Huge huge game and all counts.
Getting to the WC would be immense of course....heaps more publicity for the code in NZ. But the real biggy is the $$$$. $8 to $10 million for qualifying. Ok some goes to the players. But the bulk of that money would go to NZF.
As the CEO of NZ football said...it would set NZ football up for the next decade at least. They would have the money for all the promotions and training etc. It would take football in NZ to a new level.
Bahrain football is loaded...we need this win despirately...not only to make the WC but for the future of football in NZ

So so so so excited for this game! Only 5 sleeps!

Saw Simon Elliot at the gym, he's looking pretty fit... Although he was rowing and biking he definitely wasn't having any trouble with his leg.

COME ON YOU ALL WHITES!

Might be plucking here, but I have heard a rumour of Si having an abdominal injury which may rule him out.
Could be wrong, but good source.

Wouldn't stop him riding the bike, although rowing would be difficult

My dad would rather watch a Phoenix game than this WC qualifier. How sad is that?

Hmm, from what I saw he looked in decent shape. Had a british sounding coach with him. Definitely didn't look to be struggling with the rowing though so hopefully he's all good

Anyone know what hotel the Bahrain team staying in thursday and friday night. Could get the brazilian drums going as a way of showing our multicutral welcome. They should be well rested with their gulf stream arriving thursday mid afternoon.

On that note - does anyone know when/on which flight the Bahrainis will arrive into Wellington?

I will be arriving there on Thursday too and it would be cool to say hi to the team :)

We cant control them. We can control us. A mastery focus has been shown to have more success than an outcome focus. It comes down to this control, and without it = stress. So lets focus on what we can contol and empower ourselves.

so, Convilla why would you want to take attention from the players?

They will have done all the hardwork to get us there. The pitch is their territory and the glory is theirs.

They will come to the fans. You or any other fan do not need to make yourself the centre of attention - that right will have been earnt by the players.

FIFA has a "follow your team" option for WC 2010 tickets. How many have put their money on the line already for the AW games in South Africa?

How exactly is psychology not a science?

sci?ence

Article from Stan Lazaridis on the game

All Whites on verge of history
Stan Lazaridis

November 07, 2009 06:30pm

FOUR years after John Aloisi ended Australia's 32-year World Cup drought, New Zealand stands on the brink of its own piece of history.

Having made their only appearance in 1982, the All Whites host Bahrain this Saturday in Wellington in the return leg of the teams' World Cup playoff.

After a scoreless draw in Bahrain last month, NZ needs a win to make it to South Africa. A scoring draw would send Bahrain through on the away goals rule, while another 0-0 draw after regular and extra time would see the All Whites needing to win a penalty shootout just like the Socceroos.

NZ has been big winners from Australia's move from the Oceania Confederation into Asia. After winning the Oceania group stage, the Kiwis earned a playoff with the fifth-placed Asian team, Bahrain, for a spot in the World Cup.

The All Whites were doubly lucky, because not only did Australia's departure make things easier, but Oceania's playoff path now goes through Asia rather than South America, meaning the Kiwis avoided a showdown with Uruguay.

Should NZ qualify, plenty of questions will be asked over whether it deserves to be there given the strong European teams that have failed to make it through that continent's cutthroat group stage.

European powers the Czech Republic, Turkey and Croatia have missed out and 2006 runner-up France, Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal and Guus Hiddink's Russia still have to navigate their own two-leg playoffs to get through.

But if NZ gets to the World Cup, it deserves to be there and I'll be happy if it happens. FIFA has to create a qualifying path for every nation.

It's not NZ's fault that it has been presented this opportunity to qualify through an Asian playoff.

There are so many strong teams in Europe and only 13 of the 32 spots go to European nations because FIFA wants the World Cup to include countries from around the world.

These European countries know their fate from before the start of qualifying.

Credit must also be given to the A-League for allowing Wellington Phoenix to be part of the competition.

About half of the Kiwi national team plays for the Phoenix, so the A-League has helped New Zealand become stronger.

Some in Asia have seen this as Australia helping a country from a rival confederation, but at the end of the day Australia also has to worry about its own league.

The World Game dudes are talking about taking the drum kit out to the Bahrain Hotel at 1am tonight, wonder if the NZ boys here will kick in funds (more like a keg of beer) for the oz boys to do this?
