Ah, I was just waiting for someone to come up with SACK TERRY. Thank you, my bingo card's full. As if Terry trying to sell the club now to the Mystery White Knight wouldn't be another huge distraction. Start that chant up again once the season's over, if you feel you have to.

Seriously, Ritgers clearly doesn't read Matt Nippert's work and doesn't realise that we're doooooooooooooomed, and I'm happy about that.

How many minutes did sanchez actually play? Why on earth doesn't Ricki give him a 90 instead of players he knows like brown? Because my god from what I have seen and the reports from this forum he is by far the attacking midfielder we need. Give him one last chance Ricki but at least make it 90!

Rigters seems like the goods, but he could be Pele and we'd still struggle as we don't have any creativity in the midfield.

We have predictable wingers and DMs. It must be very easy defending against us.

That's not to say we're doomed, because we've won games even though we've been outplayed - but it is frustrating. I don't know if Ricki tactics are based on our limitations, if the team doesn't follow the gameplan, or if his coaching is the limitation, but it's pretty obvious what our gameplan is and it does not keep the opposition guessing nearly enough.
I like tautologies because I like them.

Think a creative midfielder will help, must also think its a mentality change that is needed as well. Our CMs need to make backwards runs towards the defense when in possession, and take the ball from the defenders.

We do this at times, but generally we tap it back to the defenders and the hoof it or pass it out wide.
When what we need is our CMs getting the ball, turning on it, and looking for another forward pass, then if its not on you can always turn back and give it to the defense then.

Hope Rigters can be signed. Did he play central striker all last night? Or shifted out wide?? Think he sounds like he wont neccessarily hold the line up and stay high at the top of the team, which we kind of need.
I could see us playing a fluid front three with Ifill, Rigters and one other like Leo leading the line all switching sides and position constantly and creating mayhem. Who needs a striker haha. Just sign loads of midfielders who can attack.

I would've thought that Rigters would be the one that is locked in and Sanchez/Mehmet on the fence

Was thinking the same thing. A smallish, quick striker forces a slight change of tactics and therefore better looking football....ideally anyway. Ricki's trad 'target man' philosophy is not really to my liking.

On the other hand Mehmet has a proven track record and in time I'm sure would show good goalscoring form. At the end of the day I don't mind who's banging them in as long as we're somewhere near the top of the table.

I think ideally it would be Mehmet and Rigters but Ricki wants a Sanchez type player who can play in midfield where as Mehmet and Rigters are both limited to striking roles (unless Rigters can drift wide).

Or just to completely throw a curve ball scenario out there:

-Greenacre hangs up the boots to become RH's full time assistant
-Rigters, Mehmet & Sanchez all sign

I hate to say I told you...but I told you!!!

Rigters is the best thing to come out of Holland since tulips on toast!!!!

I'd never seen him play but I have been working in Holland for the last few months and my Dutch collegues said he was an exceptionally talented and would be great in the A-League. Its just a matter of him settling in and being hungry enough. Remember Serg van Dyk was Dutch Div 2 and has been great in the A-League...... this guy has played 90+ games in Dutch Div 1...and is only 27.....

as for those who wish we had a creative passing midfielder. I remember one guy who was great at the last World cup, was pants for us and now is getting great reviews playing in the MLS.....what was his name again????? Simon ???????

The comments about Rigter making great passes and nobody making runs is systamatic of our playing style. We are too static, too predictable and are easily countered. Sure we will fight and bustle our way into mid table but if we based a team  around a guy like Rigter....got some bloody ball players in midfield and played the ball along the ground more we might just have a chance of making a significant impact.

I was saying it too. Probably 80% of the people on here took one look at his goalscoring record and were saying how 'abysmal' he looks. Its early days but if Ritgers were to sign with us I reckon he would be one best if not the best player to ever sign with the Phoenix. The standard of the Dutch 1st division is significantly better than the a-league and Ritgers wouldn't have been picked up by an English premier league club for no reason. I personally would seriously consider giving him the marquee contract if he were to sign with us. He has great pace, strength and technical ability. But then again it is still early days and he still does have to prove himself.

On the other hand, I really dont know about this Sanchez guy. Just looking through his career record, he has been playing in very average Spanish teams. But then again I'd like to be proved wrong, hopefully he can make an impact.

And I know this has been brought up on many occations but why has Aaron Clapham never got a look at? Is he not good enough for the A-league? I would seriously question if he was not on par or better than the likes of Tim Brown and Vinny Lia. From what I've seen he has a good touch and would be able to collect the ball from defence and distrbute short and long passes through the midfield and attack. Dont we need a guy like this that can retain possesian instead of aimlessly playing the long ball to a lone striker? I also rate Mulligan and question Ricki Herbet's tactics. Mulligan was never given a look at the Phoenix.

"Because they're here and they're doing things well. [Rigters] is very strong, quick, good on the ball and he tucked the goal away well, it was a quality finish," Herbert said. "I think we're a good shot for the player and he's very keen to be part of what we're doing. So hopefully over the next few days, with a little bit more time on the pitch on Friday, we can secure that. Dani's clever and tricky and I think he's close."

 Re: Maceo Rigters.
New report from the Netherlands on his trials with Wellington and elsewhere.
Wouldn't hold your breath on him signing for Wellington. What I get from the translation: Seems he's still holding out for an improved offer from Aberdeen. To me  always appeared strange a player of his stature would be interested in the Nix. Doubt if they could afford him if Aberdeen couldn't meet his demands...
On the positive side, he's placing importance on a good situation for his young family, hence he quit a trial in Russia recently after one day- so NZ might appeal to him on that basis.

That rando translation also says he sat in the stands Saturday night during a race, when in fact he played on Saturday night in a game of football, so I'm placing limited reliance on it.

Hah, now that there's a doubt that he'll sign for us, I'm not sure where the people who were saying "don't sign that fat non-goal-scoring loser" are.

But seriously, Billy Mehmet will be cheered to hear the above, unless he's also waiting on an offer from Aberdeen.

Looks like it will be rigters and sanchez. Billy Mehmet is close to signing with English championship side and will return to the UK, if information is right on rumours forum. Barnsley and Doncaster !

Think he would have been a good signing.

Hmmmm!!!
This sounds interesting. I am not surprised Rigter and Mehmet are holding out for a European contract. Rigter is a class act and at his age must be hoping to still have a few years at a top level. He would have been impressed by the crowd and the stadium in Dunedin but he would be wondering should he commit to a team that gets dicked 1-5. I think we are in with a shot....things are fairly grim in Europe and there are lots of footballers looking for a contract still.

I'm sure Rickie would love him to sign but at this stage its rigters call. does the money stack up?, does he want to bring his family here? does he think the standard of the comp and the Nix are of a suitable level.

Sure hope we get someone signed because if Rigters and Mehmet bugger off then the cupboard is looking a little thin after that.

In an ideal world I would prefer to move Greenacre off the player roster into a coaching role, not to have used up a overseas spot with Warner and sign Mehmet, Rigter and Sanchez. Play 442 with Rigter in the pocket behind Mehmet.

The Wellington Phoenix are on the verge of signing two more players.

Dutch striker Maceo Rigters and Spanish midfielder Dani Sanchez are currently negotiating contracts for the upcoming A-League season.

Coach Ricki Herbert says they're keen to sign both players.

He says they'll continue the discussions this week and should have a couple of new faces at the club.

But another triallist, striker Billy Mehmet has left the club after failing to earn a contract.

I dont mind about his signing, but he isnt the wonder creative midfielder we need. From the limited amount I've seen of him, he looks just as creative as Diego or Mulligan could have been in that role.

On a positive note, its great to see these lads signed up, and with guys like Chettleburgh and Bran, I think we will have a relatively competitive side. With depth and competition for places all over the park

perhaps also Mehmet isn't accustomed to being the attack on his own- certainly the vids show him being the front of a passing machine, which doesn't completely describe the 'Nix...

Keen to see Rigters play- how do you say it? the rhymes are different...

Sanchez is sounding a lot like Toto, here's hoping he suprises us all and can replace Nick Ward..
