Chris Shukka or someone?
There was a bit of touring sports group that inspired by our trip to the 2009 playoff, some of whom then went to Brisbane for test cricket and caught us win the league world cup. Further boosted by those efforts and how awesome Welly had been first around, we booked in for the Bocca Juniors game...
well. Toto looked good compared to the weather that day!
God, thinking about toto, we've had some god awful imports over the years. So many wasted spots. Last season was one of the better years where most of them were on the field at once. Or were capable of holding down a starting spot.
Sarpong was the worst. He wasn't even comically bad, not bad enough to be endearing or anything. Just bad. At least some of those other guys you can have a bit of a laugh about.

Sarpong also had the misfortune in that people assumed he was actually good because of the Roly connection.
Roly was telling everyone that he was good. Ernie said later that Sarpong had lost his passion for football.

Roly's fluctuating attitude wouldn't have helped either.

The exodus of football player Istra 1961 continues. The ninth player who will leave Drosin this summer is Goran Paracki, the most standard citizen of the green-yellow dressing room, who in the past season had 34 consecutive matches. The Paras will still do their Saturday night at Dinamo, and will continue their career in the Australian A-League, which will defend the colors of Wellington Phoenix, the only New Zealand club to appear in the top Australian Football League.
- Everything is already agreed and resolved, I will play on Saturday with Dinamo, and on Sunday I will travel, the plane will depart at 18 o'clock. I will go to the road, and then, when I reach for a little while and settle down, my wife will join me - Goran Paracki confirmed to us that after the Maksimir look to the south hemisphere. - I'm going to see the world a bit. This is the life of a footballer, there is not too much choice, it has given me a chance and I decided to use it. I was questioning a bit, primarily with Vanje Iveš who played for Sydney United at the time and he told me all about Australia, that he had the opportunity to stay longer without ever coming back to Europe and that helped me to make a decision about departure. Couple of youtube 'highlights' clips of him. Left foot appears only to be good for standing on
Two years younger than ACFC's Mario Bilen, also a DM, also played for Slaven Belupo (2010-2012) and Croatia Under 19 (11 matches). His right foot only for standing on. ["A donkey" - el grap]

- The Wellington Phoenix have signed Croatian midfielder Goran Paracki, local media reports suggest.
Goran Paracki, 30, was quoted on the Glas Istra news website as saying he would be leaving his current club, Croatian first-division side NK Istra 1961, for the Phoenix after playing a match on Saturday. -
"Everything is already agreed and resolved, I'll play in the Saturday match with Dinamo [Zagreb] and Sunday travelling [to Wellington]," the translated story said.
He said he had spoken with current team-mate Vanja Ives - who played for Sydney United in 2002-03 - about making the move to the southern hemisphere.
"He told me all the best of Australia, that [had] he had the opportunity to stay longer that [he] would never come back to Europe and it helped to make a decision about [the] departure."
A Phoenix spokesman said he could neither confirm nor deny the news.
Relying on an opinion of a guy that played for Sydney United fifteen years ago for his move to Wellington marks him as precisely the kind of a defensive midfielder we have been missing. I expect him to be uncompromising, tough, and earn a head bandage every few games.
Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days
Our squad has seemed pretty lightweight so it's good to see it Balkan up

Don't think this has been mentioned but Burns is staying in Japan. https://www.fourfourtwo.com.au/news/a-league-targe...
Gutted.
Sounds like a Vinnie Lia replacement rather than a Roly or A-Rod one

His stats are not that great, he's 30 which gives him 3 or 4 years here. I was very sceptical earlier when I read this, but then, if he just does all the donkey work in the engine room, then he might turn out good for us.
Just hope he knows that Aussie (& Kiwi) referees suck and love to hand out the cards.
Be warned Goran, be warned!!
The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
Granted, Istra aren't the greatest side - finished bottom half of the Croatian top league every season since promotion in 08/09, finishing second bottom quite a few times too (surviving thanks to one-team relegation), 6th out of 10 this season (comparative to us) . But he was a regular for Slaven Belupo, a better team, between 2014 and 16, and let's not forget the Croatian league ain't half bad! A level above the A-League I'd say, much more ferocity in defence. Solid signing!

I thought he looked quite comfortable on both feet, watched about half of each video - so unless the 2nd halves are completely different.
Also looked a little more like a box to box player - and looked ok playing the ball although hard to judge as opposition are not overly flash.
"Comfortable on the ball and with an excellent range of long passing, he is ideal in a system that favours deep defence and quick, direct attacks – very much the Dutch style that Kalezic himself favours."
This line from the OFC site looks hopeful
COYN ![]()
This is the type of player needed by us in the A League, not overlty flashy but tough, combative and solid.
And the first shot shown in those highlight shows him shooting like Vinnie Lia too
He seemed okay with the ball at his feet. And didn't keep it for too long, so seems to be a versatile player.
seems to be further forward in that second video.
Maybe DM in the first video and a box to box role in the second. How old are these videos is the other question.

I pleasingly noticed how when he won the ball he often looked for an attacking pass so that they could counter immediately. This could be a good sign of his vision, but I suppose if your most common reaction is to pass sideways or backwards it probably won't be seen on your highlights video. The videos at least showed he had the capability of playing penetrative passes.
This could go either way - 30 is a good age for a DM, but he's never played outside Croatia before so might struggle to adjust to the cultural change. Looks ok in those videos but hardly enough context to judge. But Kalezic has made canny calls on Vidosic and Galloway and our new GK coach whose name I forget, so will give him the benefit of the doubt

He played in Hungary.

90 minutes this morning for Paracki in a 2-0 loss away to Croatian powerhouse Dinamo Zagreb.
Can we assume he's on his way to Wellington now, with an official announcement from the club, say Tuesday/Wednesday?

So far I have been impressed with our signings - so long as he doesn't start spouting its our strongest squad ever I'll be ok.
