Rufer to Vietnam? Interesting move if you want a challenge. They are super passionate about their football, its not a joke league in terms of supporters and ambiance.
Down sides would be playing in the suffocating heat and humidity though its cool in the north in winter. But HCM city reminds me of Bangkok. Hot , crowded, noisey and polluted. Not a family place IMO

Yes. Tim Payne and Luke Brooke Smith money, I'm sure they will use that with only 14 players here, and only maybe 7 starters at most here now. 4 foreign players to target with that as leaders, and the rest affordable players from here and Aus.

The goal keeping was a major weakness last season, and it cost the Nix points.
The return of Gothard could well be the best signing the club make before the new campaign.

Well - and I've had this passed on to me by several people now, so as far as I'm concerned the cat is out of the bag - Henry Gray is in Wellington with the squad.

100% would be for a loan from Ipswich, but regardless, would be an excellent pickup for us!

There ya go to get the ball rolling with some speculation. 🙂

Was reasonable in League 2 for a poor team last year, should be a good pickup with the bonus of letting us use our visa spots in the outfield.

Good piece of business, I wonder if our returning goalkeeping coach got this across the line??

He won't be super expensive and is local, which are too big positives.

Now to sign Verstrate as our DM import!

Gothard would certainly know Henry Gray.
The former at the Nix 2018-2022, and the latter 2021-2023 (Academy).
It wouldn't surprise if expat Brits Greeny, Coleman & Gothard between them knew someone on the Ipswich coaching staff as well.

Gray also in around the All Whites and OlyWhites, where Gothard was GK coach.

Last year I thought Kees Sims would have been a good loan candidate to the Nix from GAIS. But Gray makes more sense as the seasons better align, compared to Sweden with the ALM.

Never fall in love with a loan player. 🥹

Seems like a bloody good lad though, and although it's very early on in preseason and news has been pretty slow on the transfer incomings, the two we have managed to get across the line (McGarry and now Gray) are quality pickups.

There's reason for optimism folks!

He was excellent last season, that's a fantastic bit of business. Always good to wake up to a YH transfer bomb!

Not a bad gig. A full season professionally as the main man between the sticks could what launches Henry Gray's career. Plus him and Hughes together we may be watching the development of a very critical CB/GK partnership of the future All Whites.

Useful that he's played a bit of football with the likes of LKH, Loke and Walker re last year's NZU20s.
Probably also Hughes, Sheridan and Conchie further back in the Academy.

Listed as 6"4, but then again, so was AP once. He does look massive compared to what he looked like in his academy days, unsurprisingly.

Lets hope the "optimism" continues to rise when the other new signings get eventually announced, tempered with the potential loss of Alex.

Week 1 of a 14 week preseason comes to an end today and we've got 16 on the books (one scholarship included) and one '*' as we wait to hear on the potential move for LBS. Rufer also set to make a decision on his future, although it appears that signs are pointing more towards an exit at this stage.

I'll have to have a look back over the past 2-3 seasons (maybe even longer) but it feels quite a frequent occurrence that we've gone into preseason with 12-14 on the books, so I guess in that regard we're ahead of schedule. The fact that the two guys we've brought in are upgrades on what we had for those positions last year is also a positive step.

4 x Visa players to come, and by my count at least 4 more Kiwis/Aussies (if and when LBS departs). Hopefully a few more experienced heads in the mix too, but overall I'm ambivalent as to whether they're New Zealanders or Aussies, just as long as they can come in and do a job for us!

Rome wasn't built in a day. Get a couple more in the door before the end of July would be a huge positive in my eyes, but it just seems to be a waiting game for now.

As for the last bit about optimism - It's why I don't get player names and numbers on my kits either! Club legends or not, inevitably they always end up leaving. 🥲

If you take "coming weeks" literally, yes should be some more announcements pre month end.

Wonder what pre season games the Nix are lining up. No doubt there will be the usual 3 game Aussie tour in September playing other ALM clubs (normally in NSW)

Pity that South Island United effectively don't exist at the moment with their OPL squad scattered to the winds. Would otherwise be a useful fixture in pre season.

It's hard these days not to compare the Nix to Auckland FC, who have have Spurs this month and then the FIFA Intercontinental Cup game against AFC champs Al-Ahli in Saudi in August.  Al-Ahli with Riyad Mahrez, Ivan Toney, Franck Kessié and Édouard Mendy among others. Presumably Auckland will also get at least one warmup in Saudi as well pre that Intercontinental Cup match.  If AFC do get a big upset win over Al-Ahli they would then play CAF Champs Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa.

Henry Gray is the 16th men’s player contracted to the Wellington Phoenix for the 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season with further squad announcements to be made in the coming weeks.

Some big ifs, but if we sign Hollman and if Greenie’s imports are good, that’s a very solid team.

Experienced young players like Piper, LKH and Roa Conchie on the bench, alongside some guys with  potential in Cassidy, Loke, Smith, Walker, McCarron and AKH.

Couple of proven goal scorers with bags of them and a simple philosophy please.
I guess Nagasawa is our David Ball type player, but I wouldn’t mind a younger version to, to play on that other side.

Couldn’t see the emoji in the signing teaser?

Piper up front with a CF(V) that can play off him would be my pick. I honestly think he's got something special in terms of mentality that the Nix have been lacking for a while. Use the other V spot on a right back.

Would it be completely gaga to hope the Nix are looking into an RB signing?
As a fan I'd be very happy to give Loke an extended run to see where his development is at. He has played with a lot of passion for the badge in the limited opportunities he's had. Also seems to have been punished and been dropped for being found out in a couple of games last season where players well senior to him were also found out and didn't face the same consequences.
I suppose the Nix have invested heavily in Sheridan and want to see a result, in that sense he's more than welcome to have a breakout season but not sure he has had too many performances of note for his now 50 odd appearances. I just don't feel like Sheridan with Loke deputising, and Tuiloma able to move right in a pinch is the most robust plan for that position long term.

I can't remember it word for word but I'm pretty sure Gilly said in the media after Payne was sold that we won't be in the market for a right back.

And I'm not against that call from the club either tbh. It's a sore point at national level and has been for forever and a day. Sheridan has always said he's wanted a shot in his natural position - He's no world beater, but I think he's been solid when given a chance there previously (as well as being shoehorned into other positions too). Just don't put him at LB, because he is horrendously one footed.

Does Weenix's Ryan Lee (age 19) play on the right or left as a fullback? Is he in the picture for a Scholarship deal?

Bit of a standout in that Wrexham game. Assist for Flowerdew's goal.

Nix might only fill 4 of the visa spots being season kicks off, keeping options open for the January window. They have done it before.

Only problem with using a visa spot on a RB instead of another striker is that it would leave our forward depth pretty shallow.

I’m a huge fan of Piper but if we had two import strikers, he’d be a brilliant battering ram to sub on late and spam crosses to.

I think primarily a left back but can play either probably.  Has decent pace and can get forward for good crosses.

Sheridan, Loke & Tuiloma should cover RB well enough, but we need decent CB depth to ensure we will be OK if Tuiloma is needed out wide.

Our biggest gap is upfront, both strikers and midfielders.  If we spend any money on a visa player that is where it should go.
The rest may simply have to do with the players we have. Sheridan is young but not a newbie, and this could be his year to mature into the RB role.
