Great result. I thought we were poor in the first half and it would've been a much different game if not for some wonder saves by Moss. I was disappointed that we sat back and invited them on considering they are the bottom team and we were at home.

After Leo made that run and wasn't given the blatent penalty the whole team seem to be galvanised and even Hearfield started playing well. Thought the 1st Smeltz goal was very important as if that didn't happen I think we would have sat back for the rest of the game and invited Newcastle on.

Still, wasn't a great performance. Can't really complain about a 3-0 victory though. My only concern is that will make Herbert adopt the same defensive tactics for the next few games - sitting back and relying on Moss to save 10000 chances will not work against Adelaide and Melbourne.

btw I suprisingly agree with Agent - Ferrante was invisible. I just don't see what his role in the team is. Brown is a great tackler, hurries players, rallies the rest of the team. McKain is a good passer of the ball usually and can transfer it from defence - attack quite well. Also holds it up. Ferrante? Not sure. Sure, he makes the odd tackle but most of the time it seems like he just runs and runs with no real result. He's a superb long passer of the ball but never uses it.

Daniel was good linking up with Bertos a few times and his delivery from corners was superb at times. Never *really* got into the game, though. I was impressed with his much improved defence and fitness. By the 70th minute last year Dan would've been buggered. This year at the 90th min he still looked reasonably fresh. Considering he hasn't started for quite a while (since September if I remember right) that is very impressive.

See if I look at that penalty through Zetters eyes, he has a good view on it, not like he was miles from it but I think why he decided not to give it was because Bertos was on the way down before the contact. He has kinda stopped and had just started going and then he got steam rolled.

That appears to be what has influenced the referee. In real time with no replay, he was the closest person to it. Still a penalty though.

So what do we talk about then?

How about that Andrew Dewhurst eh...

Considering he went off at me a few weeks ago and said I knew nothing etc... (though tbh I probably was too harsh on the players.)

Maybe I hate myself?

But Scottishbhoy
- didn't you see how we only won because Daniel started?
- we only won 3-0 because Costa got a run
- Durante has missed 3 of our best wins this season
- We should sack Ricki because of that first half.
- Thank god for Russell Nixon (who??)
- Our goal difference will let us down
- We need to find a striker to replace Smeltz
- Paston would never have made the saves that Moss made - let's buy Bozza

Right - that ought to get a few folks going. I'm going to have another beer and bask in the warm glow of a 3-0 win and 3 points in the bag.

Most disappointing thing was the crowd once again tbh. Hopefully we can get into the finals and get a few bandwagoners.

Russell Nixon = Phoenix Head Coach

your not telling me Sky News Australia has mis-reported?

I thought the commentator had a good game. Nothing to flashy, settled in well, dominated most of the conversation, no real mistakes of note.

Yeah but Paston wouldn't of been forced to make the saves because he can actually sort his defence out.

Haha that is a ridiculous assumption wellyphoenixfan. I'd say it's more due to Dodd looking a bit off the pace and Siggy taking a while to get into the game after being out for a couple of weeks.

I think Agent called it correctly Stack, Ferrante was missing out there....his role as a defensive mid (without McKain) is to go deep and demand the ball from the CBs and distribute... he simply didn't and doesn't do it yet has one of the better long passes in the HAL.... IMO there is no point having he and Brown on the park at the same time as while they appear to be different players they unfotunately end up doing the same job.. the problem is only exacerbated when McKain is also playing....

the result flattered the nix.. that first half was shocking with little endeavour from the nix... I think Dewhurst (sp) called it correctly just has Cockerill did last week in saying that we play far too deep and end up playing half the game camped outside our box...

we need to ditch the 4 3 3 and play a more comventional 4 4 2 IMO.. drop one of the 3 DM and introduce two wide players as the Nix look best when getting in behind and crossing ( a la Hearfield and Bertos today).. I think the only reason why Ricki isn't playing 4 4 2 at the moment is because there is noone to play the 2nd strikers role...

and finally, I think RH was right in recruiting Fred; he's exactly what we need next year..

Anyone know who did the raking pass that Smeltz converted superbly once he had shaken Milligan off.
A touch of class from our striker after a teasing ball from ???

A fantastic game! A fantastic result! A fantastic atmosphere! FANATASTIC PHOENIX! Come on boys, take down Sydney FC next weekend and lets charge for the Top 4!

P.S Landed the draw/phoenix - halftime/fulltime double. Double happy right now :)
P.S.S I did have a 3-1 pick the score too...if only Moss had missed one save in that first half! Ha ha! Hell No! :P I wouldn't wish Moss breakin a clean sheet over $ EVER!!! Well done Mossy!

OH WELLINGTON.... IS WONDERFUL!

Yeah, terrible timing, alright for me with school holidays but a lot of parents wouldn't have taken their kids to the game with that timing. Sunday at 4 or 3pm would be much much better.

Pretty bad defending from a Socceroo though. Also don't understand why Covic was way out there but Smeltz's finish was very pretty.

I agree with you for the most part but I don't view Ferrante as a central midfielder nor a defensive midfielder. He is more a right half ala the Beckham at Man U with the same long pass which is why I wanted to see him and Brown swapped.

Match report posted, click the lick above to check it out :). Good win for the 'Nix, good spirit to keep plugging away in the second half, and three goals will help the GD a bit. Still all on for the play offs though more convincing performances will be needed from here on in!

the thing about the game was seeing covic (sp) in the netting

Next week, McKain has to come back in the middle.
I'd then push Bertos over to wide right, push Daniel out wide left and probably leave out Hearfield.

Im not too bothered about whether Durante comes back as Dodd and Sigmund do a pretty good job. But on reflection, I think Id put Durante in for Dodd.

3 points! Get in the ring!
First half was a shambles, praise Allah for Glen Moss and his freakish saves.
Shane Smeltz's finishing is quite amazing and his penalties Cantona like (that means he doesn't miss you slow coaches)
Daniel? Hmmm. Great corners. Trying to rark the crowd up after  butchering a great chance in to the side netting is very embarrasing actions from a professional footballer.
Leo Bertos should just take  on eveyone and everything at anytime.
Sigmund  &  Muscat the finds of the season Never say die.
Ferrante.. lets hope we release this chap next year.
Lochead.. a true mystery of the A League clearly playing on Auto Pilot this year
Top 4 is in sight but a huge few weeks ahead.
Wellington. The city? The weather? The Phoenix? Love them all.

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Horrible first half.

But the old magic on the left in the 2nd half.

Why why why are we so shockingly bad in the first half?No midfield. No passing. Then 2nd half we killed them? Good effort from the YF I cannot talk. Mossy MOM for me for keeping us in  the game.

I actually thought that although it is great that Muscat is pushing forward he left his position on so many occasions and needed Siggy to save the day. He left us exposed alot and I rate him.

No, not the ref. The most important PLAYER is the one without the ball. Not sure what game you are watching but Ferrante has done a great job of killing opposition space, guiding opposition attackers away from dangerous positions and ferrying them to where our defenders are. He has also diligently tracked his runners and killed off 1-2 chances. He may not have done much on the ball but off it he has been superb. Turn the commentary off and watch whats going on where the ball isnt. He has been one of our best players.

I was at a different game - at the game I was at Ferrante was ordinary, almost every time he got possession he hit a panic or hopeful ball, in the first half Ferrante and Brown did not have a clue who was playing DM and it ended up niether of them were. RH called it right Ferrante off and Christie on.

Who is Michael Hussey?
