On a slightly different but related tack, one guy I regret not seeing more of is Ricardo Clarke, who was here at the same time as Totori. Admittedly I didn't seem much of him, but remember seeing him in the friendly against YHM in Palmy, and thinking that he had exciting attacking potential, but he never really got any decent minutes in the league.

I took the young fella to watch them train one day and he was brilliant, super quick and just ran around skinning everyone

Didn't he get injured at some point? I recall he was ignored for a lot of his stay

Can't recall now if he was injured at any time during his stay here, but see that he only got 2 league appearances off the bench. Guess his his greatest legacy is the yellow and black version of the Panamanian flag that the Fever still has.

He was an injury replacement, maybe that is where the confusing is coming from. Rikkie said him coming over was it a favour for an agent and treated him as such.

Further to this from @VinceRugari, Mark Rudan confirmed to me tonight he’s in contact with Obafemi Martins, who he met in China last year.

“He’s a fantastic guy. He checks out really well. He wants to play. He knows the A-League. We’ll probably know more in the next 24 hours.” https://twitter.com/vincerugari/status/1040128806...

Piney played an interview with Rudan from last night's launch, on Radio Sport this morning. Rudan confirmed they'd been in talks with Essien but when that ended, they approached Martins. At this stage, they're waiting to hear back from him.

Also when asked about any other Aus/NZ signings, mentioned Tratt trialling (back from injury), and Andre de Jong rejoining squad on trip to WSW.

Excited to hear that’s De Jong is still a pos

What I remember of Totori was that he was quick but didn’t have a football brain.

I rememember him cutting it up in our national league, he was a very good player at that level.

He scored goals on goals everywhere except the Nix. Herbert's style didn't give him a chance to thrive. Don't think he would've set the A-League alight but he was a far better player than he showed. One of the better finishers of a football I've seen in person.

I want to know where the hell in Wellington would Oba stay? The guy is absolutely loaded. I know nothings a done deal yet and it's still in its early stages, but its surreal that I guy like that is even being approached by the nix

He will be free to chose where he wants to play without the worry about paying the bills then.

Relative anonymity, safety and a beautiful environment are not nothing.

Maybe he doesn't need bling

I meant doesn't need any more bling- he's emptied the store of that already!

No-one wants to come here - not even Kiwis. Perhaps especially not Kiwis. The club has a fatally damaged brand.

He has a kid, I would promote air quality good school system. I would not mention, virtually no highways and 100km/h speed limit.

yep not going to happen, based upon that bling and our lack of it,

It's a bit like chatting to a girl on the internet and then seeing the hot photo and realising you are never going to score her when you show her yours

It's devastating but

My balls my word

While it's smaller, would Wellington really be that much of a downgrade for him from Shanghai or Lagos?

Not quite as classy as Milan, and when you are that rich you have options rather than Lagos

Yeah, in general nz isn't the best place for the bling lifestyle, poorer countries are much better, we're far too egalitarian for conspicuous displays of wealth.

Yep, nothing compared to Shanghai or Moscow, or anywhere with the super rich and super poor.

I would rather compare our wages here to what he got in Sounders as that would be a closer match...Taylor obviously wont need the money, but came here - money isn't everything.

In 2013, Martins was the highest earning player at Seattle on a yearly salary of USD $1,600,000, That was 5 years ago though and while he was 28 and had all that lightning pace still. He won't come cheap but the fact that the club is talking to him and that Taylor had a yarn to him on the phone is promising. He's already got a sharkload of cash, maybe he just wants to play with an old mate in a reasonably pleasant league for the joy of football?

Imagine filling up that car! We'd send the bloke to poor house with our petrol prices alone!

On a more serious note;

The only way we could get someone like Martins is to sell him a challenge (couldn't be more understated if I tried). There is no way we are competing on monetary terms, but he's 33, and got a couple more years in him at least. Play on the fact he's a well known, experienced and quality player & would no doubt he would be a standout in the A-League, especially if he can get injuries out of the way.

Won't be easy, but man what a coup that would be for the Nix, and the shot in the arm we need as a club. At the end of the day, if it happen's then great, if not, then so be it. For me it's just heartening to see the Nix actively trying to recruit someone of this calibre.

Just my two cents.

Cassandra, Cassandra. Nothing a string of wins and some cracking goals wouldn't fix

Reminds me of the Kingz days when you had a couple of ex-German based pros on good coin while the rest had to earn a living working part time at the airport

Actually, come to think of it, this is on a whole new level to that

Did a bit of social media snooping, Obafemi's agent is a guy called Tekin Birinci who a little while ago was hanging out with Michael Essien. Essien has a different agent, but maybe there's a connection there?
