Back in time Newmarket Park could squeeze in about 10k but that was the limit
Maybe the Basin for a Chatham Cup final could hold more??

Yes, however the Basin not being in Auckland would make it unlikely to have Auckland's biggest crowd.

well pointed out, I was thinking more of the biggest domestic crowd in NZ
The only alternative to attracting a large domestic crowd other than Newmarket Park would be the Show Grounds at Epsom, but I think that was only used for internationals.
I have disguarded NHS and Mt Smart as we are more aware of their recent history.
There was Blandford Park which was well before my time but I`m sure that didn`t have a large capacity.
Quite simple   " LETS SMASH THE RECORD AT EDEN PARK"

Bill McKinley = Blandford Park

Can`t remember what the crowd was for the Mexico thrashing
But I would expect it to be not much more 5k

What? No, Blandford Park was in Grafton Gully, Bill McKinley is out at Panmure.

Vic Deverill's Rothmans Soccer League Ten Year History 1970-1979, shows the league's record attendance in that time was 10,000 for Mt Wellington 2 Eastern Suburbs 2, 1971 at Newmarket Park.

An Association with Soccer (Tony Hilton) says the 1949 Chatham Cup Final (Petone Settlers etc) had a crowd of 12,000 at Basin Reserve (but as noted by others, the Basin is in Wellington).

Kingz record crowd in Auckland before the 2003-04 season was 8738 v South Melbourne (25 April 2001) at Ericsson (NSL Official Season Guide 2003-04).
FFA suggests (http://stage.footballaustralia.com.au/scoreboard_HAL/0000260048/scoreboard.html) that the NZ Knights had an attendance of 9,827 at North Harbour Stadium v Sydney 2 September 2005. Wikipedia claims this as a Knights record and suggests Kingz didn't better their 2001 Auckland crowd.
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/New_Zealand_Knights_FC

There may be other club matches that I haven't checked, eg touring club sides etc.

Flicking through The Official History of the Auckland Football Association 1887-1987, I spot mentions of crowds of 26,000 at Carlaw Park for Auckland v Manchester United (1967); 10,000 at Newmarket Park for Auckland v Dundee (1972); a "capacity crowd" at Newmarket Park for Auckland v Tottenham Hotspur (1976). Attendances that may be similar or higher for other matches against touring clubs aren't mentioned.

Auckland selections though rather than club vs club matches ?

Man U at Carlaw Park   Techanically Auckland were a provincial not a club team
What a thrashing
If I remember rightly Brian Kidd made his first senoir appearance for Man Utd
and Mark Burgess (To become NZ Cricket Captain) scored Aucklands only goal

Yes they are Auckland rep teams v club sides.  You can make up your own minds whether "club football" includes matches where at least one team is a club side or whether it is only club v club.

Thanks for the research Wibbler.

So it looks like the record for a competitive league match in Auckland post-1970 is around 10,000, which should get smashed easily.

I guess the wildcard is whether there's anything bigger going way back to say, immediately post-WWII, when de-mobbed soldiers were so happy not be getting shot at by the Japanese anymore they would turn up en masse to watch Masters Div VIII.

10,000 already?

geez, I have not even got my tickets yet. I'm sure this also applies to the majority.

This has the potential to be bigger then Ben Hur!!

Can a mod change the title of the thread to reflect this game is in Auckland?

Auckland will rise once more

In case anyone else was a bit concerned about the fact Sky have the game on at 2.30pm, I rang Sky and they were adamant they had it correct. So I emailed the Phoenix and they said they are going to get it sorted.

We love you back office, we do!Elmo_Rises2011-11-14 15:35:58

Nice.

Leggy, if you're ever making an appearance in the Fever Zone, you are required to wear a Bob the Builder hard hat - the official headwear of current/former internationals in the Fever Zone.

As popularised by World Cup All White Andy Barron in about 2009.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
