Pre-season match in China again, with a corresponding match in Welly.

More importantly, the chance for an influx of International students money into the Nix's Academy set up.

This is a very cool initiative, gets us a bi-annual extra game to look forward to, someone different other than the usual a-league teams. Might also help with us potentially pushing for a spot in the ACL should we win the league.

Good to finally get confirmation of the “exciting initiative” Domey was talking about months ago on the pod.

Really rather ho hum why for me. Not as if its a well known club or has something to really to offer us. Think your kidding yourself if you think its going to have any affect at all of us playing in the ACL. Going to take a lot more than one club to get us entry.

He did say "might", not would. I have no idea how this initiative might be of financial benefit to the Nix but surely they wouldn't have wasted time pursuing it if there wasn't good potential. I will be very interested to know what the club's vision is long term with this one.

Might as in it we have a relationship with a team playing in the Chinese Super league, maybe (slim I know) there's a chance that they p;ut in a good word with their ACL overlords.
Gotta start somewhere, at least now we have a presence in Asia.

Someone above mentioned potential income from Chinese International Students going through the Academy? I think this relationship started during the WWC, when lots of different people visited the Nix setup out at NZCIS.

I do not think it is about the ACL at all.  I think it is about mutual club to club benefits and we do not know what it involves.
It could an investment in the club, in exchange for providing an outlet for promising Tianjin players to be showcased in the A-League or perhaps good Tianjin players coming on short loans to get experience abroad while their wages are subsidised by Tianjin.
Of course I have no idea what is really involved, but this is just an abstract example of what came to my mind as potential options. Others may have better ideas.

I highly doubt it, but she did take a contingent of peeps with her to China recently (twice) so maybe this was part of it?

Correct, this was part of it. It was mentioned in the media that Phoenix representatives had travelled to China alongside the mayor.

They should of only sent one or even zero and used the money to buy an extra yellow strip with OPPO on the front…..

Might’ve only been Domey to be fair. And mate I’ll take the international students’ money through the academy all day. Gotta diversify your business if crowd and tv revenue isn’t cutting it.

The Knights had Tianjin links too (Chelsea also), didn't help them much.  They also targeted Asian students.

Don't see any benefit to the Nix here unlike MC and Auckland Whatevers links.

Ehhhh, with all the Tories in this forum maybe we should make like the Auckland fans and have a Left-wing Nix Ultras group :D

The Knights didn't have an Academy set up like the Nix does tho?

The Academy will need to find the right balance between international students and non Visa players that could actually play for the club eventually.

Maybe as with all your pot shots at Wayne Brown (probably all deserved for all I know or care), it's just a question of questioning her competence, rather than any question of political persuasion. Left or right shouldn't even come into it at the local body level, in my view. Just be competent.

totally this, I actually voted for her - I'm regretting it more and more. Not only because of the apparent issues with drinking but the blatent disrespect she has shown the rate payers. She came in on a ticket of openess and team building and seems to have failed on both more than once.

Links to Charlton too - They had their logo on the Knights' sleeve early on.

The first Wellington Phoenix F.C. Tianjin Tiger F.C. Sister City Shield match is scheduled to be played in Tianjin this September, with the second fixture in Wellington next year.
So I wonder when we head off to China?

This is supposed to happen this pre-season - What are the chances it actually will?

Considering I don't think Tianjin would be a big draw for a friendly, it would be a cool chance to play a men's match at Porirua Park (could put up some small scaffolding stands on the other side if it was necessary)

I see this got answered on the pod.

Not this pre-season maybe in a year or 2.

It seems the relationship is a bit up in the air these days due to turn over in the office at Tianjin
