Actually I base it on watching him live at the stadium. I watch him off the ball as well as on the ball. He is a ghost in midfield, and always out of position.

He hangs about up front far too often. Many times I've seen us concede and he has been further up front than any of our strikers. (this is also true when we have possession too,so no saying "he's not a defensive mid)

If ricki HAS to pick him every week,I'd rather he just chucks him up front with greeny. Then maybe we'll have a midfield.

Does that help?

I have watched most of the Nix games on TV and the rest live, and I agree 100%.

I (kinda) get Ricki preferring Lia in midfield away from home, but preferring Downey on the bench? Ricki said he likes Downey further forward, the one time he had a real opportunity to do something in the Jets third he quickly found himself cornered by a couple of them and lost the ball.
Smith blatantly > Downey, the only logical answer I can see is with Ward and Pavlovic on the bench Ricki wants him as a wide option.

But don't you think our poor away form is at least partially due to rickis tendency to be over cautious at times when we play away?

Allegedly

I hope they resign Smith, he is like a Manny for the front 2/3rds. So versatile and pretty damn good.Worth a spot in my books, and would rather see him retained over a visa keeper :/

Completely agree with this.
Manny = versatile for back 2 thirds
Smith = versatile for front 2 thirds

So valuable, if even on bench.

The ridiculous decision to use a visa spot for a GK, when we already had Paston, is going to bit us in the arse - unless we can sign an Australasian striker. If we can't then Smith pays the price for that dumb decision.

That's assuming we even sign a striker in January - based on our track record over the last 3 years that's far from a given.

I don't think a striker is a particularly high priority. We only play one striker and have Ifill, Greenie and Pav. I think a wide midfielder is actually more important now depending on how Downey goes there. If Brockie really is on the outer with the jets he could cover both. But I don't actually think we need any particular position desperately. If some high quality player becomes available or someone who is cheap and a good fit in the team then sign them up regardless of where they play.

edit - in fact I would say the most important thing to get first is an assistant coach. I don't like the player coach arrangment and I think it is important to get an additional/alternative view before recruiting more players.

He's also not a bad defensive mid either.

Sack Warner. Sign Smith.

Disagree on the need to sign a striker - Ifill is susceptible to injury, Greeny has scored bugger all this season and Pav is all over the place like a mad woman's ......

We have very solid back four, adequate DM and decent AM - we could really push for a top 2 or 3 spot with a good striker / target to play up front and allow Ifill / Greeny to run of him.

I do agree on the need for a full time assistant coach - Greeny doing the job is a hang over from Terry's financial woes.

Quite frankly, I'm not convinced by the "Tim Brown doesn't do anything" mantra. Sometimes I think the people who say this base this on watching games on TV and counting the number of times commentators say players' names. I think someone was actually amazed to find out how many tackles Brown makes.

That was me. And I am still amazed. Where did that stat come from anyway? Google hasn't found it for me.

I am not a Tim Brown hater - he is clearly a really good bloke - but I do find it hard to believe that on current form he deserves a place in the match-day squad, let alone the starting eleven. It is mostly his positioning that seems shockingly poor to me at the moment. He is too often on the wrong side of the man he is supposed to be marking and is rarely in a good position to receive the ball when we have it. Next time you watch a match, keep an eye on Brown when we are in possession and check how often he makes himself available to receive a pass from the player on the ball.

I think we need a striker who can create something out of nothing. Ifill can do that, but greenacre cant.

If we can get someone up top who can receive the ball and turn, or beat a man, then we will be much more of a threat. Greeny just doesnt possess those skills, and although his ability to lay the ball off and hold up the play is good, its not exactly keeping opposition defenders up at night.

Smith > Downey.

Smith => midfield
Manny => right back    ok?

Downey has been cack. Fast, but shown nothing on the ball.

The whole point of our away form- the team that beat Newcastle was the one tried at the end against Melbourne. The team Ricki wants to revert to is similar to the one that shipped 3 in 20 mins against Melbourne.

Get as many ball players on the park at once, and if some of them can run, bring the ball down and pass it so much the better.

Brown and Ward have their moments of being useless, but have had some great and crucial moments too, providing and putting goals away.

Surely there is no argument that Downey has contributed anything to the season yet?

With 3 games in 9 days? is it best to hold some players at home in an away fixture to concetrate on 2 games with the 12 player(YF) available.

very disappointed that Alex Smith wasn't brought to Adelaide. He has been outstanding and - despite the fact that I like Lia - I think we have played great football when he has been at RB.

I think we can only afford one between Lia and Brown on the park. Smith as CM gives us a lot more going forward.

Not happy with Ricky's call.

This being said, I hope we still rip them a new a-hole

has been cack. We've signed him, and Ricki's hoping to get something out of him I guess. Maybe he'll show something, but has done nothing yet. Has been crap and got injured.

Smith>>>>>>>>Downey for us and in what he offers.

I will take it all back if Brown puts in a MOM performance, or atleast is one of our best.

Winning wont justify dropping Smith

why has smith been dropped? the lads been one of our best/most consistent players but he gets dropped before some players who have been playing **** (bertos mainly, brown and ward have the occasional good moment but not consistent)

Smith should be offered a 2 year deal. So far he's looked the best central midfielder we've had. composed and gets on with the job. Lia at RB has been a good move. Manny did well at LB. Manny & Smith in midfield could be interesting.

Thats because it's not about Alex Smith, It's about the stupidity of the decision to not play him in center midfield.

This must be about the contractual situation - that or Ricki is being too clever by half.

Or he doesn't think we can outfootball the bottom placed team in the league away from home - which might be true.  Either way I suspect we'll see an awful lot of awful football in this match

that may be true but smith is a good plkayer who has been getting game time and has proven himself to be a worthwhile addition to the team, Downey has yet to make that impression where and when it counts.

I've seen the pre-season, and think he's awful.

Good burst of speed, and that's about it.
