Payne & Kosta seem to be doing their best to NOT get selected for the World Cup.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I would have liked to see us drop another player into mid field to try to control the game. Almost from kick off it was clear our set up wasn’t working, which put a lot of pressure on defence and meant almost nothing created on attack.
Agree this 352 is not working- payne is leaving huge holes not been covered and hes not offering enough forward.

Ramall next week will lobe that space.

Need to move to 4 at the back and allow Armiento to donwjat he does best further forward.

Id drop Payne- if you looked at the game tonight and someone said we had 4 players off to a WC in our starting 11 youd tjink they were bat shark crazy.
we did play with a back 4 and Armiento as a winger.

They were last Derby not sure about this one given our performances and crowds if anything they should be a lot cheaper.

we played a lopsided 4231 and defended as a 442/4231

Hughes played as LB. Sheridan and Bill CBs. Payne at RB.

Second half
Sheridan- James- Tuiloma- Hughes
I think this is the line up to stick with for a bit. Payne could force his way back.

And I think we need more outlets and goalscorers than creative players. I’m not sure about where we need our ball winners…or if Rufer and Nagasawa need help. That pitch seemed large.

We need to know our defense combination and our main two or three attacking patterns. No more back 3/5.

Maybe it felt like a back 3 as Payne was playing like a wing back with very little tracking of his man- he basically left Fraser to Sheridan.  If it was a back 4 that makes his performance even worse as he neglected his defenosve duties

Was sitting in line with the backline last night, looked very much like a back 3 (even if it was meant to be a 4).  Payne nowhere to be seen, leaving Sheridan to defend fraser out wide and a space in the middle and far side for Kosta and Cancar.

Definitely think a back 4 of Sheridan-james-Bill-Hughes would work best, especially against a fast Auckland team with the likes of Randall, cosgrove, May etc. We shall see!

It was intentionally lopsided for Payne to provide width while attacking and Singh to play more centrally. It did leave a lot space for Fraser who didn't track Payne. Kraev and Kosta would drop deeper onto our midfield which left Fraser free of much defensive duties.

Was really good for Tuiloma to get redemption last night, scoring our first and essentially making our second, after he essentially gave away two goals the other week. All is forgiven and he can now go on and have a great Nix career over the next 2+ seasons

I think that will be Tuiloma at the Nix. Defensive frailties mixed with being a constant goal threat menace.

That was certainly his time in the MLS, and no doubt part of the reason he finished more a RB there than a CB.

So what are we going to do about KH in goal? You have to feel for the kid. That goal was about as bad as it gets for a keeper. Unfortunately thats the third goal in three games conceded by keeper errors.
I dont know what the situation is with Josh or what state McCarron is in but we really need someone more solid.
KH has lots of potential but maybe he needs to go back to the reserves and work on his game for a season

I have to think while not great it probably wasn't as bad as it seemed. There was no good camera angle to show it but it obviously moved a fair bit in the air, based on both his reaction and cancar's celebration.
Obviously still not a great one to concede and isn't at the level we know he can be at but I still think he's been more assured than McC

AKH needs to be dropped simply because he's had enough chances but failed to perform any better than a 18yr old 3rd choice. The goals conceded and the results showed that.  He's got potential but thats just pro football unfortunately.  But chiefy is partially accountable for that too.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360938421/wellington-phoenix-coach-faces-big-decision-ahead-new-zealand-derby

“It was a tackle and it was basically knee on knee and he (Singh) felt a bit of tenderness in the knee so we’ll see how it goes,” Italiano explained.

“Hopefully after a plane ride he has some rest and ices it up and he will be right for the derby.”

Italiano also has a major call to make in goal after a costly error from back-up goalkeeper Alby Kelly-Heald gifted the Wanderers a 2-0 halftime lead.

He must now decide whether to stick with Kelly-Heald – the third goalkeeper to start for the Phoenix this season – or rush import Josh Oluwayemi back from injury.

Oluwayemi was outstanding when the Phoenix last met Auckland at Go Media Stadium in December, saving two penalties and making several other stops in a 3-1 defeat with 10 men.

The English-Nigerian, however, has not played for eight weeks after suffering an ankle injury against the Central Coast Mariners.

so we are hopeful that Singh is ok and not expecting Josh to be rushed back?

So weird seeing two ex dons team mates on that team sheet.

Great that we seem to consistently be getting players in there, just wish it would translate to actual points 😬

It's because of the people not getting Team of the Week that we are not translating these to points

Forum starting to realise Payne is well short of his pre-injuries form. For mine, Elliot is a far better RB ATM.
Sheridan has obvious shortcomings. Both lose the ball too often. Time to return Loke to the squad? He'll put more pressure on them for a spot than they are putting on each other.
James should start. Error prone but so are many others. James at least is a footballer, with unusual skill vision and creativity for a CB. Tuiloma has looked dithery and vulnerable each game at times. But great power and distribution.
Well done the combined sledgehammer of Tuiloma, Piper and Eze. Brutal direct play saved a point. Piper lifted the team IMO.

Payne is still the likely best choice to play RB for the AWs at the WC. He's been by large a good, loyal servant for the Nix.

His poor form seems more a mental thing. Not happy with Chiefy's back 3/5 setup, and would rather be a RB than a RWB? Misses his mate Barba and their scoring combinations? Unsure when to haul arse and track back, and when not?

Whatever it is, he needs to seriously lift his game. Hopefully a big derby match is the moment to do it.

Payne bloody nearly scored at the start of the last game. What a tonic that would have given him.

Disagree, with respect (your posts are awesome!) I think it might be late-career decline, a la Nathan Burns. We'll see.

I wonder when Payne got his hammy injury (he seems to have a history of soft tissue strains)?

Had a niggly hammy the last few weeks?

It certainly seemed like he was hitting the turbo boost and finding it wasn’t quite working for whatever reason. I thought he might have been carrying something.
