The 12 Pubs of Lochhead was a roaring success, we review how the day went before moving onto the actual football. The Nix fell over more than the Fever after those 12 Pubs on the weekend, we chat about the loss to Sydney and how we can try to get at least a point out of the Mariners on New Year's Eve.

Can't wait for the next pod, I demand a minimum of at least 20 cathartic minutes of Burns hype and joyous proclamations of a saved season

For those of you who want more of Dave and myself (why would you though?), we've started an off-shoot podcast called The Worst Game Of All Time. We are going to be watching the same awful Phoenix loss (5-1 to Melbourne City last season) over and over, recording a pod after watching it each time.

It's our take on the Worst Idea of All Time where they watched Sex and the City 2 every week for 2 years. Their co-host Guy Montgomery challenged us to do the same with this match soon after it happened, so here we are.

Episode 1 out now: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/worstgame/episo...

It's pretty clear from this statement that Pat has never listened to TWIOAT but you really should. It's bloody excellent.

New pod. http://yellowfever.co.nz/podcasts

The Phoenix played a couple of games with mixed results, including just the second win of the season so far. Graham Arnold could be the next All Whites coach, and the Wel Clasico served up a goalfest of a first half. Oh, and we drink tequila.

Great pod chaps.

I hadn't thought about the negative about linos not calling offside and letting VAR do it being when a goal isn't scored so ta for that.

To me, the debate around this (both on the pod) misses the point. The AR can flag immediately, but if the ref thinks it's close he can wait before blowing the whistle & (now) use VAR. The pod touches on this. VAR couldn't come into play as the whistle went as soon as the flag went up. One of my favourite World Cup goals was scored like this (albeit pre-VAR)

Issues will arise from players stopping because they see the flag go up. Thomas didn't even try to save that 'goal', he just walked away from goal.

It's the players fault if they stop on a flag.

Thomas stopped on the whistle, which meant that play was actually stopped. The flag means nothing to the players in terms of stopping,  really.

As a referee, it would be non-sensical to wave a flag down on a situation like this one, because the AR has so much better of a view of the offside. Offsides are the hardest thing for a referee in the middle to be able to call (I would know, they are the bane of the existence of any local league ref in Cap 1 or below).

The other issue is that if wave this flag down, your AR is now miles out of position, and wouldn't be able to make a call on, for example, if Burns was offside from the pass from Krishna. You'd need to be pretty damn sure that the AR was wrong before waving them down, and you'd usually see it when the AR has flagged for something that can't be given offside like a backpass.

I've got no problem with Conger whistling when  the flag went up, it's just unfortunate for him that his AR was wrong in this case.

Your example here is what I mentioned in my last post, the referee waved the flag down because of the backpass, not because he believed the player was onside.

Fox being injured for three weeks changes everything about what you are going to hear soon.

Blame Patrick for saying he was fine.

Matija Ljujić got his Phoenix account underway with a stunning goal to salvage a point against the Wanderers, can the Nix pull off a similar result against Ernie's Jets? Back home, Eastern Suburbs have surged to the top of the Handy Prem, as TeeDubs and Auckland both dropped points.

In the Ridenton situation chat i'd add these guys to the finishers list: Smeltz, Brown, Greenie, Daniel, Felipe, Sánchez and maybe Smith

I'll give you Smeltz, but I don't really agree with any of the rest. They *could* finish it, but they wouldn't score 100% of one on one chances on my opinion.

Pretty shark chat about defending Ridenton. Couples of other things i disagreed with - but someone on the pod usually had the counter view so all good!

New pod out.

The Nix did it the hard way in Newcastle, but managed to claim all three points. Can they do they same against Adelaide this weekend? Elsewhere, the TeeDubs and WeeNix made it a trifecta for the Wellington teams over the weekend, however Auckland City are back on top of the Handy Prem.

Surprised there wasn't more hoopla over mambos performance, I thought that the was just good in that game, he was the difference in that game. For me, this was the sign ive seen that he can compete at this level so i was over the moon for him.

While I know we need to look at the bigger picture with him, i still think we need to give him (and any player) full credit when due.

He's was good, but it was one good game. He needs to back it up tonight.

It's a saying. Nobody is actually calling players cows.

I realise that Patrick, I just think it is talking about them like things that can be bought and sold, to be controlled and used. And I know that they can be, all of those things, but it just irks me.

Yeah I don't think there will be any hoopla over Italiano anytime soon.

It was a real shame we weren't able to put Fox in there with Dura. We would have been a lot more commanding from the back.

i think you've missed the point. and if you think a keeper conceding in a one on one situation makes him a poor keeper then you have some unworldy standards that no keeper ever will live up to.
