I would rather use a VISA spot on a 'keeper than have Velaphi, ok stop gap, but not a permanent solution at all. Actually, if we can't get anyone better than Velaphi who is a NZer/Aussie then we definitely should get a VISA 'keeper.

Gulley - but is there a better option... right now Rudan thinks there are, so I'll be interested in seeing who that might be.

He may get a look in again closer to the season start if Rudan is proven wrong.

Wonder if de Jong's absence from Masterton the other night suggests the same for him.

Hakoah was in a cup final the previous weekend, so I'm sure they would have wanted him back in time for that. Will be interesting to see if he turns back up at training.

Far more important that owners got the new coaching appointment right, than worrying too much about whether a young player like Rogerson needed to be contracted quickly or not. Maybe the negotiations with Rudan, just took time - plus from memory he also applied for role at Sydney.

Sure Nix could maybe have handled it better, but is Rogerson currently that great a loss? Isn’t it also potentially a bit of longer term win for NZ football. A young Kiwi gets signed in Europe, hopefully develops nicely in Germany - and could be a handy future AW.

Meanwhile is a decent chance that his squad spot at the Nix, is effectively offered to another young Kiwi. McGarry, Rogerson (and possibly Mata) have gone from Nix (sure not directly if Mata gets there) to Europe. Who knows if that would have happened if the Nix didn’t exist. So impofor NZ football, that the Phoenix survive on so many fronts.

both?

But assuming it was not possible to sign up Rudan earlier, then it was not possible to do both. Watch last 5 mins of this press conference below.

Rudan makes it abundantly clear that he is in no hurry to sign players. No hurry at all.

He seems a guy not to suffer fools easily, and if the Nix had signed up an off contract Rogerson, without him first having had a chance to witness him trialling - the owners may have been torn a new arsehole by the coach.

He is building his own team, and taking his time about it. So if Rogerson couldn't wait to trial in front of Rudan, that's his prerogative.

I have very bad memories around home brew vodka but I trust your recipe is a lot better than the dodgy students I got mine off!

Home brew in Poland used to be typically made from potatoes rather than grain.

Proper Polish vodka is rye based, either plain (Wyborowa, Belvedere, etc) or flavoured (a classic one is Zubrowka with bison grass). Zubrowka is readily available in New Zealand although not as much as it used to be say ten years ago.  Best drank chilled.

I can vaguely remember that bison grass on a christmas party.

I get slowly annoyed by Rudan, he is for my taste a bit to aggressive mentioning winning mentality, challenging the keeper otherwise to be fired etc. Every footballer want's to win and to be honest, it doesn't sound very clever, if he would pitch that to me, I would think yeah, what ever, I have my own motivation. This is maybe just Rudan media persona blurring out this buzzwords, but I'll have close eye on him...

Crazy, I was just saying in the contracted players thread I really like what I'm hearing from Rudan. It doesn't seem like buzz words to me and we have seen there has been a bit of a inhouse culture problem in the team last few years that it looks like he wants to fix.

Did Marco Rossi looked liked he wanted to win last season? Or various others we've had down the years? Rudan is doing just fine in my book. Wanting to win and having a winning mentality are two completely different things. Challenging his players and wanting them to have and show a winning mentality is no bad thing, as far as I'm concerned. We've been conditioned to accept mediocrity at this club for too long, on and off the park. Anything, or anyone, who challenges that mentality and tries to change it is alright with me.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

One of the arts as a coach is recognising that all the players are individuals, and that an aggressive expletive laden type approach may work to motivate some guys, but not all. That the quiet bored looking intellectual guy in the corner, responds better to a different style.

Still the Nix on field have been perceived as 'soft' in some quarters, so maybe Rudan is the man to shake that up.

At least he won't have the excuse that he inherited someone else's team. Lots of signings for him to make. Another now that Parkhouse is leaving.

I think I read contacting Rogerson rather than contracting.

Yeah sure I'm not saying contract the guy, but a certain level of contact with him would have meant this article wasn't published and potential players wouldn't think we didn't hold our players interest at heart. They invited the guy to HK - so it wasn't like they thought he was shark they were happy to offload.

Parkhouse is leaving? No unhappy about this by any means, but surprising since he has two years left on his contract.

May also mean that there is a suitable upgrade about to sign...

Yeah I thought that if there was a sure bet on one of the Handy players making it, it would be Gulley.

My guess is that Rudan's going to a top of the line right back and since he already has Fenton on board things became hard for Gulley

Are the people who think that Rudan is batting 100% so far not given pause by his not picking up Gulley, whom those in the know here seem to rate? I'm personally worried there's an anti-Kiwi bias being shown (possibly also with the keeper situation).

In his first interview he confirmed he has a Kiwi-first approach. He even went Kiwi first looking for keepers.

They apparently approached Gleeson and Marinovic before they signed the Polish guy. Batting 100% as far as I'm concerned. People looking for conspiracies which aren't there. The fact that there are already young Kiwis in the squad, others who were invited to trial but did not take up that offer for whatever reason and more signings still to come doesn't suggest any anti-Kiwi bias to me.

i suspect Rudan wouldn't be the coach for you then. He's clearly quite tough and has high expectations of his players and his staff. Competition is good, he wants winners on his team and he wants competition for places. Being comfortable is not an option for this team. I for one, like his approach and by the looks of things the players who dont like it are getting shown the door.

Not at all with the keeper situation. He said in the press conference that his first options was the kiwis which were Marinovic and Glesson but they decided not to come and he obivusoly felt they there were no other kiwis capable of performing to this standard. He is trialing several Kiwis and I am 100% sure that at least one or two of these will be singed up.

Darije was also tough and made a big deal of getting played who were proactive and had a winning mentality, so it's obviously in the execution.

More like batting 33.3 per cent, if the first two reject you.

Only problem here is us getting use to a coach who has a vision way above the mediocrity we have been used to in recent seasons.

Rudan will take us to a whole new level, and clearly has Board support to do build a squad to do this.  Have no doubt that more significant signings are on their way.

Since Elliot is only 19, we could put him on a scholarship contract (which is outside the cap) if we wanted him but expected him to play the WeeNix most of the season.

Two mildy optimistic signings. A keeper, a CB - both which we were in dire need of. What position does everyone think we NEED to strengthen?

Definitely think we need to strengthen mid-field imo - especially a decent CDM.

13 signings as of now

3 keepers

7 backs

1 mid

2 forwards

10 to pick in the base 23 squad.

How about

1 back - RB

5 mids - 2 CDMs, 1 CAM, 2 utility mids

4 forwards - 2 wingers, 2 strikers

Two or three imports left, and the biggest gaps imo are CDM and striker.
