Watched the game again today just to see if I had changed my mind from last night.
In the first half we had too many players giving the ball away.We looked average to say the least. Was surprised Ben was playing at RB? The penalty should have been taken by someone else as guys that are NOT playing well will usually miss. Ifill was not having a good one either.
Both goals were poor defending, regardless of which side of the pitch they came from.
Second halh was a bit better, but I reckon Perth took their foot of the pedal.
We have won 3 in a row so I guess one bad one is allowed.
The problem is on Friday when we play Melbourne. We will have to improve out of site otherwise it could be a bath.
Their pace is going to be the problem --- also they will ge going all out as they have the Gold Coast next.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

"Phoenix skipper Andrew Durante admitted Dadi, who is fighting to earn a contract with the Phoenix for next season, should have never taken the penalty.

"I think when it comes to penalties the most confident picks the ball up and takes it," Durante said.

"He's scored three in two games, he's up against his old team.

"He was obviously confident.

"Eugene spoke to Paul and Paul allowed it.

"Hindsight's a beautiful thing, it probably was the wrong choice.

"But he put his hand up and acknowledged it.""

Scary stuff that there is seemingly not a designated penalty taker..and that confidence rules.  Shouldnt Durante have enforced whatever Ricki had said about penalties..irrespective of whether Dadi wanted to be the hero and or sock it to Perth.

Ifill is the dedicated penalty taker. Ifill maybe shouldn't have said to Eugene he could take it, but I think Ifill is that sort of a guy. Tricky for Durante if Dadi and Ifill work out between them that Dadi should take it instead.

I blame Eugene primarily. He wasn't the penalty taker so he should've stayed out of it.

So who would you bring Mulligan/Ferrante in for?

At this stage I wouldn't bring them in (maybe Ferrante for Diego actually) but when the suspensions start then give them a look at least.

Both goals could've been avoided if McKain and Durante were up with it.  I blame those two.  The first was disgraceful, Durante running lazily toward the ball and not being able to turn nearly fast enough, but still, where the hell was McKain?  Never should there be that much space for a striker there.

What a load of rubbish.

Fair enough, each to their own opinion but all I can ask is where were they?  They were nowhere near the play when the two goals were scored.  Had they been there then we'd have had a better chance of keeping them out.  I would've thought that obvious but apparently not.

Reminds me of Beckhams first game back in Milan against Genoa, they won a penalty and it was supposed to be Beckham to take it but he turned it down. Given it was his first game back, pressure from the audience, emotion... etc. He couldve taken it and made footy headlines around the world 'Beckham returns, Milan win' or something. Despite what Dadi said about not wanting to prove a point in his return to Perth, bollocks. He obviously wanted to or he wouldnt have taken it.

But at the same time, if I were Durante or Ifill and Dadi wanted it, I probably woudlve let him take it. I mean who would ever have envisioned such a sh*te penalty? Not me. Its easy to look back on these things and say he should never have taken it but if he put it away we would be all over Dadis cock.

Oh dear all sooooo unfortunate .. from our little enclave in the Away Zone, we set up a chant ( of sorts)  Give to Ifill .. but no one was listening!! OMG it was sooooo frustrating!

Of all the players to have taken the pen, Dadi was absolutely the least appropriate for that one .. far too personal for him, need a clinical finisher ... but history now.

Good to be an away fan for a change, gives a different perspective. 'The Shed' very well organised with their chanting etc, very attractive ground, all set for a great night out .. shame about the result.

Still, onwards now to Melbourne ...

Dadi seems like the kind of player who will earn redemption. Touch wood.
Permalink Permalink

Dadi used to take penalties for Perth (and scored penalty against us) so people would feel confident about his ability for spot kicks.
Agree though, he wasn't in it -not that he was getting much good ball service (everything to his had chest mainly) and you could see after he got a knock on his head he was always checking it.

We have such good people up front who can hold up the ball (greenie, Ifill, Dadi in particular) why do we continue to pump it to their chests / head so they have to bring the ball down before we can do anything.

Other gripe, apart from missed chances up front, mention of our mids Brown, Lia was almost non - existent - they were absent - maybe the way we played them out the game with ball over the top all the time.

Seemed the team got over hyped aggressively and forgot they were playng football not having a physical battle.

Siggy didn't suck at right back at all but but lack of awareness over something like watching for the man at the back post especially when he is the right back, well.... I laughed when he turned and started pointing out to the left where the ball came from. Uh buddy your man snuck in the back for a gimme. Who were you marking?

This thread needs a bit of perspective. One week Dadi is the man that parts water and the next he can f**k off back to Perth.

Oh dear..

I think most of the emotion comes from the fact Dadi had his enevitable bad game at a very unfortunate time, against his old team, and in this game he made a bad decision with a terrible consequence.

Agree. I have been one of the most critical about that penalty (because it was appalling), but a bad game doesn't change the fact that he is a good player who can play a role up front for us. I think that bicycle kick raised expectations of some as to what he can do and what he is here for.

It was the worst penalty I have ever seen - so hopefully he will be motivated to score a hat-trick in the next game. One bad penalty doesn't make a season.

Crucial things to consider:

1. Really naff shirts
2. NO lucky head bandage (I mean the closest was Dadi's beany/head warmer) - Perth had one (need I say more)
3. Different time zone - see above
4. Most likely key players biorythyms had a double zero.
5. See Tyler's post about 'pyul winning

Really not surprised at the result in the light of day (albeit overcast and drizzling).

6. Ref was a goober. Couldn't believe we won the cards, and Perth were taking the piss. Sekulovski got away with a kick. We get Manny and Siggie out for 3 weeks. A no justice game on that count.

7. We were patchy rather than appalling and if we had got the penalty could really have put the pressure on. The goals were big mistakes not sustained and rewarded pressure from Perth.

I don't blame Durante for the penalty.  Like he said, most confident picks it up and takes it.  Dadi picked it up and also asked Ifill and Ifill agreed.  Dura would seem like a douche overruling that.

At the time I, like everyone it seems, felt it was somehow wrong that Ifill wasn't taking the penalty. It was like sentimentalism was overriding professionalism. It was clearly the wrong decision before the kick was even taken, and it was Durante's responsibility to make that known and, if you like, make an executive decision - that's what being a captain is all about.

This wasn't some exhibition game, this was a vital league match, and however badly we had played up to that point we were still in the game. We needed our successful designated penalty taker to do the job. I'm just thinking what captains like Muscat, Culina, Moore would've had to say in the same situation and I'm pretty sure I know the answer.

I have no idea why we are complaining about the ref. If he was any good then Dadi and Manny would've both been sent

The ref was inconsistent- especially at the start. Perth seemed to come out and hack us time and time again, and we ended up with the yellow cards.

It was a performance as bad as Dura and Hearfield for the goal.

Surely his Muscat/McKain....whoever whatever card showed how much of a clue he had about what was going on

I'm not saying it cost us the game. But if you don't know if you will get protection you get tentative on the ball. The same with your tackles if the yellow cards are arbitrary.

Players can kick out and not get pinged, slide in two feet up and not get pinged, or be nowhere near the play and get pinged.

It's up there with the shirts as a reason the game was silly and doesn't count.

p.s. Terry S. was watching the game at Fox's in Auckland and left before halftime.

1st goal was a combination of three players out of position, Hertfield, Durante & McKain

Hertfield was standing off the goalscorer instead of marking him tight, Durante followed the flight of the ball and was drawn out of position, McKain was over on the right hand side miles out of position and of no use to anyone.

If Mckain had been in position he may have been able to support Durante when he was drawn out of position and beaten....but he wasn't.

2nd goal was nearly all Hertfield just very poor defending but what was Vince Lia doing as the ball came over into the box!!! and still haven't managed to work out where McKain was again but would stop short of blaming him.

The sooner Sigmund is reinstated at CD the better as McKain really is a liability there, I thought Sigmund was our best player on a night of below par performances

A bit harsh on McKain to say he's a liability - his form in defence has been very good overall (except from some generally awful distribution). There's not much between them but personally I also like Sigmund better at CB.
