Bugger, Patrick must be at Nix training. Just tweeted Siggy is out after re-injuring his hamstring.

Also Roy out for four weeks! I'm starting to feel like we are DOOMED!

He and Piney just tweeted Dylan Fox will play at CB this weekend, which more than confirms that doomed feeling.

Harsh..thats his position so bring it on.  Might score winning goal from corner.

Kriwhna out is aweful... but tbh I'm looking forward to seeing some other players get a real shot. An attacker could take the chance, get a confidence boost and help save our season

Glad to see Fox get a run. We have Manny and Sigmund out so it is a logical move.

Permalink Permalink

Take the die-hard fan emotion out of it and Sigmund has become a complete liability with his injury and now the coach says its a long term issue .. has done nothing for yonks .. at least the amount of YC's and fouls has dropped by half since he hasn't been on the field

Permalink Permalink

That's a bit harsh, last year Sigmund was better than Dura IMHO, but this year Manny has done well. If Manny was playing and Sigmund wasn't injured I wouldn't want him to go straight into the starting line up anyway.

Our starting line up is iffy, our bench is going to be spectacular.

Got any facts to back that statement up?

This season, we've averaged 3 yellows when Sigmund has played (inc his two). In the game where he hasn't played we average 3.66 yellows.

While a lot has been made of the players that we're missing, lets not forget that Brisbane are without their top 2 scorers (Maclaran and Borrello) who have scored 12 of Brisbane's 22 goals this season.

Just to give you an idea, Siggy went out injuried in Round 7 and we are now at round 13. (14 this weekend).

Upto his injury we had 19 Yellows, since his injury we have had 22, so not only has it not halfed but it went up.

Edit: and I see Dale beat me too it.

So nowhere near half then. Thanks!

If Smithy is still attending our training, could he send a smoke signal to Ernie that apparently Sergio van Dijk is coming off his contract in Thailand in January. Not as fast as Henrique but definitely an excellent injury cover for Krishna and Sarpong.

Please not Doyle and Appiah to start Jeff, give young McCarry a start at left back

So you want to pick a kid with no experience at HAL level to start in a position he does not play over 2 players that are far more experienced than him against one of the top teams in the league with a missing regular CB beside him? When we are missing more than a few regulars you want to further handicap us?

Your logic, as always, is sound....

I think you are right about this being the most likely lineup.  While Dylan Fox would give us more height and speed than Doyle, Tom Doyle is vastly more experienced (and is a current AW if it counts for anything).

Ernie would rightly try to prevent us being overrun early in the game, and Doyle would get my pick for starting the game ahead of Fox.

Ernie should be sacked if Fox isn't starting on Sunday.

What other reason can there be for his move here?

Jeff what better game to give the young man a game against a team that plays football other teams in the league do it with success. If you must play Doyle play him at CB if you must, its his best position anyway. Jeff why so much hate if people don't agree with your opinion Im just saying I think hes got a lot of talent and how will he get the experience you talk about give the kid a go and lets see what he's made of

Difference is you give those youngest a go with a senior/settled squad around them, you don't have six starters out and decided to also give an unexperienced youth a start. That's like giving up on the win now and throwing the boy on for experience.

But its even worse than that. No experienced team around him means there will be nobody around to hold him together when things start going wrong. He will be found out quickly and his confidence will be absolutely destroyed in his first game. What a brilliant way to debut a young player

In fact when I look at the team we are going to field I see what a good job Merrick has done this season overall. So many players out that we can't even complete the bench and yet when I look at the provisional team almost every player has at very least been blooded and proven at a league level in the full strength team and will know whats expected of them.

Moss - Moss
Gulley - has played games for our first team at right back and will know whats expected
Doyle - has just about made himself a starter at left back and knows the system at very least
Durante - Playing normal role
Danaskos - Same as gulley except on the left
Reira - playing normal role
Lia - playing normal role
Ridenton - has played that position on and off through the last 2 years including just about a full season 2 season ago
McGlinchey - normal role
Powell - has proven he can play there before
Appiah - played at A-league level before and has played a full game in that position (even though he didn't really last the 90)

I think merricks use of depth through the year has paid off and for sure left us in a much better situation right now than we could have been.

Pretty much this. Its not about agreeing with my opinion charger. Its about potentially destroying a young player if it goes tits up and I don't think anyone is giving the Phoenix less than a 3-1 loss at the moment. Build him up with mins here and there (of which I absolutely support) not throw him in the lions den and tell him to find his own way.

I suspect thinking about this now and your other posts, you are deliberately trolling.

When you look at the HAL experience of Doyle vs Fox, Fox has not much to his credit to be picked over Doyle. Doyle is a LB for us, but I think his better position is a left sided CB which he has played for the Weenix. It means he never gets dragged out of position, he does have pace but does not have to use it to get up and down, he is used to the league game and pace and potentially less likely to be exposed. He is also a tallish lad and tends to stay on his feet. I think he is a good replacement option but I accept that at the time of posting, I was not aware that Fox was training in that position with the team so what do I know.

I saw Fox on the 5-5 game on TV against HBU and he did not look that great so picking him does not inspire me with confidence.

TBH, I haven't seen Fox play at all in the ASB Premiership this season. We have two injuries at centre back and Fox should be next cab off the rank, so to speak. If he isn't given a chance here, I struggle to see how he will be given meaningful minutes this season. I can't honestly say I would pick Fox over Doyle. What I would say is that Doyle has not shown any signs that he is of the standard required. I don't think anyone here will argue that he is our long term centre back. I trust Merrick to make the right call here.

Doyle is not significantly worse than anyone else in our team over the last few games.

Based on his CV to date, I would expect him to rise up to the standard required of him on Sunday. I would not be able to ask the same of Dylan Fox - he may have the potential, and needs to be used more, but we should be able to expect more of Doyle than of Fox in that particular game. That is the game that sets apart "men from boys", to use old style parlance.

True. Looking forward to it. C'mon Nix. If Riera and Vinnie can nullify their midfield threat we might sneak a goal and win. Any result would be a massive boost.

Yes, lets get positive! Maybe Mike plays better without Roly in his neck and gives Blake, Aphia some service upfront. Lia another corner goal and we can draw!
