Hearfield at LB?  How does that work?

You tell him he's on the left, draw a picture, wind him up and let him go....

I thought Manny might be a left back option but then he's been bloody good where he is, so leave him.

Siggy, McKain, Durante and Hearfield in the backline = friggin solid. Sounds great to me

No problems with Siggy at RB. He's been out for quite a while now so he will be fired up to make an impact. being slightly more defensive away to Perth is not a bad idea. If it does not work then it can be changed against Melbourne.

I would not mind if there was quite a bit of player rotation in the first two games. Keep everyone a bit fresher. Then field the best team against Adelaide in Chch. That is a game we must win and we should field our top 11. If we go into that game with key players tired or jaded then we will miss a huge opportunity to pick up a vital 3 points.

it would be great to pick up a win against perth or melb....but realistically two draws would be OK. if we then won against Adelaide then it would have been a good week.

My only concern is Siggy's lack of pace - he was brutally exposed in one game earlier this season IIRC.

I just think beating Adelaide is key- we can't really count on our away form. I'd hope for a win in Perth tbh, not so sure about anything from Melbourne but you never know. Backline could be interesting, I think that should be all good but certainly dangerous from Ricki not to put Manny back there.

Have no concern for Siggy; he will eat these soft Perth lads for dinner!

But yeah, I think I would agree. Particularly when playing him full back, I suppose. Needs to turn quickly and all that. Still, I'm sure he will do an admirable job.

With Manny on the field, we can always alter things during the game, and move McKain into the midfield if things look bad.

That is actually a very good idea. Good thinking nix.

I think its the best choice, although I first thought of Muscat just dropping back.
Guess Ricki wants to keep his winning formation. Otherwise I would have just brought Greenacre in and Dropped Muscat back to LB.

But good call and agree that we need to be quite solid at the back for these games

Midnight kickoff.....finishes at 2.am NZST

As much as I love the phoenix i can't keep awake and concentrate on football at 1 am. No problems I thought....I will just get up and watch the replay the next day.

Except there does not appear to be a replay the next day...or the day after. Whats with Sky?
They have a replay of Villa vs Westham at 6.am on Saturday....FFS I would bet that there would be more interest in the Nix game than the Villa game.

The rest of the weekend is tennis.....now I do enjoy watching nubile young woman in short skirts grunting like pigs but I WOULD RATHER WATCH THE BLOODY FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My concern precisely.

Couldn't Hearfield stay on the right and Muscat go into the left-back position with McKain covering Muscat's DM role and Siggy coming in for McKain?

Thats what I would have thought but obviously they like what Manny brings to the team as a DM. At least with Jonny there we have that option to change if Siggy is getting a hard time.

Who do Perth have down the flanks? Sterjovski at a push, Pellegrino? Nothing the Sea Monster can't eat up

How much pace does Perth have up front these days?  A season or two ago Rukavysta or however you spell his name was a massive threat on the break, but I'd say Siggy has enough positional awareness to keep anyone under tabs.  He's hardly a disco troy going foward but I'm okay with him hanging back for an away game in Perth.

And against Melbourne?

Permalink Permalink

Don't care what anyone says - Lochy is a huge, huge loss. A big part of why we have been playing well is because the fullbacks have been given license to get forward as we have had Manny covering them when they do.

They play through the middle of the park pace out wide wont be an issue

And if I remember right, Siggy was burnt by Brosque, who would probably skin most defenders in the league for pace, maybe even Disco

Yup the second goal conceeded in the 3-1 loss to Sydney.  Bought a tear to my eye (of mixed emotions actually, bloody great to watch, and not so great to watch...)

Didn't realise that Perth was playing tonight. Could that work in our favour, bit of a tight turn-around for Perth, levelling up the usual jet-lag of the visiting teams?

I see Sky have relegated all of this weekend's A-League games to Sky3.  Makes ya wonder, why bother with HD.

So far I think everyone's been saying the same sort of thing.  Definitely one of the harder positions to cover with our current squad IMO

I'm only worried that Siggy isn't exactly a player with a forward mentality. Although, it was his break which eventuated in the corner kick in the 1-0 game vs Bahrain. But let's face it: he won't go as forward as Hearfield, or even Manny would at RB. If to this you add that Disco Boy will be playing at LB and might not be as confident as at RB, then there is a chance that we won't be doing much pushing from the back - which Ricky seems to want, a lot.
This being said, we will probably be just as good in the defensive phase, as Siggy is probably better at covering than Lochy.

Let's hope we turn in a massive performance and get 3 points! Although I'd be happy with a win and a draw or even 2 draws from the next 2 massive games.

vs Adelaide: convincing win

if we do win, it won't be because we're without him.

The rest will do the world of good for him, he's been playing the full 90 week in week out since July.

Do we change our formation? Three CDs at the back? Lochy, love him or hate him, is the best LB we've got.

yes it will.

I had a dream. A dream where we played quality football. A dream where no one ran to the sideline only to kick the ball out with no opposition near him. A dream where the left back actually played a good game.

I woke up and realised the match day squad was without one, T.Lochhead.

oh happy days !! OH HAPPY DAY-AY-AYS !! ohhhhhhhhh HA-PP-YYYYY DAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYS !

trust me, this is a blessing in disguise.
