I cannot name a single season in our history where we didnt have at least two keepers who were at the level that AKH was at last season. If AKH is no longer at that level and therefore the frankly terrible McCarron is our second best keeper, then this is is the worst keeper depth we have ever had theprof
Remember when we had Sail as our #1 and his back up was some unknown, untried kid by the name of Paulsen? How did that turn out? For some clubs carrying two #1's isnt feasable, or is an easy way to save money, cos why would you pay someone starting money when they are gonna warm the bench all season. Better to have a younger keeper or two on academy wages who cna hang around the first team and learn and develop into hopefully the next Paulsen. Clearly this is the approach the Nix have taken, unlike say AFC with arguably two # 1's

re paulsen. come on, it was very clear to those who had seen him play before he debuted that he was next level. it was always a matter of time and many who had actually seen him play wondered why it didn't happen earlier.
re experienced backups. the a-league has provision for temporary contracts and smaller payments. not sure about spoonley, but mcpeake and imray were effectively loaned in on weekly payment contracts, which cost bugger all. i'm sure they were there to hope to further their careers as a priority and not to earn a living. there's always a way.
Sorry, I know these types of posts don't contribute anything worthwhile to pre match discussion but I'm in Nelson for work at the moment. Never been here before so does anyone know of any pubs down this way that would possibly be showing the game?

They dont have anything planned for today but normally go to McCashhin's. You would need to ring there as apparently they have reduced holiday hours.

Agreed. Off the top of my head I could think of 10 NZ based keepers ahead of McCarron in terms of ability, and certainly experience at mens level. From what I gathered last season he wasn't up to Central league level... but somehow the board, or whoever is calling the shots won't bring in someone else as immediate cover? Is it because they haven't come through the academy so there is no profit to be made?
I'm also struggling to understand why AKH isn't deemed as ready again yet seeing as he came back into the reserves from injury in mid October. Part of me wonders if this is chief throwing an 18 year old kid under the bus as an easy excuse to keep his job.

they probably can't outside of the transfer window.
Brisbane city was warm and muggy this morning but the rain finally arrived about lunchtime and broke the humidity. Now that I’m about halfway to Redcliffe where the stadium is it’s blue sky and dry heat, which is maybe slightly less brutal for the players?
Maybe Chiefy's gone with the whole - if you fall off the horse, you've gotta get straight back on, otherwise you never will - thing with McCarron, just gotta hope the horse doesn't buck him off even worse the 2nd time

there's no better time to bounce back that straight away i guess
Nice to check in on this thread and see our trademark pre-game positivity!
Good turnout of yellow shirts at the stadium bar, I count easily 20-plus which is more than I expected and they’re all in good spirits. So hopefully the doom-and-gloomers will hear us on TV whatever the result.
McCarron starting again is vintage Chiefy - more stubborn than even Ange Postecoglou. Will never let things like poor results or dwindling crowds affect his approach or philosophy or decisions. He knows what's up and it is everyone else/reality that needs to catch up with his vision.

glad you noticed that 3 out of 3 score predictions had us winning! that's as positive as ive ever seen.
have fun at the game! stand next to coochie and do the chicken dance or something so we know it's you
All the football apps have us lining up as a 4-5-1.
hmm, no doubt the pre match graphics will too.
my money is on it being that really clever trick we pull where we announce one formation and play another. it's really clever.
Yeah, I know not to rely on some of these apps to any great extent. I guess it kind of makes sense against this Brisbane side to get more players in the middle and sit a bit deeper given their direct play.
Hopefully the extra bodies allow us to break up and contest more individual battles with their players and we win more of the 2nd phase stuff. It's going to be tough in the heat and against the physicality, so I just hope we're up for it.
Will be interesting to see how Eze goes in a bit more of an isolated role up top.
