Congratulations Anaru 👏

Whats the benefits of signing him to a pro contract? Not critiquing it but is it a security thing like another team can poach him on a scholarship or get a smaller fee?
Probably just a continuation of this from last year with the collaboration between NZF and FIFA.

https://wellingtonphoenix.com/news/wellington-phoenix-and-new-zealand-football-announce-partnership-to-support-development-of-kiwi-talent/

Personally I like it and hope he goes from strength to strength. It certainly sounds like he's got a bit to offer as well which is a good start.

We have so far, and will have to continue being proactive with deals like this now that Auckland and South Island United are around. Players - who will still have to work hard in the group and prove themselves of course - have more options in this country than they ever have previously, so the fight for talent is only going to intensify over the coming years.

Slightly off topic here for a minute as well, and whether or not it may be needed in the A-League is a topic for another day, but in the MLS if your youth/reserve team players are called up to the senior squad a certain number of matchdays they are automatically elevated to pro terms. Could be something that has merit down the line perhaps?

Ahh, good memory! So maybe it's already a thing?

Although I haven't been able to find anything concrete on the details in regulations or otherwise. Even in the MLS regulations I had to dip down into MLS Next Pro documents to find the right clauses.

You'd imagine it's a see how the team goes and review through Nov & Dec.
Higher chance of picking up a suitable Ishige replacement in the Jan window than now.

Read that most J1/J2 contracts finish around 31st January, if Chiefy was to look there again.

I found this https://pfa.net.au/news/apl-and-pfa-announce-further-updates-to-the-liberty-a-league-women-cba/#:~:text=This%20restructure%20includes%20a%20revised%20trigger%20for%20an%20increase%20in%20salary%20if%20the%20Scholarship%20Player%20now%20appears%20in%2050%25%20of%20the%20Regular%20Season.

I did wonder if similar reasoning was behind Liam Gillion making less appearances for Auckland FC as the season went on.  That if he played too much more, his scholarship contract would have to be upgraded.

I'd put that down to Gillion's own profligacy rather than any appearance target he had to hit to upgrade his contract.

Plus Moreno as a lateish signing that took a while to integrate.

Inasmuch as Liam Gillion has a lot of skills to offer, accuracy is not among them. Even putting the word "target" anywhere near his name in one sentence is already a bit ambitious.

Would be surprised if he looks at Japan again tbh. Not that Ishige and Nagasawa haven't done well. They've been pretty solid and good contributors to the team.

But I wouldn't say they've been stars like some other Visa signings over the years: i.e., Felipe/Daniel, Ifill, Kraev, Zawada (I know I've missed a bunch but you get my point).

I would still take Gillion at the Nix.

Don't think he fits our system at all. He has to play on the wing to make the most of his dribbling. Hes not an attacking midfielder and not a wing back.

I disagree, I think he could add value as an attacking player in our side. Whether that's wing or attacking midfield, or anywhere in the front third, I'd take the gamble.

Guillion has amazing ability to beat a man but his end product is really lacking. We dont really play wingers. We also have Walker to come back in and also Muilsinic???? Actually whats the latest with his injury? Did we sign a dud because he has out for months? Has he every appeared in  Nix shirt because i dont remember him preseason

Arminento wasn't a wingback until 2-3 months ago.

True, but I've seen nothing of Gillion to make me think he'd be a good enough defender to play there.

In what seems like a backhanded indictment of the Phoenix squad, on his podcast, Piney pointing out that there are 4 kiwi free agents who the Nix should be thinking of picking up: Tuiloma, Grieve, Mata & van Hattum. I.e. this team isn't good enough, they need reinforcements.

Also talk about Waine (who while isn't a free agent, he might as well be). Michael Burgess also said that he knows that Auckland FC approached and tried to sign Waine in the summer.

I'd take Waine back just to help an old friend out, but I don't think any of those names are what we need. We need replacements/upgrades on Ishige, Najjarine & Roa Conchie in our "#10" spots. I'd have preferred to see us sign Grieves over Najjarine or Mileusnic but I don't think you would expect him to be our saviour.

Ruptured his ACL December last year, and last heard of training at the Glory.

Knows Chiefy. Knows the squad.

Whats Pineys podcast called?

Would take Tuiloma in an instant....even for a half season. Mata yes as well. Mata  probably would need a month to get match fit. Eze is a lonely figure up front.
 Not going to happen though

I don't think we get Mata purely for the fact that Piper is now being played up front. Piper is the bustling forward who will lay off for Eze...when fit. Which surely can't be far off.

Grieve is an interesting idea. Though I imagine he is trying to stay and play in the UK?

Interesting. Van Hattum was in the crowd vs Mac. Maybe he is incoming with Ishige out for the season.

Greive is in the USL with San Antonio, and from memory contracted there next season

He was injured most of 2025, but when fit didn’t do much. Mostly a sub at SA

The Nix need a playmaker aka another Chico, other spots are pretty much covered adequately enough

Transfermarkt says his contract expires on the 30th of this month, but the club has a 1 year extension option

Knows Chiefy. Knows the squad.

That puts him in the company of Sutton, Wooton, Pennigton (not Sail anymore though). They also know Chiefy, they know the squad, aaaand ... they are at Glory.
And Glory have sacked David Zdrilic, so who knows, all of them may be also playing under a coach they know (Adam Griffiths, at least temporarily).

Ishige was nearly there.  And his strike against the post in his final game was a reminder.   Very similar was FDV free kick last Sunday against Brisbane that struck the top bar.  Both were great free kicks.

Brown was a better passer than many give him credit for too, but was often a box to box iirc…but was creative and scored some crackers at key times.

McGlinchey no slouch either! Daniel was a wide player I guess.
