There certainly have always been some good players in the Aussie state leagues capable of stepping up to the A-League or higher whose ability was never spotted by A-League clubs.
One of the most prominent examples is current Scotland international striker Lyndon Dykes who appeared in the World Cup, who is basically an Aussie.
Born on the Gold Coast to Scottish immigrant parents but he never played above Queensland state league level though Brisbane Roar had ample opportunity to scout him, he left for Scotland aged 20 and was instantly snapped up by Queen of the South, soon moving on to Premier League Livingstone, then QPR, Birmingham City and Charlton in the Championship.
The Nix have signed some good players from the Aussie state leagues in the past who were neglected by their local A-League sides, principally club legend Manny Muscat.
Another was striker Mirjan Pavlovic signed from Sydney United.
Dylan Fox, Josh Brindell-South, Adam Parkhouse, Blake Powell, Lewis Italiano are other players picked up by the Nix from state league clubs whose talent wasn't appreciated by their local A-League sides.
Burgess would be the best Nix state leagues recruit no?
No
Yes.
Kept Singh on the bench at times.  Longish A league career. Outstanding for Newcastle last year. At or near the top of this list for me. Your mileage obviously varies.
Seen this Burgess fact shared around a bit but it's pretty innocuous. Burgess only benched Singh in one game at the end of the season when Rudan was trying some big-brained stuff, shaking up the team following a loss to Adelaide trying to secure finals. Singh had 6 G/A in the two games prior (including that 8-2 CCM fixture), and promptly returned to the starting XI afterwards.

Rudan also tried some other weird things near the end of that season (David Williams at RWB, for example)

Louis Fenton was on fire that season at RWB, got injured and Rudan tried desperately to find a solution, incl yes trying Williams in that spot.

Agree I think it's a bit of a myth Rudan benched Singh for Burgess, because the latter was off to WU with Marko. Singh's form actually got a bit scratchy in some matches near the end of that season. Though obviously Bayern had seen enough promise to give Sarpreet his dream move.

Burgess wasnt played over Singh just the once, he also started ahead of him in our finals loss at Victory.

Where the hell did this come from? 😪
Possibly an early indication that he wasn't going to re-sign beyond the end of next season so we're cashing in early?

That's a little disappointing if true. Definitely seems destined for bigger things and you can't blame him for taking the move to the Championship, but I would have liked to see him shine as a starter before he moved overseas. Hopefully we can add a sell-on clause, in case his career takes off in England.

Hi - Portsmouth FC fan in peace.  I've just seen a couple of stories linking us with one of your players, Luke Brooke-Smith - and it sounds, from reports, as though it's close to a done deal.  It's come out-of-the-blue this afternoon, literally not even a murmur of a rumour up to now.

I just wondered if you could give some insight on what sort of player he is - the reports describe an attacking midfielder, but would love to hear what his best position(s) is/are and also what his strengths and weaknesses are?  Any information gratefully received!

Kid is very solidly built, so no worries about the physicality of the English game & has good speed. Very much a diamond in the rough though, so you are buying based on potential rather than actual first team performances.

https://x.com/i/status/2075935519884955650What's he like? He's no Ben Waine.
LBS is fast, strong and skilful. Can beat a man. Powerful shot. Set up and scored goals in a very limited number of minutes.
Mostly played on the wing. Never really got a good run of games, which must have been frustrating for him, and for fans. Well some anyway.
I'm not surprised he's moved on. IMHO, failure to field him was a huge own goal by successive coaches.

Thanks @RR and @Nixin - appreciate the responses - wasn't expecting anything so quickly given the time difference!  He sounds interesting - we signed Segecic from Sydney last summer who exceeded expectations in his first Championship season - though saw Brooke-Smith's age and figured we were looking at much more of a development project (despite spending much of the preceding season coming off the bench for Sydney, Segecic had a full season on loan in the Netherlands in 'mens' football). Really enjoy these sort of signings - hopefully he's a success and Phoenix have negotiated a healthy sell-on!

It probably does appear a strange signing as he wasn’t even deemed good enough to start for the Nix last year and for the World Cup  a cultural architect was selected over him with limited minutes in your national league.

That however is more a slight on those coaches. There is a player in there.

Likely 2-3years behind Segecic in development but he is younger.

How did the rest of the Australians go in your team last year?

His time to shine was last season, chances squandered by both coaches in my opinion.

Yes he was rough around the edges especially in defense, but consistently changed games coming on late in the few appearances he made. Good luck to the lad.

Take this one on the chin, a loss for the Nix but a win for nz football having another kiwi playing In the championship , and a payday for the nix.
Although it does make me wonder why GSR was released if this was going on.

He’s a confident dribbler and has been developing his passing and vision in counter attacks and breaking through on the wing.

At lower levels he had a powerful shot from the edge of the box. We’ve only seen that a little at the Nix.

He generally lifted the tempo of our play and put the opposition on the back foot. I remember his first game or two he seemed to press with almost a spider tackle which we haven’t seen since.

Not sure that he’s as tough as the Aussies yet. And he wasn’t quite a guaranteed starter, but he was changing games and scaring opposition.

He’s young enough that if he listens to the coaches he could develop all kinds of skills.

But I think his two best points have been 1) confident with ball at feet to run 2) developing vision and game awareness and the passing skills to take advantage of it.

A bit sad we won’t see more of him here before he heads overseas.

I did see one 'report' (post on X I think) saying the LBS had "recently departed" the club. Made me wonder if LBS had been confused with GSR - probably only by the reporter/poster rather than who is on their way to Pompey.

In terms of not starting, I suspect this was more a management decision because he is so talented but also so young. Always thought we should havec used him more this season. Won assist of the month twice last season. IMO probably should've gone to the World Cup for NZ as a back-up.

It's a massive shame we'll never get to see how good he is as a starter for the Nix, but with on year left on his deal it's good we won't lose him on a free. I really hope he can do well for Portsmouth in the Championship and we have a decent sell-on clause.

Really happy for Luke he has worked hard for this and is a bloody nice guy as well. Really hope he goes well
But bloody PO and getting sick of hearing the Phoenix banging on about their academy system when they are starting to develop a record of letting young guys leave or flat out not signing them when its obvious they have massive potential.
Why he wasnt used instead of one of the leaving players i will never understand,he did some bloody good stuff in some games only for the next week to either be unused on the bench or not selected.
As for NZ Football disgraceful they gave trips to people who were never going to get on the fieled or back office staff who had no need to go,instead of acouple of young players who are likely to be part of our next squad.

That list of clubs i need to keep an eye on keeps growing.

Go well Luke

Decent fee for a young and mostly unproven lad, I imagine we've got sell on clauses too.

Disappointed we didnt get to see more of him but his potential was always above A-League level. If he wasn't going to sign an extension because of overseas interest then now is the time to sell.

Gotta think we have to go big on a local player now likely Singh the main option. And some higher quality imports. We've generated a bit of money now 500k for Payne, 800k for LBS, World Cup money and hopefully will get more from Surman. Got our 2 biggest earners off the wage bill time for Dome and co to show their ambition.

Worth noting LBS’s dad is a Brit, so likely has a UK passport if that is still useful getting work visa organised etc

He’s a long way from being Championship ready I think. So maybe first half of the season o playing for Pompey’s U21s then a loan deal down in L1/L2?

But yeah nice to see him a fellow ex Nix teenager Perniskie get UK club deals in the same week. The attacking future of the AWs?

And for Pompey fans, LBS has been solely focused on football for only about the last 4 years. Prior to that juggling being a top BMX rider as well. Hence the chunky thighs

Honestly quite disappointed with this news. Why did we not put another couple of years on his contract when we signed him? Similar to Lucas Kelly Heald??

If we are only ever going to be a development club you really have to put in long contracts for these young prospects. That means also paying them more to keep them round longer! Otherwise, you're going to end up selling them for less and never seeing them playing in the starting 11.

This season is really starting to look like another average or even shit season. We won't be competitive without the players and then we'll end up firing Greenacre for not getting results despite not having the players for it. He is no miracle worker and will need investment behind him.

Disappointing for us but fantastic for LBS. Go well kid, knuckle down and make your debut hopefully this season!

I mean we did sign him for 3 years which is on the longer side for A-League contracts. Maybe after his first season we should've pushed for another year or at least mid way through last season but with his limited minutes he might've been advised against it. I think its also harder with hyped up youngsters like LBS and GSR where they will have agents telling them its not in their best interest to resign compared to the likes of Sheridan or LKH who are seen as potential talents in the A-League but not really hyped up enough they'd be players to go on further than the A-League.

You have given up on the squad months before all new players could be signed. Wrong. Still 4 new foreign players to sign and a number from here/Australia. Yes it will be challenging to get the right players on attack and midfield but they have until September to do that. Lets give them another 7 weeks then judge.

I wouldn't say given up, but considering the lack of investment over the last couple seasons I'm not holding out hope I guess. The investment over the last half of last season I found a bit strange in hindsight, why not do that at the start of the season. Hopefully they open their pockets over the next few months. We'll see.

Kazu is at this stage going to start the season as the left sided 10 (would have been ahead of LBS), if Greenie sets up the same.

Some of what happened then was experienced/proven attacking midfielders/wingers got hurt too much. Marco Rojas, Stefan Colakovski, Chico, Nikola Mileusnic, Sarpreet Singh.
What they must do now is prioritize bringing in new players that won't be wavering on fitness or only recovered from injury 1 week ago. Must be fit and ready, no excuses.

First of hearing about LBS, happy for him and from his POV a no brainer, you had two coaches that didn't use him much (especially Greenie, who had a free go with the team).

Moves, gets to train with better players while giving your club a decent fee (comparatively) and if he needs more game time he could go to league one on loan.

Hope we can announce some new signings in the next couple of weeks.

I'm sure they will soon. With 4 foreign places to fill I think they will want to make progress on 1 of those sooner, then the other 3 next. With the Luke Brooke Smith and Tim Payne money to help I think they will try to get 4 real foreign leaders in the outfield, attack & midfield.

I'm not confident, nor do I think its possibly the best for the club long term, that they will take transfer earnings this off season and spend it all on the current squad. One of the main sources, the main?, has been cut to a quarter the past couple of seasons. These transfers only cover 1 season of funding cuts from the APL.

Assuming the LBS rumours are true and we have £400k / NZ$930k coming our way, would that money arrive in time to invest in the upcoming season's squad? Or are these fees more of a paper contract paid in instalments?

Edit: Realised after posting this what a good deal it would be for the Nix: they get one "pounds" and we get 400,000 in return.

That is true, about the TV payouts cut. The thing is though, only so many in the academy team are ready for the A League now. & so many from here and Aus have moved overseas for payrises. Limited now in the number of actual A League level players they can get. Really short on quality attack and midfield here and Aus off contract now.

You gotta love the off season just gotta shake your head at some of the assumptions being made.
Yes im fully aware they need to assemble a squad but we are 4 months from kick off so some of you really do need to cut them some slack. At least we have  a coach.
Would imagine they have been looking but until they got decisions from Rufer and Singh they couldnt nail down just what type of player they needed or what they had to spend. For me a real buggar it looks like we will lose both of the young players who were judged by some to be the next big things.
Personally i would be very surprised if Welnix will want to head into our 20th season by under funding the mens team. The rubbish some post about what they invest shows some just havnt taken the time to find out and prefer to post flat out lies.

Gap between academy and first team will naturally close this season. The league is set to be shorn of quality due to cap reduction (will be especially evident in lower quality of import) mixed with higher outflow of quality players due to WC year (Okon, Beach etc).

Think a few teams will be quite underwhelming on paper compared to what we’re used to.
