Sounds like a chance Nelsen may be available. Played for Blackburn reserves today prior to his tsfr to Spurs

Would like to see Hogg get a run, but i don't think Herbert rates him so can't see it happening.

He will need to impress for the under 23's before he gets a look in.

I'd like to see the following line up...

                                    Gleeson
                           Reid   Nelsen   Smith

Brockie               Keat                 Brown             Lochead

                                      Mc G

                               Wood Smeltz

I don't expect Gleeson or Keat to start realistically though.

Rojas off the bench - hasn't got a huge amount of game time lately and the same with Kosta who hasn't played for a few months. Killen to stay in China and sort out his contract for next year.

What position would you play Rojas in in that formation? Or would change the formation when he comes on? I just don't see him working as a wide midfielder when you have 3 at the back.

Siggy's recent form makes him difficult to leave out, could play at RB.

As I said in an earlier post, we need to think about developing a holding midfielder. Vicelich did a great job at the WC, and Elliott is capable of it too but those guys are no spring chickens. Aside from those two there are no obvious options. I was thinking Keat, but I've never seen him play. Another option could be Reid, because we have a lot of CB options coming through and he's technically sound and got a take-no-prisoners attitude which could work in that role.

Reid would pick up too many cards playing in that role.

I agree we need another DM - but surely Brown can do this or should be adaptable enough to do it.

Keat is more of a box to box midfielder, but has been described as a Brown / Elliott mix so could be the solution.

Question is though, has Herbert actually seen him play at all? Has he been given footage of him for example.

Henderson has not kicked a ball in anger for basically two years, no chance he'll get picked.

Big outside chance is Bevin in my opinion, doing really well in the states and similarly strong in the NZFC (although not sure on how he's doing further up north whilst back here over the break.)

I agree that Brown should be able to adapt to it, but I don't think he actually would. His natural tendency to drift forward in search of goals, combined with just fading out of games, would stop him being effective IMHO. Reid's discipline issues might settle down as he gets a bit older and more experienced, but even if they don't, I would say that have a DM who picks up cards disrupting play and niggling the opposition's attacking players is part of the job description. Maybe Keat should be given a run at least, just to see how he goes because most of our midfielders are naturally more attacking, and surely he deserves a run soon

Also, I recall Jez Christie doing an alright job in midfield just prior to the WC after Brown was injured. Played the whole match vs Serbia I think.

Smith the American,

Or Jarrod Smith, the NZ Attacking Mid with more personal injuries than an A&E ward?

What about the boy who has gone back to Holland, played for Manawatu? Can't remember his nam for the life of me?

this will be a very interesting selection

now that the world cup is well in the past, this selection needs to be forward focused, so will (did he walk out, or did he have permission to leave) elliott and vicelich be retained? both should still be considered good enough based on elliott's big season in the MLS as captain of chivas and vicelich retaining his quality and reading of the game.

but are they still of use? perhaps so considering nelsen's liekly absence from international duty in between the big tournys

and what formation? 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 is working well at the phoenix. there are enough variations in there to deal with most tactical situations. will ricki move the all whites forward with this formation?

i always felt that 3-4-3 was a one-off, will be interesting to see if it's retained.

what do you guys reckon?reg222012-02-06 18:53:46

I reckon I wanna see some young blood in this game. One of Elliot/Vicelich would be useful for leadership, I wouldn't cut both, but priceless opportunity for new blood so maybe bench one. Reid + Siggy as centrebacks if Nelsen doesn't make it.
Other than that, I rank Kosta over Rojas though I know they're not interchangeable. If he decides to bench Kosta and sub him up front later in the game, I'd prefer to see him on for Smeltz than Wood.

This. It's an option though, he seems more composed on the ball than Reid, and we do have a lot of centre backs, if not there I reckon he's a good shout for left back.

Where would Kosta be at with fitness though? His Russian season doesn't start till March and because he wasn't loaned anywhere he hasn't really played for several months

Herbert also confirmed Ryan Nelsen was "very keen to be part of it". Other offshore players who will be in the extended list at least include Jake Gleeson, Michael Boxall, Andy Boyens, Dan Keat, Sean Fallon, Winston Reid, Tommy Smith, Kosta Barbarouses and Chris Wood.

New Zealand Football: Strong All Whites squad named for Jamaica clash

February 9, 2012

AUCKLAND Ricki Herbert has named an 18 man All Whites squad for the ASB Summer International against Jamaica, with its strength defined as much by who he has had to leave out as much as who is included.

Led by new Tottenham signing Ryan Nelsen, the squad is bookended by uncapped Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Dan Keat and 73 cap veteran defender Ivan Vicelich.

The All Whites World Cup defensive trio Nelsen, Tommy Smith and Winston Reid could be reunited for the first time since South Africa although the form of Wellington Phoenix stopper Ben SigmUnd will give Herbert food for thought.

Glen Moss, who is recovering from a torn adductor, is one of two players not considered through injury along with Simon Elliott (hernia) so recent debutant Jake Gleeson joins Mark Paston as the second goalkeeper.

The attacking stocks include established pair Chris Killen and Shane Smeltz but there is room for in-form Bristol City marksman Chris Wood and Russian-based Kosta Barbarouses while Herbert hasnt been able to ignore the efforts of Jeremy Brockie, who has already notched eight goals in the A-League.

Phoenix centurion Tim Brown looks likely to anchor the midfield while Michael McGlincheys role at international level could continue to grow, and Marco Rojas, Leo Bertos and Tony Lochhead provide Herbert with plenty of options.

It means there is no room for World Cup squad members Rory Fallon, Andy Boyens, Jeremy Christie, Aaron Clapham or David Mulligan nor for players who have recent call ups like Craig Henderson, Michael Boxall and Michael Fitzgerald.

Herbert was pleased with the log jam for places.

I dont think a New Zealand coach has ever named a team where so many overseas pros have been left out and it has certainly been a hard squad to whittle down to just 18 players Herbert said.

When everyone is fit its clear I have some very tough choices to make and they are choices I dont make lightly. There are players not making this trip who have given a great deal to the success of the national team and will certainly do so again in the future.

The desire to represent New Zealand has always been high within this group and the healthy competition will continue through to starting spots.

Weve got players who performed at the World Cup, and others have forced their way in with their form for club or country in the time since then. Its a squad we think can send a message to CONCACAF.

There are a couple of young players I need to take another look at it and this will be our only chance to run our eye over Dan Keat before the qualifiers.

The international against 52 ranked Jamaica will be the All Whites last match before the long road to Brazil 2014 begins in June with the OFC Nations Cup. If New Zealand progresses through the 11 qualifiers in Stage 2 and 3 of the Oceania region a home and away playoff in November 2013 against the fourth best CONCACAF nation Jamaica is currently ranked fifth in the region to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Thats a very strong team. Other than the Elliott and Moss injuries, you have to argue that he has picked the strongest squad available. Fallon might have a whinge but is he setting the Scottish Premier League alight? Probably form was against him...
