R2 vs WSW, Sunday 7pm SS1

The problem with Lia is that he tends to make basic errors in crucial territories - and those errors are so obvious and easily remembered (like yesterdays game, he passed the ball directly to opposition which put our backline under enomous pressure).

Scapegoat or not, it happens for a reason.

I think he just need to do the basics right, that will improve his game big time.  i would rather have him clearing the ball out than losing the ball 25m in front of the goal.

I fully admit his last 70min was OK, BUT, if he continues without improving he will be the weakest link in our midfield and those basic errors he makes will cost us points this season - the errors he made yesterday gave the WSW at least 2 good scoring chances, we won't be lucky all the time.

To further back up the point I make here: in the presason match vs Auckland City his back pass created a 1 on 1 but the Auckland striker couldn't finish, in another preseason match (forgot against which team) he lost the ball 25m out and the opposition scored.

Do the basics right, that's all I want from him.

It's so frustrating because it really is basic. It's passing. And he messes it up waaaay too often. You would think he was the one signed as injury cover from the ASB Prem, and that's being a bit harsh on ASB Prem standard.

This. I have bagged RBB in the past on many ocassions but yesterday they were pretty awesome. One negative though was the prick in the crowd with a whistle!

They make a lot of noise and it's all very coordinated, but yesterday I found myself thinking this is all a bit too structured. It's like they're working through a pre-determined run-sheet of chants that have nothing to do with what's happening in the actual game. Their 'capos' don't even watch the game, and when they do the poznan none of them are watching the game! (at a crucial time, when they should be baying like batshit trying to get their team over the line).

I dunno, just not my thing I guess. I think I prefer YF's more organic approach. Probably just jealous though.

I have a very strong opinion and can defend it well. I have no issue being put in my place if someone can put an argument together showing that. In actual fact, I welcome someone challenging me because I do enjoy good football talk. I am going to have to eat some shit for mjp2 over Kenny C I think and I had to eat shit on the Stein sub call. I am not scared of admitting it or being wrong.

i don't expect you to eat shit.  An apology for the "negative" and "ignorant" insults would be fine, but not required.

mind you a public shit eating would be entertaining and could be used as a YF fund raiser

As a past ad campaign has said "Football is a 90 minutes of emotions" and its okay to have them throughout.  Okay to come along after and analyse others posts...if u were in the crowd or pub there would have been similar views expressed throughout.  Thats what being a fan(atic) is.

I was really impressed with the number of people wearing WSW shirts in the crowd.  It almost looked like they must have been giving them away at the gate.

For some people that is what being a fan is, For me, constantly screaming Lia is shit, or If we don't score there we will never score is not my way of being a fan

My overwhelming thoughts in that first 20mins were

"what the h[eck] is going on here, we played so well last week" and

"jeez we pressed Brisbane so well early last game, guess this is payback/karma time"

Lots of criticism of Lia here.  I am not usually a fan of his play, and only caught the second 2/3s of the WSW match because I had to pick my girlfriend up from the airport, but I thought he played really well in the 60 minutes of so of play that I did see.  He broke up play, chased the ball and was usually in a position where he offered an easy pass to the ball-carrier.  It wasn't exciting stuff, but I felt that this was key to us maintaining possession so well.

Im not trying to sound high and mighty with saying this - but im actually surprised, after the last two seasons, that people still have a go at Brockie. that seems to be one of the biggest facts that most of the Lia defenders are missing. The reason we played poorly in the first 20 was primarily down to his poor passing and hesitation on the ball. Sure he defended well but just how many of those defensive tackles were made after he lost ball?

But how many of those times were his poor passes a result of being given a hospital pass or being double teamed by a side that presses very high or having no one make themselves available or by trying to play "out from the back" instead of just wellying the ball.

Often and I am not saying it is always the case with Lia by any stretch of the imagination, but it is not always the fault of the person who has made the pass that has gone astray. There are other factors that come into play.

In the First 30 mins there were plenty of reasons aside from Lia why we were supposedly playing poorly. Some credit needs to go to WSW for making us play poorly, giving us little space / time on the ball.

Yes there are better DM in the League, but we do not have that luxury at the moment. Lia has his bad points and frustrating moments but then so does every player. Brockie had a couple of crosses /  shots that ending in row Z yesterday. Hicks gave the ball away at least as many times as Lia, it is just that he is in a position that makes those giveaways look worse. 

It is a case of looking at the good he brings and balancing that with the howlers he does make.
