Following on from last year's tremendous success, Yellow Fever will shortly launch the 2010 round of its Retro Ricki Youth Scholarship, in conjunction with the Wellington Phoenix.
2009 Scholarship winner, Marco Rojas, was so impressive in his time training with the Phoenix under the Scholarship he earned a contract with the club as one of its three U20 squad members. Rojas made his A-League debut at just 17 - coming off the bench away to Melbourne Victory - and has now made four appearances for the Phoenix.
The Retro Ricki Youth Scholarship is an opportunity for Yellow Fever members and all football people to play their own small part in the identification and development of New Zealand football talent.
As per previous years, fans will have the chance to both nominate and vote for their favoured Scholarship recipient. Nominations must be emailed to scholarship@yellowfever.co.nz while voting will take place, along with much discussion, on the Yellow Fever forums. Candidates need to be New Zealanders and young enough to qualify as Phoenix youth players (born after 1st January 1990 - we think). They may be male or female.
Voting will take place on www.yellowfever.co.nz to establish a shortlist of candidates. When fan voting is finished, Wellington Phoenix and All Whites coach Ricki Herbert and a Yellow Fever representative, will select a Scholarship winner from the shortlist.
Our lucky budding footballer then spends a week training with the Phoenix in Wellington in the build up to the 2010/2011 Hyundai A-League season. Yellow Fever covers the cost of their flights and accommodation.
Stay tuned to yellowfever.co.nz for more Retro Ricki Youth Scholarship updates.

Two Nayland College players.
Adam Smith, 17 - Nelson Suburbs, played for New Zealand U17 but failed to make the final squad for the world cup. Has had trials with english clubs, the academy at Hull even offered him a short term deal but turned it down to make sure he passed NCEA level 1 as something to fall on if the football didn't work out. Hull were also below the premiership at the time so he said the facilities weren't anywhere near as good as they are now. Equally capable off both feet.
Gagame Feni, 17? - Nelson Suburbs, top goal scorer at secondary school nationals, he's a solomon islander and is one of the brightest secondary school strikers playing in NZ. Has plenty of tricks, pace and an eye for the goal.Luis Garcia2010-03-28 05:01:26
