Agree with Mullen, he had some good solo runs, great attacking game.

Mullen was suprisingly effective getting out of the defensive line. A feint and drop of the shoulder Messi would be proud of, and a Cruyff like turn to beat three would-be tacklers. What's his passing range like? Maybe a DM positional change next to Paracki would suit when Durante is back.

I'd keep Ridenton exactly where he is thank you, can't go dicking around too much with a decent midfield combination that's building nicely.

Totally, it looked a shambles when Ridenton was dropped and WeeMac played deeper. When WeeMac is back I hope either Finkler or Vidosic make way for him, the Paracki/Ridenton combo should be given more time to develop

My player ratings would be
Smith 5 Shouldve done better with the header
Mullen 8 Excellent in CB and some useful runs fwd
Fox 5 Looked shaky to me, but always gives his all
Rossi 6 Shaky in first half, much improved in second half. We don't usually have the luxury of being a one half player
Abbas 6 Very good runs fwd, too far from his opponent when defending
Paracki 7 Very sound, great strike for goal
Ridenton 7 Solid with Goran
Vidosic 6 Scored at an important time, needs to contribute more though
Roy 9 Outstanding assists and heart and work rate. A fine captain too.
Finkler 6 Not much happening in first half but much more influence in second. Nice goal
AK 7 Knows how to score. That's his job. Done.
Rufer 6 Did a good job in there
Watto 4 Offside
Parkhouse 7 Made an impact, lovely cross

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Has a club ever made an approach for Krishna? Considering the quality of some of the other players who have gone abroad, he surely is the equal and better of some.

And yet last year a lot of people were moaning about Moss always just hoofing it forward instead of trying to play a short pass. I'm all for the keeper playing it short to a defender but not when the defender is under pressure from an attacker which is what Smith does quite often. He did it a lot in the pre season game against Auckland City and has continued to. Maybe he is under instruction from the coaches that they want it played out from the back.

Does anyone know why Rossi started taking the goal kicks in the 2nd half?

Keegan can't kick past halfway which is probably why Rossi started taking the kicks. Could also be why he often plays it short.

IIRC, a big Dutch club made a play for him several years ago, but he wanted to stay in an English speaking league

Dunno what the general vibe is, but I think there's got to be a certain point where we all start considering Krishna as on of the club's Ifill-tier legends. 29 goals and 21 assists across basically 3 and a bit seasons is remarkable, and there have been many long periods of seasons where he has carried us. When Burns goals partially dried up, Krishna started scoring every week. When Burns left, he carried on that form until he got a lengthy injury. Last season again, while Barbarouses was sharke for half a season he was incredible. The stats don't lie, he's been f**king brilliant, but also his attitude. He never stops running, fearless contesting aerial duels against blokes twice his height, and has stayed loyal to us for 5 seasons. He's easily got at least 2 or 3 good seasons left in him too. What a guy

Flat track bully. He'll never make it in the A-League.

Yup, PSV tried to sign him back when he was a sprightly 22 year old at Waitakere

Always enjoy your ratings Oi Oi. Having just watched a replay I'd only quibble with Rossi's rating because apart from the crappy backpass he was actually very good in the first half. Definitely have him up around 8.

Loved Paracki's theatrical face-buried-in-hands goal celebration, like he'd just scored an injury time winner in a cup final. Obviously meant a lot to him. Also Kalu rushing over to the coach for a man hug after his penalty. A relief to get a win with some nice goals in the process but there is clearly a massive amount of work needed to get this team believing in itself and consistently playing to its potential.

I thought I heard in the Newcastle game the commentators saying that rumour has it Newcastle are having a crack for him.

It's exactly the same story as with Henrique, who trialled with us but Herbert did not want him so he went to Roar. After that for a while there were comments on AUS portals saying "Henrique, in whom Wellington Phoenix has expressed interest...." makinf it sound like a new thing.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Would anyone please be able to give a quick list of player ratings /10 for the game? I ask this as a fan who left Welly to get home early this morning, thinking nothing the Nix could do could top the All Whites, couldn’t get any updates on the drive

The guy doing this isnt a fan of Keegan's and starts by saying "here's the ratings and they're not pretty", and then all of the Nix starting outfielders get 7.5 or above (except Ridenton and Gui who he gives  7's)

However only one of Glory gets a 7, the rest below...

From what I've seen, Smith is anything but low on confidence. Blowing a kiss to Maccarone is not the actions of someone who doesn't believe in himself. Also not sure how Keegs playing out of the back is frightening when he's got the best pass completion of any keeper in the A-League...

There's a bias in those stats though. Of course keepers who pump it long more often will have lower pass completion than one who looks to pass short constantly. Whether it's an effective tactic or not is a question which is independent from how other GKs are playing.

I think he's doing an ok job, I think the real issue is the lack of a settled backline in front of him who are used to what he's doing and have a more intuitive sense of where each other will be. Hard to stick with a fluid passing game out from the back when your defenders are playing in different combinations every week.

yeah of course play style is going to affect it. He is 10% better than his nearest competitor though. I agree the backline is a bigger issue, have we fielded the same back 4 in 2 games yet?

He was at fault for the second goal though. While not necessarily regulation, I felt a GK would do better with that.

He does have some issues to work through and I do not believe we would be worse off with Moss (in fact I think better)

And I really don't care how many passes a keeper completes. His primary job is to stop the ball going in the net

Permalink Permalink

I'm happy to let Keegan keep playing. I would like to see him have a spell with a settled defense in front of him. Because every game has been a revolving door of defenders coming and going. If he had senior pros like Dura and Rossi in front of him right from match one, then life would have been easier. The other thing is that if you watch other A-League sides there are hardly any keepers making fault less games.

Roy is shaping as one of the Nix's legends. Shame he languished in NZ club football for so long. Ricki thought he was too small...but he is now one of the toughest guys around

Round 1 & Round 3, then you have to go back until probably when Tratt was at the club to find another instance of the same 4 players at the back.

In past seasons we've blames Moss, Paston et al for goals so its no different this year with Keegan. Sure he has a bit to work on but I'm a little proud that we have a young home grown talent footing it at this level - I'm excited for him and have gone from kind of rubbishing him to being a fan.
