Round 1 the Wahinix have a bye

I remember when I was playing having a bye in round 1 one year, at the start of the season it felt like every team was a little more onto it and we were just a little bit behind.  Hopefully we have a good warm up scheduled for that bye weekend.

Ok they've provided more info now it's the Nix Women's Under 17 team vs Auckland's development centre Under 17 team.

And they've added an earlier fixture tomorrow night to make it a 2 game series.

With this extra info now being available I realise I have put these posts in the wrong thread - sorry

Not wanting to derail the thread but I'm surprised the Phoenix haven't publicised this, not even in this week's Academy Roundup. Maybe it's more of a training camp type thing, but "bring your crew and your colours" suggests it's intended to be a public game.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/09/12/auckland-fc-and-phoenix-u-17-womens-teams-to-meet-in-two-match-series/

Two games between A-League clubs Auckland FC and the Wellington Phoenix will showcase some of the country’s best emerging talent for U-17 women.

The clubs will meet twice over the weekend of September 12-14, 2025, in Auckland, to help the development of their U-17 players.

The matches, the first played by Auckland FC’s Women’s Football Talent Development Centre, are designed to support and prepare players for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The first game is a floodlight match on Friday at Olympic Park, New Lynn, with the second in the series planned for Fred Taylor Park, Whenuapai.

Entry is free for spectators.

So our losing streak continues  Sigh.

From Bev's interview today:
Heading to Sydney for a preseason tour in October and will play two A-League fixtures there, one of them could be open so firming up them details but we've got some boys fixtures and things as we go. We'll end up with about six seven games before the season kicks off.

Hmm, wonder if they're planning a men's fit version of the keeper's shirt?

Former New Zealand captain Chris Zoricich has left his role as head coach at Australian club Cooks Hill United after being linked with a move to Brisbane.

He has been replaced by another coach from New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay’s Jamie Dunning, who will combine roles at United and at the Newcastle Jets, where he has recently been named as assistant coach of their women’s A-League squad.

Zoricich (56), who earned 58 caps for New Zealand over a 15-year period, left Northern League club Western Springs, where he was head of men’s football, to join Cooks Hill in 2023.

Dunning will work with the Jets’ new women’s head coach, Stephen Hoyle, who previously worked for Central Football and played for Napier City Rovers.

CCM are reigning ALW champs so likely still pretty decent, even if some players and their coach (now a Matildas assistant have left?).

Sounds like the Wahinix are on a little pre season tour in Oz.

Grim is an understatement… The A$30k (NZ$35k) average salary they quote is about 20% less than players would get working full time at minimum wage, so no wonder so many are struggling and stressed.

The other depressing number is the 26% drop in average crowd size from 23/24 to 24/25 - without ticket sales and the sponsorship money they attract, how are clubs ever going to pay players what they need to be able to focus on football as a profession?

Yet the Matildas continue to draw big crowds, often selling out stadiums when they play in Australia.

At the risk of starting a gender war, this recent clip went viral. Watch it from the start to about 1:45mins in. The point made is that if you're horrified by wages get out and watch the games.

You will never get equality if u dont give equal opportunity and investment. Not all of the Aleague womens games are even available to watch on tv. How can u get the same ratings if u cant even watch them? Many Aleague womens games are played in suburbia and difficult to get to, so crowds will be snaller. Women have to act pro but have 2nd or 3rd jobs to pay the bills, so how can u expect to get an equal product?
In America a bar opened that only showed womens sport. Everyone said it would fail. Today they are franchising 'the sports bra'.
Build it and they will come. Invest in womens sport and it will grow.
