Why? We already have Daniel, Toto, Pavlovic, Hearfield and (cough) Diego not getting any game time

well maybe, depending on what you call his best football.

If he plays in the mid do the team play better football? Does brown score more goals? Do we keep more clean sheets?

And should we pigeonhole a player? unhappy with Disco relegated to the backs...he should be ahead of Pav on the forwards list imo. More pace upfront!

It would mean we could bring on someone nippy and quick for mac if thats not working. and even put cornejo on for greeny to completley change our attack.

Jamal Johnson could be a good pickup as he is quick. But he would have to play striker.
I do think we need another striker. We start with two up top yet have only three real strikers on the books. So a quick central striker would be nice

If Manny plays midfield then Troy plays right back and that weakens one part of the field for no reason.

exactly! except he tended to be more of a wide option. could do with a striker who would be effective on their own

This intrigues me, because if was brought in to play central attacking why did he come on at left mid ahead of Daniel who is a proven player in that position. Now, the obvious answer is to give him a chance or whatever because we were ahead comfortably. Okay, if that's the case, then take off Greenacre or MacAllister and play him in the middle. That sub did intrigue me a little.

I'm not saying he would be an automatic starter. Could well be an impact player. New signings don't have to displace a regular.

if i were Ricki (then the Nix and AWs would be in a spot of bother)

but, also, i would have given Toto a job out wide until i were convinced that he wasn't going to make errors in the middle that could prove more costly than if made out wide

edit - and maybe i wouldn't want a repeat of GCU where we lost our outlet up top (Big mac) and consequently got pegged back in our own half too muchtigers2010-08-25 06:26:22

Fourfourtwo ...

"Meanwhile at Smeltzs former club Wellington Phoenix, moves are afoot to retain marquee man Paul Ifill beyond his current deal.

Despite the former Millwall player having 20 months left on his contract, coach Ricki Herbert wants a longer term deal for his star man effectively making Ifill a Phoenix player for the remainder of his career.

Ifill, 31 next month, scored a brilliant goal in Sunday's 2-0 win against Central Coast Mariners in what was the 400th senior game of his career.

Last season, the Barbados international bagged 13 goals and is again proving to be an A-League star with two well-taken efforts this campaign.

Additionally, its believed Phoenix want stars Mark Paston, Ben Sigmund, Tim Brown, Troy Hearfield and Chris Greenacre re-signed within a month."Luis Garcia2010-08-25 09:16:32

im sure we can probably get them all on side to re-sign. greeny will be keen, dont know how many more years he'll have in him to be honest.

Troy may want to look elsewhere if hes not happy. Hopefully he is, but he is now backup right back and i dont think he saw himself in this position a few years ago. I don't mind if he is signed or not to be honest

So is Paul Ifill our marquee? If not, will this contract make him marquee? I'm all for signing Hearfield, be eligible for New Zealand very soon.. But the very interesting one is the signing of Paston.

im sure Ifill isnt our marquee. Everyone just assumes he is cause hes our best player. But last year when we were trying to re-sign him, the idea of marquee was floated around but they didnt need to use it on him in the end.

True hearfield will be eligble to NZ. That could be interesting.

Yeah i wonder when paston is looking to throw in the towel?

Would nice to see them all re-signed.

Greenie will be 33 by the end of the season but he doesn't rely on pace, so I think he's got 1-2 years left in him.

Hearfield will be eligible for NZ by 2014, but a) has this thought crossed his mind and b) does he want an opportunity for more game time (i.e. elsewhere)?

Siggy I don't mind keeping - I certainly don't want another A-League side pinching him. Lacks pace but not in much else at this level.

Pasty will be 34 by the end of the year - it really depends whether or not he wants to carry on. But then again, he's hitting a purple patch of form, so may want to continue.

And oh Ifill. He said himself he was poor on Sunday - this despite scoring an exquisite, game-clinching goal. Other offers may/will come but could he leave? No!! Keep this man.

Good sumation RP agree with it all, you forgot Tim Brown but we dont want to lose him either, others could be looking too. I think Ifill would be the clincher get him on board and the rest will follow.

I think Hearfield will stay. He's not good enough to go overseas and I really don't think anyone in the A-League could offer him more gametime than we have.

Sigmund, Brown and Greenacre I'd say will be re-signed easy.
Paston is interesting.

I'd be pretty happy if we could re-sign Big Mac, Daniel, Rojas and Lochhead too.

I wonder if the reason for Leo's form is his three season contract. He seems so unenthusiastic. Even when he scored he was hardly pumped, albeit a tap in. So much class as we've seen at times but there are motivational problems or something there.

it all sounds like great news. getting in nice and early gives you the edge against other clubs who may decide to pinch some of your players.

Who I'd definitely re-sign (or try to):

Ifill
Brown
Daniel
Troy
Siggy
Magic Marco
Greenie (1, 2 year max)

Not too sure about (yet):

Pasty (only sign him if he wants to continue)
Lochy
Big Mac, Toto, Pavlova, North (haven't seen enough of them yet)

Would Hearfield be on Sydney Rover's radar? I would be happy for him to stay, but would think he might move if he had a chance for a first team spot more often somewhere else.

Last season he was getting plenty of game time for us. If we had one striker up front I'd imagine he still would be. But the change of formation hasn't worked in his favour.
Permalink Permalink
over 15 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
He's like Manny though, can play in a variety of positions (apart from in the middle) so that definitely works in his favour (and gives him more reason to stay at the Nix).

At times leo seems completely flat, unenthusiastic and not overly keen to run at defenders, also seems a bit lacking in pace at times........

I reckon it's working against him at the moment. Manny has a preferred position, RB but can play right across the backline and into midfield. Hearfield I think doesn't really know his best position, striker, attacking mid, wings, or right back. Because of that, he can't really knuckle down on one position and have that as his specialty with the others as backup.
Permalink Permalink
over 15 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
Pretty sure his preferred position is as a winger, and at the moment he isn't doing enough to earn a spot there or anywhere else, although I'd like to see his pace in the side, perhaps his best opportunity would be to right back with Muscat taking Lochhead's spot.

Wow, that's some list of who's contracts expire this year ....my thoughts

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON 2010/11:
#1) Mark Paston (gk)
           - Possible retire but imagine Ricki will talk to him again.  May have trouble keeping Vukovic here so pretty big call what happens with the keepers.
#40) Danny Vukovic (gk)
          - as above
#3) Tony Lochhead
          - we've all been wanting another LB.  Musa?  Anycase, resign Lockie.
#5) Diego Walsh (Fgn)
         - kissed a toad.  Byebye.
#6) Tim Brown
         - surely re-signs, not resigns
#9) Chris Greenacre (Fgn)
         - suspect he'll be keen for another one or two years.  i'd have him
#11) Daniel Cortes
         - same as greeny, but he may look for game time elsewhere?
#13) Troy Hearfield
         - hmmmmm, marginal call, but offers the squad a lot of cover. May have trouble getting better game time elsewhere, so may stay.
#18) Ben Sigmund
         - North, Dura, Siggy, +Musa. Done.  The clubs mascot.  But maybe he'd look for more gametime elsewhere. wash my mouth out
#20) Reece Crowther (gk)
         - Third man if we keep Vuko and Pasty.
#21) Marco Rojas (u21)
         - born 5 November 1991, so still under 21 and stays, hopefully him and musa getting regular game time in a reserves team
#23) Dylan Macallister
         - looks like a cart horse to me but he's flicking them on and greeny's enjoying having him there.  Maybe re-sign.  May become a back-up to Pav, may not last for another contract if we can get even bettter.
#10) Oscar Roberto Cornejo (Fgn)
         - too early to say, but i like the look of toto and he may give us an option walsh never bothered to provide.
#14) Mirjan Pavlovic (u21)
         - see Macalister.
#15) Jade North (Aus Mqe)
         - hopefully he likes,he does the business, he stays.

Hmmm
Diego goes;
Macallister, Cornejo to prove themselves this year or we could look for better.  I hope we look for better than Macallister, but he's doing the business for us right now.
Siggy, Daniel, Hearfield might just possibly look for greener pastures and one or two might just be good enough to get it??
Vukovic likely to want to go back to Aus so with Pasty being an unknown quantity that'll be interesting.

That's a pretty big re-sign list, the way I see it (for what it's worth lol) a pretty stable squad if we do re-sign most, with just the question of whether Corne and Mac add enough or we look for more.  But also with Diego's current spot creating a possibility for us to add something new to the squad.

If we play the three at the back, Siggy will be playing every week pretty much, so will most likely be happy with gametime. He is good enough for A-League but don't think other clubs see him as good enough for an import spot, same with Daniel. Hearfield would get no more gametime elsewhere than he is here.

Otherwise, good analysis.

I suspect Daniel would definitly be keen to stick around untill hes been here 5 years for the sake of being eligible for the All Whites. I think that is till the end of next season (someone correct me if im wrong). Otherwise pretty much agree.
