Can we do the Melbourne double?

City play tonight, a couple red cards would be handy.

On top of that, do they have anyone needing one more yellow???  Do we have anyone on the yellow tipping point for the other games left??

Atkinson is on 6 yellows. You need 8 to get suspended now.

Rufer is on 7 for us.

Hopefully Atkinson may get two yellows...

Good thing about City winning is it puts the fate of our season in our own hands as opposed to hoping CCM drop points. We have to beat the two teams sitting above us to secure our spot, as well as not banana peel ourselves on a WSW like we've been so prone to do.

Of course Sydney, Vic, and Adelaide could have a collapse too, but we'd do better to secure it for ourselves.

A draw wouldn't be the end of the world. A loss would be our play off chances pretty much gone tho.

A draw with City is effectively the end for us. Due to our inferior (worse by 5) GD we would need to win our last 2 games and hope City get no more than 3 points from their last 2. Not very realistic. And even if that happened, we would again be in the position of needing CCM to drop points too.

It's amazing that despite being potential wooden spooners earlier in the season, with 3 games to go it's completely within our hands whether we make the 6 or not. Huge game this weekend. If we can beat Victory in Melbourne, we can take on City.

We also have to rely on other results though.

I will once again be making a donation to a Melbourne Charity to get good karma.

As multiple people have noted Procrastinixing, we don't have to rely on other results anymore. If we win all our remaining 3 games we will be in the top 6, as we are within 3 points of the teams in 6th and 7th and we play them both.

Not so sure about that given that our goal difference is 5 worse than 6th place we really need other teams to still help us.

Oh for sure if we wanna be safe. But since 6th (City) are only two points ahead of us, all we have to do, which is putting it lightly to be fair, is win our last 3 and we're guaranteed the final spot.

I'm curious about whats gonna happen further up the table. Truth is they're not safe. Sydney have been on a torrid string of games, and they could easily slip. Only takes a draw and a loss for them.

and if MacArthur, City and CCM win all their games MB: 37, MC: 38, CCM: 37

Scary to think we have to win EVERY game from now on though. I guess that's how you want all seasons to go but man that's gonna make watching the nix extremely stressful for the next few weeks lol

We only have to win every game to guarantee our spot though right?

If we drop points we can still make it.

Does Payne come back in if fit? Sheridan was solid in the last game... still appears a little gun shy to attack, but did his job on D well. Payne has been poor this year, but easily had his best game for the past 2 years IMO against Chile, so is he finding form again?

Other than that, I don't see any changes. I'm not a fan a Najarine, but he had his best game as well so probably keeps his spot.

Whoever plays at RB isn't such a worry for me but Edwards at LB is really going to have his work cut out keeping Arzani and Atkinson at bay. They carved up the Mariners big time the other night, especially in the first half. He will need some strong support from our mids.

I believe Payne's performance against Chile was part of the overall improved performance of the AW team vs the dross they dished out against Finland. Like everyone else in the squad, Payne was playing to get on a plane to the WC.

You could consider playing LKH and Armiento together.  But this is not what Greeny seems to be doing, so it may just be Edwards.

Armiento is a very strange decision by the new coach.

Apart from Eze and perhaps Rufer, I’m wondering if any other Nix player would be as desirable for another A league club or even further afield.

While we are winning every one is happy but the end result may be not making the finals.

Auckland will rise once more

Armiento is a Left Winger that we tried to convert to a LWB. He doesn't fit the 4-2-2-2 that Greenacre is setting us up in to start. Subbing him on requires a formation change.

Edwards will start. It shouldn't be a surprise that our defense has looked much better now we are playing a more established LB. He doesn't provide the same go forward atm, it is an area he needs to make the step up to the ALM level on.

Ha! let me rephrase, if we drop points in any of the last 3 games then we need other results to go our way.

While it might seem strange, we have won the three matches that Armiento has not started while we were winless in the previous seven that he started.
So your final sentence seems a little disingenuous if it is suggesting some causal relationship between not starting Armiento and missing out on the finals.
Btw, I like Armiento and have also been surprised. But thems the facts.

I know, I know, its serious!

Was not a fan of Armiento at the start of the season... but warmed up to him a little as the season progresses.

Thought he played for himself too much too often.

As a goal scorer I liked that. Last season no one took responsibility for taking a shot. If you have a goal scoring player being a little greedy and your game plan is working you can forgive a lot.

Armiento has a unique profile, he's got a really good set piece delivery on him, cross and shot, he's too slow to really be a touchline winger, he's not great in tight spaces, not comfortable defensively. So its hard to find his best position, I think LWB was probably his best suited position even though I would've liked him to be able to beat his man with pace or dribbling more often.

If he worked on his defensive game, LB could end up being where he'd excel at. Crossing from deep, inverting for long shots at the edge of the box, having that extra man ahead of him so he can make overlapping runs to then cross instead of trying to beat the man himself.

I agree that Armiento is not particularly fast but speed alone is not a prerequisite, otherwise we would be playing Mileusnic every week.

He is an excellent forward player but as I said many times he is not a natural defender which limits his utility.  Showed real class early on in the season but I am puzzled why he was not as prominent later on, under Italiano, who signed him up in the first place.

Armiento does not fit a "two-upfront" line of Greenacre, where Eze and Piper seem to do well, but he is still a very useful option for us if Greenie decides to mix it up a bit.   If Greenie continues as a full-time coach next season, then I imagine Armiento will move on to Brisbane or Adelaide, clubs where he had past career and which could use his talent.

Tbf, chiefy stopped the high line by the time jets visited in December. Given how his tenure ended, I wouldn't have minded if he had stuck to his guns and kept the high line

That is a fair call, but in fairness to myself, a lot of the early part of the season (Australia Cup included) and everything in the lead up to Chiefy's resignation had just sort of blurred together as a mix of disillusionment, with an underlying tone of resentment.
