This makes me think it's unlikely (from the stuff article on the awards):

Smeltz also said he was happy to be joining Gold Coast next season.

The Gold Coast is where Smeltz grew up and started his senior football career as a teenager.

"I'm 100 per cent pleased with the decision I've made, I'm confident we can have a great season in our first year," he said.

But then again Smeltzy said he hadn't signed with Gold Coast when everyone pretty much knew he had.

How's my driving? - Whine here

When can he still make the move? Whens the deadline for the transaction to be completed?

But then won't he be under contract with GCU, and they probably won't sell him.

New Zealand football player Shane Smeltz joined Turkish club Hacettepe in the Turkey's premier league, club officials said Monday.

The 28-year striker signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Hacettepe in The Turkish Super League.

Smeltz finished second in the Wellington Phoenix football club in the Golden Boot race with nine goals from 19 appearances in the A-League, the Australian football league.

In the 2008-09 season, Smeltz has scored, a record equaling, 12 goals for the A-League this season and resulting in the Golden Boot 2008/2009.

Will be very interesting to see how this pans out. If it is true then its great kudos for the Phoenix.....having a player off to a good top level European club plus he wouldn't be scoring against us for the GC.

Tell you what though if it comes off GC will be spewing!!!!!!!!!!!!

9 goals in 18 game? That's worse than the nix.

I suppose Tony P wont be commenting on this situation until things are fully sorted out.

Meh. It says the club used to be called Genclerbirligi OFTAS, isnt that the club that Mile Jedinak went to?

This could potentially get very ugly and with us (The Phoenix) wearing a bit of egg here

Example: How would we react if Adelaide sold Diego overseas from under us?

I could just see GCU and any other Aussie bandwagoner getting stuck into us for a stunt like this if it comes off and then them getting any other prat onside to get us out of the league and stop our license renewal (of course exageration to the extreme but taking this as far as I could possibly see)

Hope its true to stick it up Clive Palmer but tread carefully Tony P.

Nope. Jedinak went to Genlerbirli?i.

Hacettepe is a different club, but owned by Genlerbirli?i. The name changed due to them both being in the same league.

No. Jedinak is at Genclerbirligi SK. This club was bought by Genclerbirligi SK some years ago, and is effectively the Genclerbirligi SK reserves.

Wasn't the rumour that Smeltz never signed a 'contract' with GCU only a letter of understanding, thats how this will happen I imagine

er yes, but what are the legal implications of a letter of intent? binding or toilet paper?

Would depend on what went with the letter of intent I imagine, Consideration would be the sticking point me feels (well so David McLaughlin told me)

Thanks for clearing that up. Maybe, if he performs, he will get  "transferred" into the actual Genclerbirligi SK?

I wonder if this is true or just rumours.

If its true good on him, honestly thats a good career move and good for us (All Whites) for him to be playing in a better league

One would suggest that if it was not true, Tony P would appear at some point (when he does log in) and squash the rumours...

That's a very good point - the legal status of the two clubs seems very muddled, hence why I said Hacettepe were 'effectively' the reserve team rather than the 'actual' one. It'd be interesting to know how the transfers between them work, or if they're even necessary?

Nothing to do with Tony P really....

GCU have refuted this on RS news at midday. Bleiberg quoted.

Wrong Mile. Mile Sterjovski was there in 2007.

But if he hasn't signed an actual contract with GCU then i'm not sure how much it has to do with them either. Very muddled legal position. Not sure how keen I would be to mess around with Clive Palmer, presumably he has the resources to tie Smeltzy up in ther courts for quite some time
