I was a Central United fan, I was
Kingz fan, I was a Knights fan (sort of) and now I am a Phoenix fan.
It's been a while since I was at Kiwitea Street (for an ACFC game it was). One thing that's different, in my opinion, is that sections of the ACFC crowd seem (to me) to regard each other as "them"... as opposed to "us". Even with the delineation between the Yellow fever section and the rest of the RoF crowd (standing vs. sitting) it all seems as if Nix fans regard it as one big "us".
I think factionalism within a supporter base (or call it cliques, or elitistism) is often (but not always) a negative influence that can alienate new fans and prevent them coming back.
Chants like "Where were you when we were sh*t?" for example...
I understand the herd mind, the "we're tight", "I belong", and the "I have mana because I was here through thick and thin" aspects of what is behind this. However the negative aspect of this sort of chant is dividing a united "us" of the team's supporters into a "them and us" where "we" are better than "them" because we have been here longer/are more loyal/know more/have an original shirt etc.
To me that's counter-productive. Surely all clubs, all teams, in all sports, want MORE people to become fans and come along and support the team?
I always felt like an outsider on the inside at Kiwitea Street. Initially because I wasn't of Euro/Balkans extraction. Later because I supported the Kingz prominently, and later still because I was living in Auckland and expressed support for the Nix. Even when I was going every week, and had good friends in the heart of the club I still felt like I was in a sub-group, and that the whole thing was not a collective "us". In the end it left me cold, and I stopped going.
On Fran Wilde Walk, before and after a Nix game, All I ever feel is a huge sense of "we - all together - are here to support the team" regardless of which bay we sit in. Once inside the ground there is a SMALL amount of them and us between the Yellow Fever zone and the Halfway bays, but it is minimal.
If we had a Yellow Fever AND a North End Ultras (or whatever) and there was some friendly good natured rivalry, and chants back and forth between the two groups, that COULD be a good thing. It can work, and has elsewhere... but for now having moved to Wellington 2 1/2 years ago the united sense of ALL of the Nix fans is quite noticeably. Starkly so.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.
