AucklandPhoenix
I don’t think many will take positives from that attendance especially as they gave away 1500 free tickets. Without that it may have been less then 3k, which would be the lowest in the history of the club.

I’ll say those words again   “the lowest in the history of the club”

The saving grace is that there is only one more game in Wellington and the crowd will hopefully be more than 3k to see Rufer off.

However using that as a marketing tool may be difficult.

Getting more than 3k to see the women play, is more likely.
I just realised its the last game in Wellington for the men.
That could be a blessed relief tbh.

I wouldn't underestimate the impact of the current economic enviroment. Wellington has basically been in recession for three years and consumer confidence is well below historical levels and there is more pessimism than optimism (score below 100). Meaning people are holding onto their money and the first thing to go is discretionary spending.

While it wouldn’t go down well with fans and hindsight is a wonderful thing in reality if they had taken their second derby game to Hamilton, they likely would have got 20k as opposed to 10k.

I don’t think next season AFC need to take the derby there but would be good for them to take one of their regular season games especially at this time of the year as university kicks off.

Auckland will rise once more

The Hurricanes got a pretty healthy crowd a few weeks ago, as did the cricket in the basin.. Wellington has had a number of events including Ed Sheeran which attracted a full capacity audience.. 10,000 or so went to the derby, so it’s not like there is no cash going around, perhaps it’s tighter and people chose what they spend their money on, and watching a pretty poor Phoenix team is not high on peoples list..

I think a home darby game in each city and then a neutral in Dunedin (my preferance) would have gone down a treat for all parties and raked in a solid crowd if not sold it out

Yeah for sure. Sport is tricky though. You don't know what you are going to see. At least with concerts and movies and the zoo etc you have a fair idea of whether it's going to be good. And if you are already paying for Sky, then it can be easier to just stay at home.

Auckland's turn to host 2 derby games next season, and just maybe they take one to Te Kaha in ChCh. You look at those above graphs, and the Mainland is currently NZ's power economic region.

That's presuming that it remains an uneven ALM draw (so 3 derbies) as Western United and Canberra both don't enter next season, creating the holy grail even draw (26 game H&A season).

Be interesting to see the size of the Addington crowd, Nix verus WSW on 18th April. Anything near 8-10K will be a good result given the Nix's season will likely already be over.

Problem is its not like the australian State of Origin where there is really a neutral location to have the game. Christchurch is much closer to Wellington and is loosely Nix territory, and Hamilton is way closer to Wellington and clearly Knights territory. Anywhere truly in a middle zone is too small to host a game of that magnitude.

So I would keep with a rotation of 2 home, 1 away, alternating by season. Ultimately once the league expands enough, it should be 1 home and 1 away. If WU comes back (or SM replace them) and we get a Canberra team we're probably looking at a 26 game H&A season.

By the way never posted that to in any way suggest i was happy with the attendance figures. I just found it interesting two cities in Australia with much larger populations wernt attracting more people. Especially when one was a local derby of sorts.
Also back up what 2ndbest said im not sure some understand how badly some in the Wellington region have been affected by closures and layoffs in the last couple of years.

The good news is that closures have slowed...

Mainly cuz there's nothing left to shut!

So Dale, any chance I’d be allowed to make YF the beneficiary of some fundraising on GiveaLittle to send a gift (bag of gummy dicks or some such) to the VAR and also to fund referee training in Wellington which might help understand the decisions they are making….? I sent a couple of emails. All in good fun.

Please, iron is hot while the pods are discussing it…!

Based on some feedback from irregulars i've spoken to, maybe $36 parking, no trains, $14 small beer, $13 for uncooked wiener left for seagulls,  and passing it back to centre half all day is just not drawing them in...

Sorry for slightly going off topic. Has it ever happened or at least more than I've seen for a ref to go look at the VAR screen but stick with his orginal decision?

the more I watch this clip, the more annoyed I get that VAR got involved and that the ref didnt have the guts to stick to his original/correct decision.

Alireza Faghani does it all the time.

A good ref stands by his calls unless they are blatantly wrong eg booked the wrong player. Capitulating just says you are weak and do not back yourself.

Scap VAR. At least in the A League.

The Nix must have one of the worst VAR outcomes of any football team world wide.

Aussies just can't be trusted in that box or looking at the on field screen.
