this is useful. I'm sure Patrick might comment,  but I agree it doesn't need to be used for everything and I suggested to him last night to try keep the volume a bit lower so it doesn't drown out the chanting etc.

Certainly a work it progress on how best to operate. I'm convinced it makes chants catch on quicker and stay longer.

This was my only feedback.  Especially at the start I found it hard to get into chants as the drum tended to drown it and the rhythm out.

I don't know if the drumming got quieter over time or if the chanting got louder but as the game progressed it fit into the chants better and better and sounded fantastic.

If the drumming didn't actually quieten and the crowd just got louder, then maybe start with quieter drumming untill the zone warms up.

This game didn't get a mention on One News last night.

The sports news was

Ireland won

The All Blacks lost

The Wallabies won

Andy Ellis Scored a try for the Barbarians

Steve Adams is a Beast

The Breakers won

Chelsea scored 5

On the drum. For every person telling me to play quieter last night, there was someone telling me to play louder. Yes, it definitely works better with some chants than other.

Have you tried muffling the drum? It will give it a bit of a softer tone and decrease the resonance if done properly. Should sound a lot better after that.

It was the fact we had won, if we had lost it would of been included.

Yeah I went way too loud at the start, sorry about that. Once I pulled it back it was working much better. I was banging that thing as loudly as I could by the end of the game with Krishna's on Fire though!

While it seems like it doesn't fit some of the chants, by using it those chants went on for longer than they would have otherwise so I think it's worth it. Maybe not in Oh Wellington though.

And as an aside, can someone tell me what is wrong with making a pass backward if you retain possession? A pass from a midfielder back to a Centre back who plays it forward is effective, you know all that "play the way you are facing" stuff.

Does A-Rod make mistakes, of course he does, but if you can not see the value he brought to the game on Saturday, particularly the first half, there is frankly no hope for you.

It does not even have to be facts Jeff. If you just actually watch the game and look at what he specifically does it is obvious. Maybe the problem is he tends to do things quickly so commentators rarely mention his name so that people who really can not work things out for themselves have no clue

Exactly, and his role is basically to relieve pressure if our midfield is being pressed too hard. He's great at getting into a good position to receive a ball from our guy and then play an accurate, well-weighted pass to someone who has the time to think more about what to do with it. Of course in that role he'll pass backwards often. The obsession with passing forwards reminds me of social teams I've been in, or kids teams you see, where everyone is convinced that the moment you have the ball the goal is to get it as close to the opposition goal as possible as quickly as possible, rather than retaining possession and trying to create a higher-percentage scoring chance.

This and some on saturday for about 5/6 minutes I focused on him and he got through a stack of work. Was surprised how often he was involved in some things. Seems he is destined to cop a bagging no matter howhat he plays. Surprised JD hasn't had a cracked at him as well.

No apologies necessary, its a welcome addition on the whole.

Krishna's on Fire and if I remember correctly Welly Oh were significantly better thanks to the drums.  I actually didn't object to Oh Wellington either, it was just the loudness at the start.

Either way thanks for bringing it in.

A penalty and a goal that was offiside are hardly worthy of accolade and his third goal... i'd expect anyone to bury that. All in all, i don't think he's hit form yet.

TV3 Sport did feature it, but only after EPL news, well after the Pukekohe car race item.

Surely this discussion is not new?  Is this the job for the club to raise with the media, for the A-League, for YF?

I liked the drum. I was cracking up watching for a different aisle as to how well Patrick has picked it up in a short time (with no training from the RBB). Also I think it was when we got our second goal? that Welly Oh sped up to a dance mix version - class

In theory it should be the media's job shouldn't it? But they don't seem to be doing it, so you're right, someone should be. I would expect the FFA to be pushing it with the NZ media, but maybe they delegated these responsibilities to the club.

You still have to think that A-Rod and Lia would be in trouble as DM against a superior attacking team.

However, these two are the best distributors from deep we've played there, not having played Mikey there of course.

At the moment, have to agree- Gui, Roly and Mikey fighting for two spots is how it seems to me, unless Mikey wants to play a little deeper.

I suspect had the All blacks put 20 on Ireland like everyone thought the Nix would have gotten a mention. Because they lost suddenly they have even more angles to cover (Irish supporters reaction, Irish rugby old heads reactions etc) and it gets bumped.

Not saying that it should have gotten bumped because of that, but an unfortunately reality of the dinosaur nature of sports reporting at TVNZ.

Think some of you expect the TV stations to do more than you can really expect them to do. Of course it follows rugby league and car racing. It's not as if our form has made us worthy of time.

I am not sure this argument is should be relevant. The Warriors or The Breakers get plenty of coverage even when they suffer losses.

We had a good game against the Jets, it was our first win in years, and there was some more TV3 coverage on Sunday night including Ernie cracking jokes. But it was the last item in the sports bulletin, after a couple of EPL highlights.

Yes I would like the sports media to do do a better job, and not double-guess me that I might be more interested in a result of a game between two minor EPL teams than a result between say Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory, let alone a result by the Nix, the only NZ team in the only serious competition available to us to take part in, and one that is improving (football-wise) every year.

It is a "poor cousin" style insecurity on part of our media, which as a nation we should well and truly be getting over by now.

It's a vicious cycle - the media don't give us coverage because no one cares, and no one cares because the media don't give us coverage.

The fact that it's behind the EPL in the hierarchy is BS too. I can't think of any other sport where a foreign club comp would regularly get better coverage than a local comp. The Breakers regularly get way more coverage than the NBA, for instance.

The only other example (if we're talking professionals) is probably motorsport with the F1 getting better coverage than the V8 Supercars.

If the Breakers hadn't won all of those titles they would get diddly squat local coverage. Lesson for the Nix there.

When the breakers were dominant the NBL was pretty much bankrupt and the Breakers were the financially dominant team, the Phoenix will never be able to match that level of success, the A-League is too close and the big teams are too far ahead financially. The salaries and salary cap in the NBL are also much lower than the A-League.

No doubt the success of the Breakers has played a part in it, but I think basketball is less threatening to rugby than football is, and doesn't have all the negative connotations in NZ that football does (for instance, diving, "being soft" etc). I also don't think the NBA ever penetrated the NZ market as much as the EPL and Champions League have, which means the NBL doesn't get as much of the it's not as good as" BS that we get.

You are way understating the affect of the NBA in NZ,NBA gear is one of the top selling lines here and dont under estimate  what affect "Adams" is going to have on the sports popularity.Do think us football fans have are to easy to blame others for the reason the game dosnt get the publicity we think it should.Far easier to blame rugby or league than our games own inadequacies maybe if we had been able to deliver a decent product on a consistent basis  we would have a reason to complain at the lack of coverage.

Adams is only in the last couple of years though, so that doesn't explain the historical difference. And yeah NBA gear is popular here but I'd argue that's more as a fashion statement among young kids mostly than because people actually watch games and follow teams. It's like how a few years ago it was popular to wear Ramones t-shirts but Ramones album sales didn't go up at all.

I think American sports are getting more popular here as you can get apps and all the digital content for decent prices, whereas before you were limited to the odd game or highlights. This is the first year I've bought NFL gamepass and MLB At Bat.

Hockey is interesting - it's like football on steroids with no diving but it's just a little too fast to watch for me. Must be great live though.

And also ESPN on sky, I know at my old job we used to watch the MLB at lunch because it was live at that time.

But, I think most US sports are too far removed from NZ sports to really catch on all the stopping and starting, espeacially in Gridiron and Basketball are pretty lame.
