It happens.
This is a more unique situation; it’s not like someone who supported ManU under the Ferguson era switching to ManCity because they’re the ones buying the league and ManU are …manure.

It’s more like, you used travel across town because there was only one Bunnings around, now a new one has opened up round the corner, so you’re going to use that one now.

Doesn’t mean you need to go hating on WPX though.

Oh for sure. I think my post might have been a little misinterpreted.
I'm not criticizing people who choose to support both teams. I'm more talking about those that go all "LOL sMaLL tEaM eNeRgY lOoK aT yEr CrOwD nUmBeRs We OwN tHe NiX LMAO" while still picking out yellow lint from their belly buttons.

I certainly don't have the time or money to head down to Welly every couple of weeks as much as I'd like to and so I did initially consider getting an AFC membership because of the proximity. Ultimately decided that I wouldn't commit to attending every home game for a team that is not "my" team so it wasn't worth it for me. I totally get that other people's attitudes and circumstances might be different and I'm cool with that.

I'm just not cool with the unnecessary Nix bashing. That's like your favourite band being from overseas - you can't attend their gigs but still love them. Then a local band pops up and you start seeing them every weekend cause they're there and all of a sudden the original band is shark and you're throwing out all their records?

Don't know. Maybe I'm being too tribalistic about a bunch of dudes kicking a ball around or maybe I'm in a foul mood cause I'm back in the office after a long weekend.

This may be the most sense I've ever seen spoken on these forums. Kudos.

For me, football is a brilliant mix of both connection and tribalism. In my own circumstance I have previously lived in Auckland for far longer than I've ever resided in Wellington, but the difference for me ultimately was the connection, and that in turn breeds that tribalistic nature. For that reason I'll be in the cold, cold ground before I relinquish the 🟡⚫

In general though I have no concerns with people jumping ship. Given the unique circumstance with the emergence of this second NZ side it was always going to test where loyalties will lie.

What I would say to counter that previous paragraph though is if you have switched and are fairly ironed on in terms of your allegiances, then don't be jumping colours because either 🟡 or 🔵 is suddenly the flavour of the month. Nothing worse than a bandwagoner.

**Edit**
Sorry, forgot to add on, but good on Auckland as well for the engagement and establishing the hype and seeing the families and young kids in the stands. That's arguably been the biggest failure as a result of their 17 year hiatus - No one for these young ones to look up to on the football pitch week in, week out.

Sure, some might have gravitated towards the Nix in that time, but you can bet your bottom dollar that a lot more would have dropped off or even moved away from the game altogether or even worse, become Euro-snobs...

But has anyone 'jumped ship' and started bashing the Nix? I don't see any evidence of that.

From reading the AFC supporter FB groups, I think any 'hate' has come from folks who clearly have never liked the Phoenix. Like I doubt the now banned Port Soldier was ever a fan of NZ's first pro club.

Seen a few (presumably Auckland based) saying they have been Nix fans for awhile and now will support both NZ clubs, against Aussie teams. But they ain't the sort putting the boot into the Phoenix.

I'm not on FB so I wouldn't know but I have seen plenty of it on IG and from my exposure to the cesspit of doom that is Twitter. I accept that my first mistake may well be bothering to read comments on those apps, but the fact that you haven't seen evidence doesn't meant that the sharkty attitude doesn't exist.

Either way, this thread is about the derby so I'll leave it at that.

From a certain perspective, we are bloody lucky that Terry brought the franchise to Wellington.  If he had taken over the defunct Knights and kept them in Auckland, I suggest it would have been much harder to get a second ALM team going in New Zealand in that scenario.   But with the Nix having done the hard yards while based in Wellington and showing that it can be done with a smaller population base, suddenly the Auckland franchise also has legs to stand on.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Zero chance of Rojas you'd think. He'd likely first get mins with Weenix in the National League, before making an ALM squad??

Moreno a total unknown, you'd imagine will get his first mins via the bench. Chiefy & Griffiths will have done some quick scouting of his Colombian league games.

Lots of fascinating matchups some with AWs permutations. Saki verus Sutton verus FDV verus Payne. Rufer & Conchie up against Howieson. Barba, Rogerson, Mata, Randall and now Gillion all in the frame for 2026.

Can see a low scoring draw. Two good defensive units, and two high quality no nonense DMs in Rufer and Verstraete. Two scratchy attacks still working through the early season rust.

Though maybe one of Auckland's 3 Latino players goes all hot headed in tne big derby, gets a straight red and Nix get the win.

Moreno from the Envigo Academy, which produced James Rodriguez, Fredy Guerin, Jhon Duran. "a very fast technical player that loves to dribble one-v-one against defenders," - Steve Corica ... Now Baaabeque might have got me giving them credit…but sheep aren’t a particularly up to date reference. Aussie has about 3 times the sheep we do now and it’s obviously milk which has been the key export product for some time…
Image looks fairly good though!
