Why is Siggy not standing in front of the goal?

He doesn't even need to.

I'll be interested in seeing what shape the Nix players away on AW duty will come back home in.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

that's a huge call! I'd be happy if we managed a draw. Especially with Moss (he makes me nervous with his one/two mistakes per game)

I'd go with this

                Moss

Adams - Boxall - Dura - Caira

              Riera - Manny

Ifill - Hernandez - Kenny C

          Waffles

Bench: Spoons, Siggy, Hicks, Brockie, Boyd

I know Adams wasn't great on Sunday but I'm struggling to think of anyone else I'd rather have there. Also I rate Boxall so I'd keep him in over Siggy. Riera looks a much better player than Vince so lets get him in the middle now!

Could move Boxall or even Siggy over to RB? Not ideal, but probably better than Adams.

Or just put Bertos there ffs.

I'd rather Adams than Siggy but Boxall could slot in there okay.

Also interested to see what he does with Brockie - I'm not quite sure where he fits into the Merrick game plan but you've got to find a way to replace his goals if you leave him out; not easy

Yeah, I'd put Boxall on the right and Siggy in centre. Not ideal but better than Adams.

if Ernie is going to stick with a 4-3-3 then you'd likely see Ifill starting up front instead of Riera in the mids.

Most of that is OK, but if I was coaching WSW I would change Hersi from right to left and put him up against Siggy. Then we would be in touble for 90 mins.( that is if Siggy stayed on the park)

With the All Whites playing Wednesday then flying back from LA and flying on to Aussie, I'm not sure Ernie will start many of them. I expect to see Spoonley retain the keepers gloves and Dura replacing Adams, with Boxall going to RB. Brockie on the bench for Watson.

Is Leo back? If so, would have him at full back instead.

Merrick doesn't want Leo to play at right back for some reason.

Strange decision to dump one converted attacker-into-full back for another (Fenton) ...

Seems sound.
I don't there were any out and out disgraces. Yeah there was the talk about Lia and how Adams and Caira went in some peoples eyes but Ernie could do worse in rolling that same XI out again. Both Adams and Caira are new to that level and I would be interested to see how they went in a second game. You certainly don't scrap heap them on the back of one season opener - they were not that bad. I suspect Hicks and Adams would be the two most in danger anyway.

Sounded like Iffy was sick, so that is probably why Hicks started. So he will probably return to the starting line up also. Haven't heard if Caira is ok, never great when you see a player grabbing his knee.

I think the only thing to fear at WSW is the hostile environment. Definitely have one of the best groups of supporters by a mile. I don't think their team is anything special at all to be honest. Nix to win.

I hope Spoonley keeps his place. I thought he did quite well against the roar. He left his line and smothered, he CAUGHT the ball instead of punching it. Ok, he made the odd mistake but I felt a lot of confidence with him. Moss makes me want to take up smoking for the first time. Reminds me of "Spider" we had for a season or two. Shame we couldn't get back Reddy or Vuducovic.

I always find it weird when fans put up formation changes at this stage of the season. We've seen Ernie set out his entire preseason around a 4-2-3-1 shape. To think he's going to go all 1998 Alex Fergusson on it now is totally weird. Combine that with the fact that Riera is about as much of a winger as Boxall and I find that formation from SuperFrank totally bamboozling.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

This is more logical.

I can definitely see Boxall keeping his spot ahead of Sigs. I'd rather see Riera at right back and Vinnie stay in midfield (not perfect I know, but lesser of two weevils in my opinion). I reckon the attacking three will be exactly that, although if it was me I'd ditch Cunningham for Brockie asap.

Agree with that bench too.

That's not completely true. He did say that initially but later said Leo could fill in there when he got back from international duty. I think he will be picked at right back if fit.

This is what I think the team will be assuming everyone is fit...

                  Moss

Bertos Siggy  Durante  Caira

               Riera Muscat

Cunningham Hernandez  Brockie

               Hysugems

Spoonley, Boxall, Lia, Hicks, Iffill

Permalink Permalink

Until Ifill is 100% fit, I quite like him coming off the bench against some tired legs. So I'd go for:

                 Moss

Boxall     Siggy   Dura     Caira

         Riera      Muscat

Brockie       Hernandez    Kenny

                Stein

Bench: Spoons, Lia, Ifill, Hicks, Boyd

Don't really think that this will happen though. Will probably be what Marshy has above but with Lia instead of Riera.

Err no, I wasn't. Although in Paston's case he retired at the right time - goes out a World Cup hero at the right age. I don't think his last season was his best and he made the right decision.

Spoonley could well be worth the punt although I have not seen the Aussie fella in action.

This happens because the person posing the formation, has an affinity with a player that can't be left out so gets put in, or a formation they feel must be used without really understanding formations and how they should be set out. The formation is changed to shoehorn in that player. In that case, I would suspect its Brockie (even though Ernie has played 1 striker all preseason). Considering all of the talk pre-season has been about that 2nd DM spot, he is well and truly got his eggs in the 4-2-3-1 basket.

I also think people forget the Riera is a natural left footer (unless he was faking at ACFC) where if he was not in the midfield, he was at LB. For the Phoenix, I suspect he would play in goal if asked.

Especially when you consider that based on what I read on here, Gulley had it over him.

I wonder if Ernie is doing someone a favour plucking a kid from QSL

Must be it's so odd. Why sign a kid as RB/LB and not play him when that cover is required. People can say oh but hes not ready yet but REALLY? why sign a guy thats not ready. So over that kind of thinking...
