Given that this is our first time, will the Government still tip in the $20k Homestart so we can afford a real striker?

Looks as though TAHW has just been in the shooting of the promo material for the Handy Prem. Not sure whether or not that is a strong indication he ain't signing with the Nix?

Not unheard of. Sam Mason-Smith was in the HB promos last season despite heading to South Africa before the season started.

Bit of hyperbole, I’ll still rep and support my home club but we’d be lying if we said we aren’t all a little discontent

So according to Fox and the ffa there was definitely contact/talks between the club and essien + agent. Wonder why it fell through

Afaik Domey never said there wasn't any talks, just that we won't be signing him. Agent probably rang up, said 'He will play for you for $$$' and Domey politely declined.

It has been way too long since our last signing!

Maybe Krishna's citizenship was delayed and they decided to spend the only import slot left on a striker.

Now that the Euro windows have closed, maybe a few players on the outer at clubs will start looking for moves & the A-League is one of the few with an open window. Our window closes on the 15th October.

they also finished second though, we were 9th. A lot more urgent work to do for us than them

Now Ikonomidis to Glory. Unfortunately for us, some of the signings going on in the rest of the league are spectacular (on paper anyway). Hopefully we pull off something soon!

We are also looking very strong for the wooden spoon.  For the uninitiated, the wooden spoon is a much coveted trophy in the A-League which only one team (the best one, really) can aspire to, unlike the minor/final situation which essentially means clubs get two cracks at some silverware!

Sydney, Victory, City, Perth, Adelaide all have very strong teams. WSW and Brisbane looking decent too. Newcastles team on paper is still probably not the strongest, but we know that means nothing given what happened last year and they will still probably finish in the six. Us vs the mariners for the spoon again, it's got to be - weakest squads by a mile

I know transfermarkt isn't the most accurate place but the disparity in squad value between us and others in the league is a bit disheartening.

But they all want to win, and have the winning mentality, we will be fine...

Year after year, the other teams get stronger. Year after year, we seem two or three seasons off the pace or the required level of player signings to compete.

If Kopa is a plodding dud, Steven Taylor has a knack for slicing banana kicks into his own net, and Dylan Fox is the player of the year then we'll certainly be stirring a hot stew with our wooden ladle.

I'm currently seeing Sarpreet and Roy carrying the whole thing again.

I still think spending an import spot on a keeper has royally fudgeed us - though considering we still have one import spot open and seemingly can't convince anyone to come to us, perhaps it doesn't make a differnece

I can see Rudan signing Yoo for the import slot - but would hope it's not just out of previous form/accolades, and from many forum members accounts seeing him in the flesh he was particularly underwhelming.

Does the onus on Rudan now rest on what he's prepared to let go rather than sign for the sake of signing? If he's really serious about making this work we are simply going to need that starting line-up A-League Number 9, otherwise he'll be remembered as the guy who got the a-league coaching gig and shot in the dark with his signings.

I'm always prepared to eat my hat, and naturally converse in tall poppy land - but I'd love to be wrong!

We're probably the smallest squad, being a few players less than the other teams will contribute to having a cheaper squad at this stage of the preseason l.

Yeah if we look at the average value, we're still ahead of Brisbane, Adelaide and CCM (though I think it's outdated, I wouldn't put Nichols at 750k and Taylor at 500k for example)

The Bolt thing is a foil. It's like a table tennis champion trying to compete at a Grand Slam.

You're tripping if you think CCM have a worse squad than us - we don't have a Hiariej pulling strings, a Melling kicking the shark of people, arsehole versatility of Matt Simon's elbows off the bench. Pain and Hoole being annoying and fast down the wings. McGlinchey somehow returning to grand final Glinchey.

On paper we still look weaker IMO.

I don't think this is true. Hiariej was good last season but nothing incredible. Melling and Simon are not starting players of a top 6 team. Pain and Hoole are quick and good on the ball but more often than not can't deliver the final product. Burns and Krishna are both better than they are. Nichols on form is an absolute menace too. I think our squad is definitely still stronger, but that could change if they sign Oar and McCormack like the rumours suggest
