As an Aucklander myself I was worried I would start to form a connection with the new ‘local” team. After standing near the port in the most recent game I am very glad to say that I felt no emotion towards the game, something I worried I would start to feel.
Of course who doesn’t like a last minute winner, I was happy for them.

The port are very young group and I will not be showing off my Phoenix shirt anytime soon and will have my jumper on until I get to my seat at Mt Smart. A guy wearing a Phoenix shirt had full beers thrown at him and was being threatened by fans.
I know us fever fans respect opposition fans where we do not resort to physical violence and only get into it through chants.

So excited for this weekend. Drummer can we please get the biggest
👏👏  👏👏👏  👏👏👏👏 PHOENIX! As the players walk in. Let our boys walk into a wall of noise. Bring it on

Just curious that was something you actually witnessed, a Nix fan being abused and with beers thrown at him at Mt Smart?

Maybe they are figuring in probable road closures for broken water and sewer pipe repairs?
Ryan
They're giving themselves plenty of time because they're used to Auckland traffic and not a walkable and liveable city.

Lunch time pax hit: 11342

Pax doesn't include season ticket holders does it? So we'd probably be looking at close to a 15k crowd already when you take into account members

Pax excludes season tickets and Maccas Junior Nix. It might also exclude the tickets used for the tickets being given out in Wellington today but who knows.

Paddy Gower piece on STUFF.

Worth a read... clearly baiting AFC.

See you in 3 days people!

Paddy calling it like it is https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360468713/paddy-gower-auckland-fc-are-quite-fake-phoenix-are-nzs-real-pro-football-club

The ying to Paddy's yang.

I live in a football household. My three boys are big Phoenix fans, we all watch and enjoy their games together. That will not change, but we have also enjoyed watching Auckland FC’s first two games, and the kids have genuinely been excited by Auckland’s existence and early results.

The Phoenix are still No 1 for them, but Auckland are No 2. You would like to think that would be the case for most Kiwi football fans - they can support their team and enjoy good natured rivalry but, in the interests of the game in this country, you’d also hope both sets of fans will genuinely want each other’s club to thrive.

Pretty disgusted with some of the stuff i have seen posted  by SOME so called Phoenix fans on social media. WE dont want some of that attitude anywhere near the YF zone thanks.
Seems  we have some who like to play at keyboard warriors as well.

I'm still yet to see anything from either side to be honest, although in fairness I use facebook very rarely nowadays...

To be honest not into naming and shaming just pretty disappointed to not only see it but then the follow up insults to another Phoenix fan. Its also not the first of it i have seen while i get its a Derby game FFS its the first one why try and make it something its not.

But let’s not be too precious. Let the young ones have some fun, they don’t have to like other fan groups and can have some banter.  Nix and yellow fever need that next gen coming through.

Gosh I’ve even seen Some people on the Facebook pages that were telling people not to boo the other team. Come on.

Dont think anything about my post is being precious for 17 years many of us have supported the Phoenix without the need for any of the rubbish thats being said or posted .

Just because Auckland have come in and we have a Derby game its NO excuse to go all feral at all.

I understand the chant (also long time no see fella!) but thought Wellington was the home of coffee in NZ?
And most of the country likes a coffee with milk these days?

Equally we take a shot at the wine and Rob’s also got a vineyard too.

Think beating them by 4 and singing what’s the score for 30 odd minutes would be my favourite! Oh and we’re top of the league could also then come into play?

Yeah but we drink flat whites here.... non of that namby pamby latte stuff - buggered if I know what the difference is though haha
flat white should have less milk, what we call a large flat white is a latte. A regular flat white is a flat white.

Throwing away your Nix stuff just means you're an absolute wanker honestly. I've been backing the Nix for a long time as a marriage of convenience but Wellington simply is not my city, it's Auckland. Doesn't mean that I hate the Phoenix it's just that I'm and always shall be Auckland.

This is a more unique situation; it’s not like someone who supported ManU under the Ferguson era switching to ManCity because they’re the ones buying the league and ManU are …manure.

It’s more like, you used travel across town because there was only one Bunnings around, now a new one has opened up round the corner, so you’re going to use that one now.

Doesn’t mean you need to go hating on WPX though.

Oh for sure. I think my post might have been a little misinterpreted.
I'm not criticizing people who choose to support both teams. I'm more talking about those that go all "LOL sMaLL tEaM eNeRgY lOoK aT yEr CrOwD nUmBeRs We OwN tHe NiX LMAO" while still picking out yellow lint from their belly buttons.

I certainly don't have the time or money to head down to Welly every couple of weeks as much as I'd like to and so I did initially consider getting an AFC membership because of the proximity. Ultimately decided that I wouldn't commit to attending every home game for a team that is not "my" team so it wasn't worth it for me. I totally get that other people's attitudes and circumstances might be different and I'm cool with that.

I'm just not cool with the unnecessary Nix bashing. That's like your favourite band being from overseas - you can't attend their gigs but still love them. Then a local band pops up and you start seeing them every weekend cause they're there and all of a sudden the original band is shark and you're throwing out all their records?

Don't know. Maybe I'm being too tribalistic about a bunch of dudes kicking a ball around or maybe I'm in a foul mood cause I'm back in the office after a long weekend.

But has anyone 'jumped ship' and started bashing the Nix? I don't see any evidence of that.

From reading the AFC supporter FB groups, I think any 'hate' has come from folks who clearly have never liked the Phoenix. Like I doubt the now banned Port Soldier was ever a fan of NZ's first pro club.

Seen a few (presumably Auckland based) saying they have been Nix fans for awhile and now will support both NZ clubs, against Aussie teams. But they ain't the sort putting the boot into the Phoenix.

I seen a bunch of people filming themselves throwing their Phoenix shirt away.

And one of the biggest loud mouths is a former Fever scholarship winner!

Have to ask- what makes you feel parochial about being an Aucklander?

I was born an Auck but I couldn’t find any ra-ra Auckland feelings. I can vaguely remember the 80s rugby. Just a smug sense of being better than everyone else isn’t much of thing to chant about. I’ve got a sense of civic pride about the beauty of the city and all the festivals and cultures, but again that’s chill Sunday stuff.

Maybe if you’re generationally a member of the yacht squadron or something. Maybe it’s that I identify more Westie than blue bloods. Not sure.

Auckland is the largest Polynesian city on Earth and one of the most Asian cities in the South Pacific. I was born in Auckland but its the city which took my family in after political violence back home and its where all of my memories are tied around. There's obviously the Rugby factor with the Blues and all that stuff but at the end of the day its the breadth of culture and the fact that no other city in New Zealand has ever really felt like Auckland does to me. I wouldn't ever think about going for the Hurricanes over the Blues, Wellington over Auckland in the NPC etc. so I guess its just a continuation of the attitude that I love my city and love sports so enjoy the chance to be a bit tribalistic about it.

It is great to see some diversity in the stands and on the pitch with Auckland FC. Wiki tells me 39% of Aucklanders are born overseas, like the 4th highest proportion of overseas born folk of any major world city apparently.

Some of these people in the stands at Mt Smart, are likely new to watching and following football in NZ. That can only be a good thing.

I'm sure for this reason Auckland would love to sign Sarpreet Singh at some point. Somone should also tell them there is a striker (Matt Orr) in the Chinese Super League who is half NZ/half Chinese. Kiwi Dad

Won’t copy all those replies again, but nice.

Be interested to see if they can get the rail properly up and running with the CRL. Might really pick the pace up everywhere. A train every 5-10 minutes so you don’t need a schedule would be a good start. And then a few genuinely nice precincts around train stations. Plus it links a lot of places with the Chamberlain! You don’t have to plan, just get an inkling and there’ll be a train there soon.

Edit: Ahh newish and it’s where the Chamberlain was. Chamberlain permanently closed. Ooh well. Should be a decent short term bump.

Thanks mate, getting sick of some of the comments seeing on socials policing what people can and can’t say/do.

I fell in love with the club 17 years ago and have created so many epic memories, so whatever it takes to get more people interested even if it’s a bit of banter with an opposing supporter group or going hard against the opposition so be it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Otherwise it starts to feel a bit cliquey in my opinion. Embrace it people.

al-Taay didn't start last week, him coming in at least makes a dent in the loss of Rufer. Also, hooray for Marco (edit: and Retre. Hope all 3 of them are able to play significant minutes)

Also I've been quietly impressed with Conchie. He's definitely developed since last season. Will be an excellent chance for him to show he can foot it at this level.

Given that Rufer is a crucial player for us I hope he's not rushed back too soon. Better he misses some weeks now and gets his full fitness back.

I don't think he can play now since the ins and outs have been announced. Hopefully Retre can start otherwise our rear guard will be very exposed.

Conchie has been great but he is not as defensively minded as the Ruf, AL Taay is awesome and very good defensively but he has not made many appearances so far.

Im concerned... There is only one first derby ever, please don't lose, goddammit ill even take a draw if we can beat them with the Ruf up in Auckland
