I would dearly love to have the option of Setanta here.  Probably willing to pay at least $10 a month for it, if not more.

Buying the rights for live football from each country is obviously going to cost a lost more than $10 a month for the 200 people that will subscribe to it.

It seems to me that live international NZ games, or even A league games featuring the Phoenix, attract about 150 viewers on sky - way less than repeats of netball games or shows where people discuss US college basketball. With this in mind, why is everyone bitching that football does not get enough coverage?

I'm not bitching that it doesn't get enough coverage at all. In fact, I love that Sky have increased the number of live A-League games by showing them on the highlights channel now.
I do, however, think that Sky *could* show a lot more football than they currently are, as the only football we get from them is the A-League, the Premier League, and the Champions League. It would just be nice to be able to watch a wider selection of football in decent quality rather than having to watch on dodgy internet streams.

But surely you understand that the market is tiny so it is not in their interest. Really tiny, and this is backed up by viewing figures.

It is like someone who likes watching horses sleeping complaining that there isn't a channel dedicated to showing live sleeping horses, which could run for 24 hours a day as there is horses sleeping all over the world

Will be interesting to see what else (apart from AFL) Sommet Sports will be showing when they launch on Freeview (supposed to be sometime this month).  The football picture on their website looks like an Inter change kit, so hopefully that's a sign we'll see some Serie A.

What's the selection of rugby exactly ? Not too much.
Sky shows MLS, FA cup plus what you listed.
They actually show a lot of football when you think about it...

The Aussies get on ok with it. Are you saying they've only got 1000 subscribers (with their 5x the population)?

Not sure why Setanta-i doesn't provide better coverage either. I'd even subscribe online if I could. It is just annoying that in this day and age, people who want to cannot even watch SPL (among others) on a half decent stream at a half decent price (Hibs website charges around $20 per game, which for the quality, football wise and stream wise, just isn't worth it!).

This principle surely applies to a lot of current SKY channels though. Many of them after midnight must have very few viewers except for insomniacs and shift workers. There are some viewers out there that although not Phoenix fans, they just like to watch "live" sport.
Perhaps it's time that SKY coughed up their viewing stats on all their channels for the last 12 months. Then we could all pick holes in them to support ourcomplaints and the request for a dedicated football channel. At $26.50 per month as it currently costs me, I'd rather give up the sports channels and subscribe soley to Setanta. (My bad spelling?)
As per my previous post, I really wish SKY would let me determine which channels I receive and pay for and which ones I don't. If only Telstra Clear had their own choice of channels and not just use the SKY feeds.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Funny because Ive watched LA and NY this year. I can agree and disagree though. If Sky started showing ESPN 2 we would be seeing a lot more football. ESPN rejigged their coverage and moved most football to ESPN 2. All we get now is back to back to back to back to back to back live NCAA Basketball. Not even exaggerating, had 6 live games in a row the other week i checked

Really? Sky's email reminder system must be completely broken then because I told it to tell me when there are MLS games on, and it hasn't sent me any emails. Gutted.

Correct, but the decision to show ESPN2 is theirs to make. And for whatever reason theyre not buying it for us. Most other countries show it

They stream ESPN3 online for SKY TV customers, not sure what they tend to show on it tho.

It seems to be mostly American College sports, have checked it a few times, but have also been on there when Sportscenter has said "Next on ESPN3...blah blah"

I don't think so, I think we would have the same situation we have had during the last month, where during the weekend nights, one channel is for Union, one channel for League, one is for Golf/F1 etc, and the last one is for the A-League. The only difference would be that the A-League would now be in HD, rather than the SD of before.

The recording for me works well for middle of the night sport (Prem league, F1 etc), that I am not committed enough to get up in middle of my sleep to watch, I can record it and watch it when I do get up. (Admittedly I got MySky for free as part of my deal).

Can't think of any time there has been a replay starting at the exact time I want to watch something I've previously recorded.
