Probably be more inclined towards someone who has at least played the game at a decent level. Which Merrick didn't, interestingly.

I think Merrick is pretty limited really. He had a gameplan which he was able to implement with decent players at  Victory at a time when the league generally wasn't of a very high standard. Won 2 titles but was eventually found out at Victory and in my view has been found out now. He seems to have a very narrow way of setting out his team and will not be moved on it, it seems.

Playing the game at a decent level really means nothing when it comes to coaching ability; plenty of coaches out there prove that.

I think all the best coaches try and mold the team into a certain overall playing style and identity (when you think of all the top coaches - and even a guy like Postecoglou - you think of a certain style they stick to even when going through rough patches). Ernie has tried to do that but hasn't got the players to make it successful, yet. I think he's quite aware that he needs a plan B sometimes - but Griffiths has been the only player to really provide that for him.

I think Adelaide's coach has done a good job of this; started slow as the team got used to the style, but have come on in leaps and bounds because they bought into it and have the players to carry it out.

I think playing ability and coaching ability have SOME relationship. It's not the be all and end all admittedly.

I think Merrick is on the right track. He is getting two decent Melb Victory players because he knows how to win HAL titles with MVU players. I look forward to eventually poaching half a team or more from Kevin Muscat, thus fulfilling Merrick's revenge wish of coaching MVU players again!

Im coming around to your way of thinking I think.  I dont like how the team shapes up and they seem handcuffed in approach. Worse of all is how many poor performances we have seen where nothing has changed next time or the time after that. Its all so predictable, and lacking in inspiration, and pretty dire to watch.  I think the only saving this assessment from a complete and utter shredding of Merricks team is the performances at WSW and Sydney where something different happened. The last 12 months has been a nightmare , from a position around Jan/Feb 2015 where we really should have won the league,and Im still not quite sure why we didnt,  we have become deadbeats.

Phoenix Statement on FFA disciplinary process

The Wellington Phoenix has sought explanation from Football Federation Australia on its Disciplinary Process following the reduction in sanction for Melbourne Victory player Besart Berisha.

The Wellington Phoenix has reviewed the video evidence made available to the Disciplinary Committee of the Football Federation of Australia hearing of Besart Berisha’s appeal and the determination made in this case.

The club is concerned with aspects of the Disciplinary Process and has sought explanation from Football Federation Australia on these matters.

The Wellington Phoenix is most disturbed that the overwhelming video evidence in this case was ignored in favour of two still photographs, along with testimony by employees of Melbourne Victory, which has subsequently called into question the reputation and character of our club captain Andrew Durante.

Andrew Durante has played over 200 A-League games and has had an excellent disciplinary record in that time.

Durante is an outstanding ambassador for our club and the A-League, and the Wellington Phoenix is concerned unfounded comments about his actions in the incident have been made public.

The club and Andrew Durante will be making no further comment on the matter.
