Smeltz saga - now with added hypocrisy.

Why does it have nothing to do with Tony P?

He is a contracted Phoenix player until March 31st. He is ours until he goes to GCU when that contract starts so I would suggest that yes, Tony P has everything to do with it. Put it this way, GCU aren't going to say 'Here ya go Turkey, take the players voted best player and Golden Boot winner' now are they??

If Smeltz only has a letter of intent with GCU and no contract, well.......

I would add that I wouldn't believe everything that comes out of Bleibergs mouth either. Miron the Mouth, remember? I'm waiting for Tony P to deny this until I let it rest. Doesn't have to confirm it, but can deny it...

Listening to what Bleiberg says it effectively sounds like Palmer tried to guilt him last night talking about the community and the sponsors and the club. No real talk of legal obligations.
If GCU only got him with a letter of intent and then went and trumpeted the club based on that then thats there own stupidity

This is the interesting part
"The transfer, believed to be worth $400,000 will see the bulk of the fee go to A-League newcomers Gold Coast United, who signed Smeltz as one of the key recruits for their debut season"

Me thinks the left and right foot of GCU dont know what each other is doing

I thought the reason for leaving Wellington was to go back home for lifestyle, good for kids etc. Now he's off to Ankara. I don't get it.

If he really has a shot at playing in Turkey, then, at least from a footballing perspective, it's a no brainer.  I imagine the lifestyle won't be too bad either for a few years.  I guess I have some doubts about whether he's up to it, particularly starting off in Europe at a fairly 'old' age for a footballer.  But obviously the Turkish club must have seen enough, and if it does go belly up, Smeltz knows he will be in high demand in the A-League.  He should take the challenge, as the risk is pretty low for him - at worst he ends up back in the A-League.

Then a bonus - good result all round.  And the transfer money should help if we're looking for a marquee player.

That's good news - nice for Terry to get transfer $s coming in - a few more $s for a marquee striker

So much for the wife likes the beaches and the lifestyle of being back in Aus etc, clearly the money and being in Europe counts more.

Don't disagree with you. Maybe if it doesn't work out he will be back at the Phoenix. I imagine GCU will be rather annoyed with him.

Miron won't care, he'll have another 18 strikers lined up anyway!

What an absolute mess, this is going to get very interesting...
Shane or his agent are going to have to come out and clear the air with the truth at some stage.
News tonight perhaps.

I read on one of the Aus forums that the official word from the Phoenix is that he's not our player, talk to the Gold Coast.

I doubt the Phoenix have any comment to make other than that they have an offer for a player and have accepted it (as would any club).

Grrr. I think Phoenix club management should clear this up sooner rather than later IMO

I think it's a certain S. Smeltz who should be doing the clearing up.

Strange events. Can he even go? The transfer window is closed, is it not?

On one hand i'd rather him go there than the GC but the Turkish club are sure to be relegated. Does he really want to be in the 2nd Turkish division?

If he signed on Monday (as the Turkish reports say) and the bid was accepted by the Phoenix I guess it occured in the transfer window so possibly yes ?

The speedbump is the Gold Coast agreement in whatever form it took.
