PROAK mentions current club, so won't be anyone that has been released.

and current club may not even be premier league - its just that he's an ex premier league player

Yep, the CB/DM that CCM just signed is ex EPL for example.

Flanagan's signed with Gerrard at Rangers. Collins, Evra or Huth would be monster signings.

Id love Collins, would be an excellent guy to come in and be captain. He seems like an old fashioned footy player who would be fiercely competitive no matter the pay cheque. Won't happen, but the big ginge would be an enormous signing

Here's just one angle to form an educated guess...

Most average football league players sign deals on a season by season basis, so I'm thinking that if the player comes from the football league and is an ex-EPL player, they must be quite decent to have a deal that was longer than 12 months (and hence their being transfer listed)

So, we could possibly be looking at a relegated team who have over-committed and have to cull - like Barnsley, Burton, or Sunderland

Barnsley have Zeki Fryers, 25, but he is very much loved and would cost a few bob.

The only Burton option is Ben Turner, 29, played for Cardiff 2013-14 EPL

Sunderland have a whole pile of former EPL pros, many of whom have returned from being away on loan last season: Kone, Djilobodji, Oviedo, Matthews, Love. Most are young. Kone and Djilobodji are both 29, but are probably still good enough to play Ligue 1

From that list, my one guess is Ben Turner, which would be awesome. Chances? 1/1000000

Doesn't all this positive speculation blot out a lot of the angst we went through not that many weeks back? Well, there may be a tiny bit of angst still to come when the season actually starts, but this is a big improvement.

oh there's a little bit of angst starting to creep back in (and I'm guilty of that) due to the lack of signings, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was

No specification from this whisper as to whether the club are actually looking to sign him/her, or whether 'looking at' means they are just mulling around the office randomly having a bit of a gander.

There's 8 Premier Leagues in Australia, one for each state I think.

Given they formerly played there, I assume it's someone who was dropped from a team like Hobart Zebras or Riverina Rhinos a few years ago, and as part of overcoming his fast food & drinking addictions his counselor has recommended facing up to his fears and lacing up the old boots again, even though he his still haunted by his last ever game, a 10-0 drubbing in which the local rag described him as moving like a giraffe on wheel skates.

Would be good if it is actually the English Premier League being referred to though.

A good guess is for it to be an Australian, but I can't see any who it could be, so I'm guessing it's an import.

I can't imagine a defender relegated from English Premier League last year coming straight to us... I'd say it's more likely someone who played EPL a few years ago, got relegated/released, and career stalled at a lower grade subsequently but could still be a great pick up for us.

For example, Ryan Taylor was released from Newcastle in 2015, played a year in Championship, then a year in League One, then was in India this year, is only 33.

Yeah I'll admit that's pushing the boat out a bit there.

Nedum Onuoha (Recently left QPR after a long stint, isn't prem level anymore and could maybe be hesitant to go to another championship team)

Christopher Samba ( Tenuous link but played with Ryan Nelson at Blackburn. 34 now, made a truck load of cash in Russia before returning to England at Villa last year, so maybe money won't be a pressing issue for him)

Gareth McAuley ( I know he played prem last year but he's ancient so maybe he would be up for an easy gig before retirement)

It really could be anyone though.  Said player might have made 1 sub appearance as a teen at one of the clubs who got relegated 17 years ago.  It really is a pretty big net that comment has cast.

Most clubs in the football league and many non league, have a player who has made the odd appearance in the Premiership.

The press was pretty excited to hype up Roy O'Donovan as a 'former Premier League' player; 17 games over three seasons as a kid

Yeah my hopes aren’t sky high right now but I’m excited to see who this could be. I mean in recent years we’ve had two ex-Premier League strikers (Ifill and Greenie), a former Serie A regular (Rossi), the record goalscorer of all time in the Serbian SuperLiga (Kalu), and a 17 time international for a top European country (Stein). As others have said CCM have signed the African fella who’s been playing in the Thai league for the past 5 years and is a rather uninspired signing, yet counts as an ex-EPL player.

Edit: see below, thought he played for Man City when they were a PL team but nah!

Ifill had a handful of games in the EPL, but not Greenie who had a career as a (successful) 3rd or 4th tier striker. Not sure if he even played as high as the Championship. Good bloke, but not EPL standard.

Greenacre played for Stoke when they were in the Championship, also started out at Man City when they were at that level - although he spent most of his time on loan at lower division clubs
