How can they become threats and prove themselves if you are advocating not playing them?
Rojas has had about 20 minutes of first team action, and I thought he looked decent and no better or worse than anyone else.

Way to much high ball, Paston had a good enough game saving goals , but I sick up to here of watching him punt balls higher than the stands, and watching our midgets make a vain attempt to get on the end of them.
Even goal kicks and and balls from Paston's hands were regularly pumped towards the stratosphere, only to be shortly headed back by a CCM defender. Our sole tactic seemed to be to pick up scraps from the hump downfield.
Surely we could use our full backs to carry the ball forward more, and try and get a ball into feet to chest more?
Rojas looked the player we need to help achieve this.
Im sorry but that was really poor attempt to play footbal, it was like a 4th division game from 1973. No, it was worse than that. Darlington v Peterborough
Yeah , great "battling" by everyone, but we really need to do better than that.

But you are saying they haven't proven themselves, and are therefore not our best players, whom you say should always be on the field. So surely this means you don't want them playing?

we seem to just boot it up to greenacre and expect him to do something with no suport he does a lot of yards but it seemed that neither could not score in a brothel and a nil all draw was deserved but i liked the look of rojas and costa if we had scored off that cross rojas put in he would of become a legend!!

We didn't have our best game today. I'd take that result. I though Lia had his best game for the phoenix, Paston kept us in the game, and Rojas looked lively when he came on.
Who are we playing next?
Can look lively but isn't a threat, same as Costa. Easy pickings and not going to create too much trouble for any defense.
All 3 off the bench didn't offer anything. Our (lack of) depth exposed. Shows that Daniel is important and we need another real impact player off the bench
Good to see you give a 17 year old enough time to prove himself
Irrelevant. We need to have the best players available on the park... at all times... we don't have the luxury/capability to develop players (yet - I hope)
Not really as Royal seems to have written him off already, thats what I was commenting upon, not his performance today, which FWIW I thought was no worse than Leo or Caceras played today.
Who's written them off? Get a reality check.
Then you should have phrased your original post better then!

I think that on todays performance that Rojas has pushed himself futher up te pecking order that Costa
incidentally what has happened to Diego and Chen as currently the are both taking up playng roster slots and not doing a lot of playing

Costa and Rojas looked likely, but please some-one stick them on the rack and pump them full of steroids. They looked like kids playing against men. And that's really only true in rojas' case.

Central Coast thought they had taken the lead 10 minutes in, when
Travis played a neat one-two with Matt Simon before coolly finishing
past Paston, only for the assistant referee to rule Simon had wandered
into an offside position.
"We couldn't see it because there is no replay, but we've just phoned back to Australia and they've told us it was offside," said McKinna.
"It was a great goal, it deserved to be a goal. From where we were sitting we thought Matty Simon had a man up his backside, but the report is that he was off. You are going to get breaks over the season, and they balance off.
McKinna=Numpty

90 minutes 90 emotions?
I felt only two - boredom and frustration - not sure which was worse ...
Nicky Travis for man of the match.
McGlinchey looks like he will be handy for the All Whites.
Oh, did the Phoenix play too?

I actually thought Rojas did look like a potential threat, moreso than Costa.
I would actually start him next week - why not? Give the Gold Coast defenders something to think about - an unknown quantity who is prepared to run at them. If it's not working out, he can be replaced, simple really.
As for the rest of today, I only seen the game from the 30th minute due to Metlink's amazing services, but it seemed like the same old story - some decent pressure first half, less so 2nd half.
You all know my views on things so I won't bother getting into another debate. There's no point because every game is now the exact same. Something needs to change though, we can't go on like this or we'll just draw every game between now and the end of the season!
Now see I watched the same game as you. To me, the defender that was marking Rojas looked like he had him covered. He was dribbling down the wing waiting for the defender to make and error so he could slip by him, but that never came. He didn't try to blow past him with a quick step or pace because I don't think he has it for this level. He can't run along side a player because he can't physically lean on the other player without getting pushed off the ball.
I like Rojas, I like the different dimension he brings to the game. I think he was a revelation last year at NZFC level. I think that this next step up is not quite there for him yet. He is light and slight and running at guys that have been doing it longer, a bit smarter, physically bigger and just as quick. He needs to understand that and adapt his new trick to work for him because this is not NZFC defenses he is running at.
I looked at Costa and I thought he ran hard, with nothing to show for it. I'd classify it as an industrious, but not threatening performance.
I want these kids to succeed, I really do. I just don't think they are up to it at the moment. They will probably develop into very good footballers because they are the younger side of 20 and still to develop. In the case of Costa, he has had 3 years in a pro environment so at some point soon, that potential has to materialise or its going to be a case of having him plateaued. The Phoenix are not in a position to play players for the sake of giving him a run. They need results. Granted they are not coming and I can see Ricki has tried something different. However I don't know if this is the right kind of different.
If we keep giving these kids a run, then they have to produce (as do others). If they can't then they can't play. I am happy with this team, just think that maybe they need to go to market for a better striker.
In fact maybe in all honesty after that game, I don't what I think about this team. Its like the Warriors 09 so far. Holding out hope for them to click but how long do you hold out for...

I remember Rojas getting by the defender at least once and getting a cross in?
He only had 20 minutes so it's a bit early to make a complete judgement. Like I say, I'd rather see him starting and see what he can do. If it doesn't work out, then hey, we tried and we know what we have.
I think that without Ifill in the team, we are completely and utterly mediocre to be honest but we're going to have to do without him sooner or later. We are no even winning with him in the squad, so I hate to see what will happen if he has to sit a few games out.

Formation can only solve so much. I thought for a lot of the game their midfield just looked better. Players with a nice touch who can win a lot of ball.

Greenacre squandered his chances in that game. Got the ball in the box a few times. Failed to shoot accurately or create anything. Got miffed at him in the first half when a ball was put down the line for him, where he was running. Didn't make it because he got outpaced / outmuscled to a ball he should have got. Once again, a very average performance.

Maybe completely irrelevant, but Hibs (my Scottish team) have been experimenting with this 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 type formation and struggling a bit with the fans making noises for it to be changed. On Saturday they actually did play 4-2-4, away from home, against a team who were unbeaten in the SPL at that point. Hibs won 3-1.
I guess all that ramble says is that if you never try something different, then you'll never know.

Have listened to the radio commentary, as got back from the in-laws too late to stream the game live. Based on Piney's commentary, it sounds as though the drawer was a truer reflection of the result than the previous three v Adelaide, Melbourne and the Fury.
