Wouldn't turn my nose up at any AFC prospects at this stage..

Mata - easy yes.
Gillion - yes.
Moreno - yes (although price might be a bottleneck).
Toomey - yes.

Basically anyone I would take. Pretty depressing.

The other point is Moreno scored almost as many as Kosta, with way less game time. There will be players out there. We just have to get a couple of goal scorers and encourage a couple of locals to knock in a few too.

maybe wootton asked for a 3 year deal in negotiations, i.e. perth gave me 2, can you better that?

On the A league website an article states that Wooten’s contract is 2 years with Perth and not 3, which was the reason Gill said why they lost him

So potentially more false news

Might be 2 + 1 or Gilly’s gossip grapevine was wrong…

Won't be Toomey - Personally think he doesn't pass the 'no dickheads policy' sniff test.

Not just for the spray he gave a sprawled Oluwayemi either, but after he left the WeeNix and went to Eastern Suburbs and subsequently scored for them against the WeeNix in the National League - well he went over and gave Gilly the big 🤫 as a celebration, which obviously didn't go down very well.

Suffice to say, and he wouldn't have known this at the time, but you don't do that to the man who still remains the Director of Football at the club. Nor do you do that to a man with a longer term memory. 🤷‍♂️

Gill said in his interview that they had been approached by agents from a couple of AFC players. I guess one could be Moreno fishing for a deal. Who else is off contract or wants to leave?
Ridiculous. Moreno only left AFC because of the money. There's no way the Nix could match Foley.

I'm going to guess it's Gillion, the beloved "rat boy" of T-AFC. I'd be very surprised if it's Randall, he started in the semifinal and even though he got a bit burned for pace, Corica clearly has confidence in him

Passionate player, good impact player, scored some goals and well liked by the crowd.

But tailed off towards the end of the season and when you are playing Francoise for 120 minutes out of 180 in the semis and Moreno is only worth 60 minutes then there is a problem.

I’m not saying that Francoise is the answer because he is not and shouldn’t be in the starting team  but you want your import to be playing the majority of minutes.

AFC always have had an issue up front and if they are to improve that’s where they need to sign a class import and kiwi player in the left wing and  striker position.

Is Luis Toomey any good? I don't really remember him from any of the Auckland FC games I watched.

Otherwise realistically I suppose it's Max Mata who wouldn't be surprised if he's not that keen on returning to a recently relegated Shrewsbury after some not so fond memories of his first stint there.

Released as he was asking for too much to extend. Also heard he's a bit homesick. So it's not like AFC didn't want to keep him from what I can tell.

Edit: Also to answer your question about their first year cap reducing - apparently they get their cap dispensations for the first 3 seasons, so the cap available To them should be the same unless the APL make drastic changes to the cap for the upcoming season. They are probably upping the pay of the players they have extended though I would imagine

I keep reading on here about the Toxic environment at the Nix. I'd love to see some proof and not opinions. As one whom attends their practices regularly, I watch them coming out to the training field and leaving as well. There does not appear to be any sign of toxicity. They chat, joke with each other and during the practices no one is ignored, left out or ostracised. So if you do have proof please tell us. If anything they all seemed amped up to do their best. Even when Woots & Sam knew they were going, they were still involved with all the fun and games a group of guys do so to speak.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Unless you are very, very good at what you do, you never burn your bridges out of sheer spite, and especially not publicly.  Toomey is either a spiteful character, or is deluded about his quality, both of which traits disqualify him in my eyes.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

I believe he asked for more money which was declined. AFC fans better get used to that as their financial structure gets decreased to fit in line with the A League  regulations. If the Nix grabbed him, it would be great.

Corica also didn't like Moreno's work rate, which I presume is why he didn't start in the last 2 months. Didn't fit the hard press that Stevie C likes I'm guessing.

The Colombian leaving will give AFC cap space for a visa 9. Mata also leaves, and maybe Jonty Bidois steps up top get more mins off the pine.

30 yr old Scott Galloway a bit of a forgotten man at AFC. Last featured in a match day squad on New Years Day, and last playing mins a few days prior on 28th Dec. Is he injured? Nix in the market for a Sutton replacement.

Galloway's not mentioned in the article below, and Transfermarket shows he's contracted at AFC until 2026.

Putting aside his distasteful sledge of Oluwayemi, Toomey looked good against the Nix at the ROF. Assist for Brimmer's 2nd goal. But as the season went on Corica often had both Howieson & Jake B on the bench, so Toomey was completely squeezed out. He may have to look at the Scandy minor leagues or USL next. Agruably the best player in the NZ domestic leagues 2024

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360703717/auckland-fc-win-big-leagues-awards-neyder-moreno-departs

Moreno's departure will free up a visa spot Auckland will need to make full use of as they reload for another charge at the Championship in their second season.

A No 9 to play ahead of May up top might be the No 1 item on their shopping list. It's unclear whether All Whites striker Max Mata will be back, as he returns to his English parent club Shrewsbury Town, who have just been relegated from League One to League Two.

Forward Logan Rogerson – who was left out of Darren Bazeley's most recent All Whites squad despite scoring nine and creating two others – was said by Auckland director of football Terry McFlynn to have verbally agreed to re-sign and told Stuff earlier this month he was hoping to reach agreement on a deal soon.

Attacking midfielder Luis Toomey is the other player whose future is up in the air. He played just 105 minutes across eight appearances while on a scholarship contract and will be too old for one next season.

I'm going to be glass half full now. My plan..
- Ditch 2 dead weight imports - Josh and  Ngasawa - free's up all but 1 import spot
- Sign some kiwis desperate to get to the world cup - McGarry, DeJong and Dyer.

Aren’t you asking for proof here of the opposing argument while not providing any proof for your own argument?

It would be unusual and risky to a career in a niche work area to make a public statement slandering people/club etc. It also seems unusual that so many staff choose to ‘go travelling’ at the same time.

Lot of talk about offloading Nagasawa, Ishige and Josh but I'm not that fussed about Retre either. We've really painted ourselves into a corner with all those two year contracts. It's quite amazing to look back at the season and see how often those four players failed to make the starting lineup.

The club cant win they are normally getting flak for having one year contracts. Not sure i can see them trying to get rid of all of those thats a bit to pay out then expect them to pay more to get replacements.

Not really sure what people dont get about it they havnt said they are all travelling. One has left because his partner was over Wellington they have indicated a couple want to travel nothing unusual about people in their mid 20s wanting to travel. Then pretty sure something was said about a couple of them wanting to go back to Aussie.

In fairness, the “government” have done their level best to make Wellington a place in the doldrums. No coincidence that huge numbers are leaving NZ so maybe it’s more of a reflectance that the bad season helped exacerbate that.

Lot of talk about offloading Nagasawa, Ishige and Josh but I'm not that fussed about Retre either. We've really painted ourselves into a corner with all those two year contracts. It's quite amazing to look back at the season and see how often those four players failed to make the starting lineup.
Retre played or was unavailable due injury for 25/27 games starting 16/21 games he featured in. I can't remember if the games he didn't feature but not injured were when he was nursing his hammy, such as sitting on the bench, or not picked for form/tactical reasons. Ishige started in 24/27 games. Nagasawa started 18, and Josh 19.

Gillion would be fun. He reminds me a bit of that Vanuatu guy...Tratori?? that played for us years ago. Would dribble past six players and then miss the open goal. Passed when he he should have shot and shot when he should have passed. He would at least give us moments of excitement....and frustration, so hes very Phoenix compatible.

Wouldn't turn my nose up at any AFC prospects at this stage..

Mata - easy yes.
Gillion - yes.
Moreno - yes (although price might be a bottleneck).
Toomey - yes.

Basically anyone I would take. Pretty depressing.

Meh. Not sure we have much of a leg to stand on at the moment.

Maybe we need one or two of these personalities. Someone with an edge, something to prove, able to fire the rest of the team up.

I don't know much about Toomey to be honest, just more of a general comment.

Might not be the right place but Despite the crap season we had it’s things like this that make me smile, playing in a top 5 league (ok was, now relegated) but still repping the nix.

Wootons comment in his statement.  Again shows we aren't pushing to win here.

“It was refreshing to hear his determination, and we share the same ambitions.”
