The Wellingtonians amongst you won't like this but I think with the current 10 team 3 round structure 1 team in NZ format, of the 13 or 14 home games a season, only 9 games (one against each team) should be played in Wellington. The 4 or 5 instances where we have a second home game against a team should be taken out around the country.

Reasoning being to maximise revenue by making the product scarcer., after all who wants to see CCM, or NEW twice? If you want to see WSW or MV you'll only have one chance not two. Sure you lose a little in home ground advantage but with the exception of Auckland, it makes the road trip more demanding on the opposition with the extra flight involved.

With the Wellington home games, split them evenly being family friendly kick offs and corporate friendly kick offs.

To get more club and club player involvement with games, have someone in head office negotiate with the bus companies, and put package together where for each club there is a bus with 50 game tickets leaving from the club carpark. This can work for the senior teams having a night out, or Mum&Dad taking the under 12s, or the 13-18s being independent.

The draw doesn't work that way though, we're not going to be able to get favorable timing in all the stadiums and cities and play every team once in Wellington.

We're also playing four games outside of Wellington this season and we just got 5k people to the first one so that strategy isn't working so far.

Another point is the team is owned by Wellingtonians for Wellington, the traveling circus is a neccersary evil but the ultimate goal is to grow crowds and make it sustainable within this city, if the goal is to change then we'd first need to find new owners.

I think the team should experiment playing a game in one of the regional cities (like Tauranga, Rotorua, Nelson, etc) during the last week of December or first couple of weeks of January and get the holiday crowd, Wellington is pretty empty at that time of year anyway and not only would you get a lot of people who don't have much to do/families who need to entertain the kids/people in party mode, you also reach a diverse range of people who have congregated from around the country rather than just from the area you're in.

I've read that a lot in this forum? how true is it really? We only need about 10,000 of the buggers anyway and supplement them with another couple of thousand from the regions. I also question the value of taking the team to holiday destinations - people don't go to holiday destinations to see a game of football, they'd rather stay on the beach or around the barbie surely?

Canterbury United took a National league game against Team Wellington to Nelson in January a few years ago and got a (paying) crowd of 2500.

When your on holiday at some place for a few weeks, sometimes something like a football game is a good distraction

People are on holiday to enjoy themselves, and the Phoenix are (supposed to be) entertainment.

There's also less distractions when you're on holiday and reasons not to go, the regional cities are small and accessible and something like the Phoenix coming to town would be a big event, the bars would probably run free buses - in fact the council and local businesses always get right behind this sort of thing.

You also have the families who are desperate to find things for the kids to do, because after a couple of weeks they've exhausted most options.

There's something that jars watching football/ sport on tv  played at WIN stadium in Wollongong with the ocean in the background.

NZ Cricket basically scrapped the Basin boxing day test matches so they could play one dayers at places like Queenstown which were always well supported.

Everyone knows Wellington clears out after boxing day, and even more after new years, so of course there will be no games in Wellington between now and when the schools go back in Feb, cos that would be silly.

Not trolling

Didn't hear what the attendance was on the TV.

Looks like the Travelling Circus (TM?) is coming to an end at the end of this season two weeks in a row with crowd numbers under 6k, if the caketin wasn't going under renovations, I'm rather confident the Wellington locals could have done better than that. Perhaps poor advertising on the behalf of both Hamilton and Auckland can be partly to blame. I imagine next season we'll be back to the trusted formula of one game in Auckland, one in a smaller city in NZ, and the rest of the home games played in Wellington.

There can be no excuss. Brilliantly fine Saturday afternoon.I did notsee any advertising anyhere tbough. It is a crap crowd turn out and I hopethis puts to bed the myths by the club that these games are a viable and money making opportunity not to be missed. Take out the numbers that travel up from Wellington. Will the club acknowledge now that these are i deed a waste of time? No way Jose.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Because they are not a waste of time, and aren't just done to attract big crowds, as plenty of others have pointed out.

You know we belong together...

Phoenix still would have had more profit (ie not $0) from that game than one at Westpac.

They have tried all of these marketing ploys haven't they? and they haven't worked. The one they haven't employed yet is the 'winning team' concept. Its all very well to bang on about running the club in a fiscally prudent way etc but the bottom line is they are struggling to make money and attract crowds and its the old adage of "if nothing changes, nothing changes". I grateful that Welnix saved the club from destruction but get sick of them bitching and moaning about crowds when they haven't tried the obvious and spent some serious money on quality.

If they want to run the club in the current manner, just do it and stop haranguing the core fan base about not turning up and prostituting the club around the country to make a quid. If you want to be serious about owning a club then you've actually got to spend money on things that will make people turn up to watch, buy your merchandise etc. If you don't want to do that, fudge off, sell the club and let someone else have a crack.

2014-15 when it looked like a very real possibility that we'd win it our average was 8.5k, the year before that when we finished 9th it was 8.2k, last year it was 8k.

I agree that winning will increase crowds, but it needs to be a team that's competitive over multiple seasons and that can only happen through sustainable development. You say if nothing happens, nothing happens, but we haven't yet seen the results of our investments in the academy system, it's only three years old.

To be fair, in 2014/2015 the cricket world cup really ate into the crowds. Also, we stumbled at a really bad time in the season. If we'd kept winning into 2015/16 I would have expected the crowds to be up at least 1 to 1.5k on average.

The Phoenix lose money on every game at Westpac.

Costs for games outside Wellington are underwritten by third parties,  so the Nix are actually able to make money on them.

A few seasons back, in a year when there were just 2 games outside Welly in Auckland and Christchurch, the Phoenix made more money in those two games than in the other 11 games of the season.

Thanks for that.

I would be surprised if Auckland was subsidising costs to bring games there. We've been pretty clear we want a presence in that region.

If it was Huawei, you'd think they wouldn't be pleased with the poor turnout last night.

The turnout was clearly in the 8-10k range. The 5702 figure is ludicrous. The ticketing system must have stuffed up.

Not sure why you think it's so ludicrous. Watching on TV I guessed 6.5k. The top tier of the stand wasn't particularly full and the rest of the stadium was completely empty. If that was 8-10k then the Warriors are getting 20k and Mt Smart holds 50k...

Must have looked different at the ground. It looked significantly smaller than the average Warriors crowd, and they're what, 12k or so?

I thought it was about 6k-7k so to hear 5700 is probably in the region. If you are looking for an autopsy to say 'you are right' you won't find it here. I'm sure you'll tell me it's poor marketing and I'm going to tell you (as others have more than a few times) that NZ sports fans are band wagoners. Win, and you have fans. Lose and you are dog food. At the moment, the Phoenix are not a winning team/brand and when you look across their 10 years, the facts tell you we have finished at the ass end of the table more often than not. People do not identify the Phoenix with winning but when they do get a good season, as has been shown, they get crowds. Personally I am disappointed with the number considering the catchment size (your argument) and 10k should have been easily achievable. Why did they not get it - poor marketing? It's more likely cause in the minds of casual fans, the Phoenix are tagged as losers. The words my wife's friend said when we said we were going was 'Phoenix? Don't they suck eggs?' What worries me a bit is this has for me a slight feel of the Kingz/Knights in that as the team keeps continuing to not get results, fans keep dwindling until what do you have left?

Possibly saying "they didn't make as much of a loss" would be more accurate, as I doubt that any increase in their bottom line has occured due to the last two games. Even if the local councils underwrite the games, there will still be significant costs involved.

The last bit of your post is what worries me. We have these metrics-based targets to meet to keep our licence and you can bet that crowds of under 6k in our travelling circus games are not helping us achieve them. Now there's all these other potential franchises waiting in the wings too.

I get the argument about the underwritten games but how much longer will 3rd parties want to pay for us if this is the result? And yeah, it might make money to play in other centres but it does nothing to encourage people to come back week in week out, because there isn't a game for another year. And you lose any momentum in crowds in Wellington. By making the club less "Wellington" too you lose the tribalism/localism factor and become even more dependent on results to drive crowds.

For me the next coach potentially has the future of the club in his hands. If we get this wrong and we have another couple of seasons of cellar dwelling we are done for. Long term you want enough die hard fans to sustain the club regardless of results but in the short and medium term we desperately need to shake the loser tag.
