Stubbornly playing negative passive football with 5 at the back, LKH and Sheridan in midfield (no disrespect to both), against a team below us and let them have 30 shots.

Sorry I said I wanted Chiefy out, this guy is delusional and super stubborn.  I can't live with another year of this type of football.

Will forever support the Nix, its getting to a point that, supporting Nix but watching AKL FC is a better approach for my mental wellbeing.....

Chiefy actually said there would be a "different playing style" next season in the post-match press conference

"There'll be changes, I think significant changes, you know looking to reinforce the squad, there'll be a different sort of playing style and ideas, but that's going to eventuate over the next couple of months."

Let's bloody hope so Chiefy, for all our sakes.

i wonder what this new playing style is?

and whether tonight was any indication of it?

if not, what's stopping the transition to it from happening already?

are these just words? they've been said before.

obviously it needs to happen. im relieved cheif has acknowledged this. i was a little worried he would stubbonly stick to plan A

Thought Erik P on the microphone was very adept at describing the issues. Used the stats well and clearly knows his stuff.

Sheridan and LKH are miles off A League quality for different reasons. Im sure they are fantastic guys who train the house down and listen to instructions but i doubt either would boss the national league.

Body language told me Rufer amd Payne didnt want to be there. They need to he careful as playing poorly like they did today isnt going to help their all whites chances.

I think a missing piece is am assistant coach who can talk some sense into chiefy. Is Adam Griffith just looking at what we do without the ball (he has done well)?

Massive, massive recruitment effort needed and a more effective playing style required.

I suggest Yellow Fever leave a clear message at our last home game about the utter crap on every level this team, coach and club have dished up this season.

I think this was the worst season in the clubs history on many levels

The coach is aiming to win the final 2 games,  gee where is my Tui!!!!!!

What a garbage day of football for me, Nix sink to a new low and look pathetic doing so, Auckland are crowned champions, and my local team gets relegated from the Championship 🙃
Annual finals disappointment enthusiast.

yes massive recruitment required. But who is going to want to come here and play chief ball.
The players this season look like they have had there love of the game drained away.

Our midfield really struggled on that bog last night. Rufer was poor. LKH couldn't get the stuck ball our from under his feet. Credit to Kosta coming back to help out. LBS made a really good impact. Piper tried hard all game to make a difference. Pretty terrible watch till the subs came on.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Guess we are not avoiding Darwin then?
A little dissappointed that Italiano didnt take the chance to try something instead of rolling out the same dross he has all season. Had two games after his extension to show what he could do or at least somehting of a new plan - but no!
Perth comes to us on Friday so Im really hoping he gives us something to look forward to.

this has to change for next season.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360660865/wellington-phoenix-give-30-shots-lose-wooden-spoon-contenders
I dont care if we score pretty goals or not but we have to increase our shots taken and reduce those allowed.

I hade the impression you’re not much of a xStats guy?

Im a massive numbers guy, just not numbers with no context or story to suport them.
30 shots to brisbane 9 on target score 1. tells a story of wastefulness with posession.
our 6 shots 2 on target nothing scored, says we didnbt create nearly enough chances.

Last season we managed to create meaningful chances and scored from them, resulting in games with low shots, but high conversion rate, this year we've created less and converted less, and also conceeded more - hence our position in the table. It was mentioned in the commentary, somethging about Kosta having 20 shots at goal and scoring 10 (50% conversion rate).

(see how stats with context create meaning)

We already did a massive recruitment.

So what's the strategy, do another massive off-season recruitment and serve up the same rubbish style of football, only to do a massive recruitment the following season?

Maybe it's not actually the players that are entirely at fault for the rubbish football we've had to endure this season.

Said that we'd more attacking this season btw

Can we stop playing 7 defenders, 3 or 4 of which aren't even A-League level

Sorry, but Piper and Sheridan should not be starting as many games as they have

So Brisbane had 30 shots but still only scored one goal.

So Brisbane had 30 shots but still only scored one goal.

At least they had 30 shots.

When was the last time we even got close to that number of shots?

Most games I've watched this season, the opposition team has had over 20 shots. Yet Chief keeps repeating that they are 'non-threatening' shots from 'outside the box'.

Yet we are still losing and conceding all the time to these 'non-threatening' shots.

It's not rocket science, if you let the other team have 30 shots every match, by pure statistics and the law of averages, you're going to concede a lot of goals over the course of the season.

for the xg nerds, Brisbane's 30 shots resulted in xg of 1.83 and our 6 shots 0.44 - big chances was 2 to 1

It's pretty dreadful, but Brisbane still over 4x as likely to score versus us based on the 'stats'.

Think this basically proves my point above. They can be 'non-threatening' shots, but at the end of the day if you let the other team shoot 30 times, you'll probably lose most matches.

I’m 99% sure he said this exact thing before this season…

"It will be hosted in Wellington. My balls my word"

"McGlinchey is ours ! My balls my word."

He did and promised more flowing attacking football. Problem was he was buildng all this around a broken player and the back up options werent up to the standard.

and other established attacking players were also borked. We had Chico, Rojas and Cola all on our books but injured.

Chico was a late inclsion and until injured was looking ok.
Cola never looked like being anywhere near what we needed. Nor was Retre.

Next season will show if he’s the real deal or just talk. Two seasons to build and re-build should be enough.

Cola never had a preseason, but still would have been nice added depth

Ishige was never good enough, Nagasawa showed bits and pieces but never really put it all together, Retre was exactly what he was at previous clubs - an OK A-League player who has  good games then shark ones in equal measure

OK A-league players who are dependable squaddies in good teams (like Retre in his previous clubs) rarely work out as key pivotal players in average teams (like Retre at the Nix).
Retre is not a particularly creative player for a defensive mid, but he performed consistently well at Sydney FC when surrounded by creative players.
I think the answer lies somewhere in between: our creative players like Nagasawa are not physical enough in this league, while our physically adequate players like Retre are not creative enough.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days
