else at a football game.

3] All we want is to have fun and have new people come along and have some fun too. The team are now doing ok, so really, the Wellington public need to come along and make a positive difference. I'm sure the players would love a big crowd there on the 12th.

I would pefer the fans to be punished rather than the players through point deduction, like in italy (even though it hasnt really worked there) where they ban the fan sections for the next game etc. could you imagine how pissed the RBB would be if only the nix away supporters were allowed in the stadium lol

In a totally eye candy-ish and not really related to the actual game way.

I'd actually prefer some bogan standing on a ladder with a loud speaker trying to conduct the crowd than a bevvy of stunning lasses in skimpy outfits trying to be all positive and sh*t like that.

As a compromise, how about Batucada set themselves up near the family zone?.  That lot are as quiet as a library - punctuated by groups of kids starting off their own chants (not the parents so much).

NFL like cheerleaders are pure eye candy as are the ones we get here for super rugby but at college and highschool football especially they lead the crowd with chanting etc and throw in the ocassional routine/dance to punctuate it all. So we need the likes of hard news, boxey, dale and smithy dressed in little skirts and waving pom poms at the front of the fever zone. Just so he doesnt feel left out, lonegunman can do the same down the other end of the pitch.

1) Totally agree about the Westpac fun police. They and their rules are so conservative and oppressive - yet in all the years of the Phoenix there has never been any real trouble with the crowd at all. Yet Red Badge acts like there is a riot just waiting to happen... its just dumb. They sure are not doing their part to make the stadium experience better.
2) I agree - although the wider crowd is pretty disconnected with YF or any other more active form of crowd participation. Should ieas and initiatives to make it all more fun for everyone be the business of YF? I think it should be if we want to support the team in all ways.
3) Totally agree this is essential. What more can YF do to help make this happen? I know things are done but it seems to me that more is needed. That is why people are suggesting 'crowd inclusive' ideas like songbooks, chant leaders, drums or whatever. Some of these ideas make some people uncomfortable - so what are the options? What works elsewhere (beyond winning more games - which sadly we cant make happen?)

Playing devils advocate. Why do we assume in YF that everyone attending wants to to standup and make a lot of noise.I would suggest that many attending have no interest in the antics of the called active supporters.Lets not kid ourselves it dosnt really matter what we do to support the team, the BIGGEST influence on attendances will be results. This is where the clubs marketing needs to be stepping up big time after our recent results.

As an aside i got told yesterday that train services wont be back in action till the 13th,if thats the case it could have a big affect on the crowd.

Not devils advocate at all there Ballane, I agree completely. The people who want to sing and chant and stuff are already attending games. Casual fans just aren't as into the whole active support thing as we are.

Also, on the trains thing, they are back in action tomorrow. http://www.tranzmetro.co.nz/Detail.aspx?ID=e65f453d-2471-4830-aa6b-312d7932826e

Its always good to look at the devil's advocate position. It makes people question assumptions and think a bit more widely. Mind you in history it also often ended up with the advocate getting burnt at the stake :-) I don't think it is about boosting YF type support - but more about wider fun and engagement that makes going to a nix game better than spending the time somewhere else.
Good points though. Part of what the club could be doing - possibly assisted by investigation/info from YF and other keen supporters/stakeholders - is looking at examples of what works successfully elsewhere - especially when  trying to build its long term sustainable baseline support. The club is trying things but could there be more? Results help but they go up and down. The club and its keen supporters needs average crowd size to increase by 20-30% irrespective of results. That is something to focus on. Transport is one of the factors - and its a bummer that the trains are off just when we have a home game after one of our rare winning streaks...

About the trains Patrick i heard they hadnt been able to finish all the work so its going to be a week later.( i could well be wrong but thats what i got told.)

What i was also getting at was there are also supporters who attend our games who dont want to take part in chanting etc and we shouldnt assume everyone does.

Could you look at with seating for games YF active and non active bays these could be side by side. Active bays would be fans who want to stand up all game singing and chanting for 90min. And either side have the fans who would be less active wants to be seated for parts of the game. With this you would be able to have more lead and response chants getting more people involved though out the game. I'm not saying we do the same but WSW 'who do we sing for' chant gets the whole stadium getting involved. If we were able to get the fans who are not sitting in the active area of the stadium involved wouldn't this create a better atmosphere though out the game and getting more people excited to come to games regardless of the results on the field as they are having a good day out.

Well there's the 'all the Phoenix stand up' but only about half the people stand, nobody joins in with the chanting. We just have a shit stadium, everyone's too far away from each other and it's awkward getting involved sometimes, especially with only 5000 people. I think we just need to start winning games. Problem solved.

yep

YF are a great part of the atmosphere and draw-card for getting along to Nix games - doing exactly what you do now.  Varied chants, witty, situation related and not an incessant din.  I dislike watching WSW games on TV because of the constant tuneless racket, and the big Yellow Army chant a couple of games ago was good fun, and impressive, but on reflection if you did that for half of every game I think watching with ear plugs would start to get attractive.  Battacuda doing the pre-match stuff I quite enjoyed but, again if you had them going half the game leading chants I think it would be ear plugs or stay at home.

We have fair weather fan friends who are starting to want to come along again.  It all comes down to playing well and winning.

As an aside, you would maybe be surprised how quick a chant gets out of synch - if it goes more than a couple of bays outside you guys.   "Come on Phoenix", for example, simple and well known and hence gets a wider join in factor, gets totally a rabble and turns into a bunch of separate rhythms in different parts of the crowd pretty quick if more of the stadium joins in.

I'd say just keep doing what you're doing - enjoying yourselves singing chanting and creating atmosphere and look for results to boost the crowd is how I'd see it.

If you start getting big crowds then I think you need two bays at opposite ends starting alternating chants, cause the YF gets drowned out with general noise less than half way around the tin.  At the Bahrain game we had tickets on the opposite side of the big screen from you guys, same end.  Even there we could see you chanting and sort of hear you, but not really well.

Typical of the train service.

As for crowds. People whom don't wish to stand or join in the fun can choose anywhere in the stadium to sit. Once you're through the gates you can pretty much sit where you like although if a person has purchased that particular seat then I have seen few cause a fuss and have moved on leaving the seat to the ticket holder. Everyone knows the YF area and what to expect. It's been running for 6 years. I have no problem with people whom wish to concentrate on the game. That they are there is important.

You are quite correct with the fun Police behaving as if a crowd riot is about to kick off. Other than the semi naked female streaker at the Beckham game, can anyone remmber a fan actually trying to get onto the field? (Ignoring the All Whites game where one did get on the field and another broken an ankle trying to emulate him) I don't think anyone is interested to be honest. And I am also sure that visiting fans from the other A League sides will also tell you how happy they are and how friendly Welling fans have been towards them. I'd like to think we have a good reputation in that respect.

Marketing the game is very important and the 3 in a row angle should really have been exploited by now.
