What about Wellington is wonderful? Surely that would be popular?

Good pre-match crowd in the pub.  Pity (most of) the staff there were so miserable.  Good to meet some of the locals and our Canadian supporter too.

Great match crowd numbers I thought.  Bit of angst in the Zone at the start.  One guy rocks in and says "You guys need to move these are my seats and there's 21 of us".  There were actually only 3 and they moved at half time.  Chanting was an epic fail.  Turns out the Cantabs like to clap.  Amusingly they also didn't really get the shirts off thing either.

Game was scary, in the "oh god we really need to score another" kinda way.

After match, the only place open was the casino.  Didn't put any money anywhere the gambling part but drank a wee bit.

Recommendation - Don't book an 8.10am flight home the morning after a game.

Hmm a bit condescening, alot of cantabs in the zone are veterans of SA, Bahrain game, Jaimaica in aucks, and loads of nix and All Whites games in wellington and as such are not virgins to enjoying football, I think the general feeling was that the performance was just so poor the atmosphere died out a bit and didnt really warrant shirts off. I would still say that the atmosphere was as good as anything I’ve seen for the All Whites since Bahrain and after match celebrations in SA.

P.S. No idea why ticketek dont make it more clear that the WNZ is stading and shouting only, always dramas with people trying to stay seated etc. General admision would be the solution surely.

I couldn't agree more with this bit. I accidently ended up in the front row (should've bought my tickets in person rather than online) and everybody in the 2 rows behind me was sitting and I was surrounded by children. I was about the only one getting in with the chants except for one girl just behind me.
Don't forget I <3 Nix this is the first All Whites match we've had in 6 long years and a lot of the people who turned up last night haven't been to any of our home away from home Nix matches. People will learn in time.

Always had a feeling the white noie zone would be screwed up. Worked out well in the end although it was only the simple chants that were really getting going.

Given the frequency of AW matches in NZ (i.e. not very) and how they will be shared around the country, it will probably be quite a long time before people become white noiserites (or whatever you want to call them).
Really should be some agreement with ticketing agency and venue security about special fan zones (S&S zone, family zone - no rude words, GA - sit and clap, Corporate - sit and eat prawn sandwiches, Chav zone).

Okay we will fill your pub up  by publicising it for weeks before the game ( I'm sure it's always that packed on a Tuesday, yeah right ) and we do more than just gargle a few lagers , so  maybe just maybe a little  hint that it was a football night wouldn't have gone  amiss  ie no under 14 schools rugby on the tv screens all fekin night .
Call me a creative  genius but how about showing All Whites highlights from the last WC  or is that a too  left field there. At least they  could have  put some decent music on ,I reckon they played the same chill out dirge track the whole evening   only occasionally changing the volume !!
Lucky it was the only pub open on a Tuesday night in Christchurch or I would have taken my throat and my hard earned  doubloons somewhere else!

Quite a distinct possibility.
If so, they will prove one tough opponent based on what I saw of their Olympic side - one of the better ones at London 2012. Beat Spain and pipped by Brazil in an exciting 3-2 quarterfinal loss. Same coach as their senior side and several excellent players.
I'd be worried after the way the AW's have been playing recently - Honduras are considerably stronger than us, and a step up from Bahrain last time round.
Ignore the AW's win over Honduras earlier in the year - it means little as they were resting key players and trying out fringies...

Tough crowd huh?  I liked the idea of being in a pub full of footballers and meeting up with all my mates and then walking up to the game. I got friendly service when I bought my $50 round and couldn't give a toss about what was on the telly.  Horses for courses I guess.

I'd say whoever finishes fourth there will be a better side than Bahrain and an altogether tougher prospect. And Bahrain was certainly not easy.

And in many ways more difficult just simply from the fact we will not "fly under the radar" quite as easily . We are much more of a known quantity than we were four years ago

Yep, agree with that too. No-one will ever underestimate us again.

The other difficulty we will have is making sure we play enough games next year to keep the guys playing together. In 2009 we had the Confederations Cup plus friendlies around that, and another friendly with Jordan, altogether 8-9 games in a few months prior to the game with Bahrain. At the moment we have 2 World Cup qualifiers in March and a big gap which we'll need to fill with some friendlies, and finding decent opposition will be tricky with qualifying still going on in other regions. And this time around we'll only be facing a 4 day turnaround between the two play-off games, rather than the month last time around. So it looks to be a much tougher proposition on multiple fronts.

WTF, more people watch the post game coverage than the actual match coverage

http://www.throng.co.nz/2012/10/tv-ratings-16-october-2012/

Most watched on SKY Sport 3

  1. Intl Soccer Post Game: 45,480 (9:30pm – 9:50pm)
  2. Intl Soccer: 28,560 (7:45pm – 9:30pm)

For all the complaints that football is not looked after by Sky, we have an competitive international live on TV, in a great time zone, with our strongest team available, and we get less than 30,000 viewers.  On the Tuesday a week earlier, Counties vs Tasman rugby game got 42,000 viewers.

there has been so much angst at Sky over the years, with complaints that live football gets bumped off for highlights of schools rugby, but the bottom line is that ratings are king and if there are not enough watching football (and more watching other events) then that is what will take priority.

Back from match..albeit via Hanmer Springs for 2 nites.  Lovely to wake up to it snowing this morning.  Anyway..surprised that I cant see any comment about the state of the pitch which apparently contributed to the need to hoof it long and negated Kosta and Marcos usual style.,  Two good articles on it in the Press post match.  I concur with the ref angst and antics of some Tahitian players..they had some talent tho I though and at times outpassed us...despite the "sticky" pitch.

Stomping on the floor of the temp stands created racket..good sized crowd I thought.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Permalink Permalink

I agree I thought the stamping on the stands worked well too, it surprised me a little how well some of those entrenched rugby fan things worked. Canterbury had played a ITM Cup match 2 days before, and another game there on Saturday which would explain the 'sticky' felling the pitch gave. Ground staff probably kept the grass longer and there would have been scuff marks everywhere from the rucks.

OK.  Sky may well use these figures to justify there's bugger all football fans watching. Such self-serving statistics are hardly surprising when you consider Sky is heavily slanted towards rugby fans then maybe golfers and some other sports before local football.Look at the marketing, programmes, rugby's own dedicated channel and associated activities advertised on SKY all revolving around  the rugby at all levels. Is it any wonder? How much marketing (other than locally for the game) was done to let fans know about the football broadcast in comparison?
If it had been free-to-air, what audience might have seen it then ?
Of the total Sky audience that night, what was the breakdown at that time across all channels- in fact, of the total Sky subscribers what percentage of them are actually football fans??
If there are only 40,000 football fans who are Sky subscribers then that would in fact be an excellent stat. It all depends on what the numbers actually represent and how you use them, surely?

I am a cocky, but I also run lambs. We are twice a day until March when we go to 16 hourly.

Back to the topic at hand, I could be wrong but I thought the Rugby Channel was actually independently owned (like SoHo and Rialto). I'm sure if someone had the funds and the drive they could put the idea of a Football Channel to Sky. I do find it incredibly hard to believe that only 28,560 people watch the live broadcast given the interest that I personally saw from people (although that may have been due to the locality of the match). Also I'm almost certain that if it had been followed up on Prime or TV One the numbers would have gone up significantly. It would be interesting to know how many people watched the replay either the next day, today or the highlights on 33.
