Hogg seems to be the logical replacement but i won t be surprised if bertos plays rb and brokie lb with hopefully durante reid and smith as the 3 cb and vicelich and mcglinchey as CM. Upfront a lot of choices but rojas, wood and smeltz would be the more in form players

''We got a fax from Fifa, but we've gone back to them, because we wanted to get a bit more clarification around what they put in their fax,'' de Jong said.

''Basically it said 'yeah, based on the information you've given us, it looks OK'. So we've gone back to them, just asking for something a little more definitive.

"We're hoping to get that in the next couple of days.

"We don't want to take any risks, we just want to make sure that we're on very safe ground.''

I can't believe FIFA would send a fax like that - that's rubbish. I'm sure we asked for an official clearance, we didn't ask "do you think it's OK if we play him??" - because what would happen if they change their mind at a later stage???
agree, that is lame from fifa

Anyone think we're in a bit of a strange spot going into this one?

No idea of our starting lineup, or our formation, or our captain.  We should be building for the big intercontinental match but I don't feel like there has been any real progress at all in our qualifying campaign.  Some of our attacking guys are in really good form which is great, and we should have far too much for both sides, but it still feels like we're shoehorning guys in out of position and 3 vs 4 at the back is still a long way from being settled.  Interesting to see what we can produce

Need a replacement for Vicelich also. RB & DM are the two biggest holes going forward.

In some respects, having A League guys appointed is not the best for the following reason.

How may guys do we have on yellow cards that in jeopardy of missing the next game? That next game could be a crucial one. At least the Island guys will give out dumb cards to our guys who want them and thus miss the Honiara leg which would be a dead rubber. Streb wont fall for that meaning any of our guys get cards in Honiara or the 1st leg, then they are missing a crucial playoff game.

Can't say this is the best outcome for us in light of the above.

Meh. I'd much prefer Strebre than any of the Island refs. The awful way that the OFC refs have been reffing the matches has not helped us at all (phantom offsides, blatant fouls against us not being called, and generally losing control of the match ).

Strebre is good news.

And besides, if those players want yellow cards, why don't they just commit yellow card offences, rather than hoping for soft yellow?

exactly - plus he'll probably allow a similar physicality to the A-League

Easiest yellow card for me is shirt tugging or kicking ball away

Surely you are taking the piss here Jeff? or has someone hacked your account? You would prefer we had some muppet like reffed the last game in Christchurch.
As an aside, heard somewhere or read somewhere, FIFA will not take kindly to players getting stupid yellow cards to ensure they are suspended for the Honiara game.

Which Strebre will have no choice but to give, thankfully. It also means that players not on a yellow already are less likely to be put on a tight-rope by a dodgy refereeing decision against them. Strebe traditionally doesn't give out too many yellows, so it's unlikely that we will get more players put on yellow card warnings.

Who do we have on the verge of suspension? If we win in Dunedin, we can rest those who are close in Honiara. Also I would hope in a meaningless game, the players could go 90 mins without making a daft challenge.

I know it sounds crazy. I even can't believe I wrote it considering how poor they have been but follow the logic.

Streb is obvious an experienced controlled referee. He will probably be well aware of the set up of NZs situation and perhaps a win and a couple of yellows so some players card count is cleared. As you have just said, FIFA will not take too kindly to it so do you think Streb is going to dish out needless yellow cards? You can bet an Island referee will....
As daft as it sounds, the A League ref is more likely to keep his cards in his pocket than the Island guy is purely because there is an obvious difference in standard. In the situation where we do not players getting yellow cards in the next game in Honiara or in the 1st playoff leg, when is the best time to clear them? On this one. With an experienced referee, that's less likely to happen. Now had he been appointed to the game in Honiara then I would be rejoicing because with the conditions against us, we don't want the referees against us too.
Besides, I don't think anyone actually gives New Cal a shot at winning this game. Its not like the conditions are against us this time so....

On another note - these New Caledonia guys should definitely be underestimated. Their fans are really behind them and this match is huge for them-  they can still qualify if they win here.

So I expect it to be a lot tighter than many think - at least for the early parts of the game

I also hasten to add, if we get an island referee in Honiara and he goes mental, that puts us back in the same place as we are now. Players in the 1st leg of the playoff game on a yellow and having to 2nd guess because a 2nd yellow put them out for the 2nd leg.

Overall I agree he is a far better choice than the Island referees and we will see a much better spectacle of control and rationale refereeing but in light of players on cards, thats the negative.
