Football's Media Coverage

What I'm interested in is what Chris Rattue and Murray Deaker think NZ football should do to get stronger. Giving up on the World Cup wouldn't do the trick.

TVNZ sports news is starting to beep me off, you cannot tell me they arent doing  this on purpose.

Has anyone else notice that during the last couple of sports news, its mostly been about npc rugby and that those BREAKING NEWS clips about what NPC rugby player is injured, is over the top.

I think our media is doing this. to make a smart ass point to Football fans, that "Sure the most important game in our history is coming up, but the big story really is Hawkes Bay versus Manawatu Rugby"

Its sickening.

to its credit TV3 chose to make a positive link between the Hondurans second ever qualification and our shot for glory  (Honduras last qualified in 82)

TV1 either lacked the wit or the will to do the same

TV3 appears to be making an effort

TV1 - who knows ...

Brett, with the greatest of respect...

It's not sickening for a News organization to report on a game that's being played over the next couple of days and not report on a game which is being played in a months time.

Make no mistake, the coverage (or lack there of) in the days leading up to the qualifier was a disgrace but you can't criticize TV1 because they lead with a story on a top of the table clash in this countries most popular game, especially when it is the next match of importance to be played. What other sport is being played on a thursday night?

To be fair, rugby is very popular in this country.  There are good crowds around most of the country for the AirNZ cup so deserves to lead sport coverage.

Several attempts to start a single professional Football team in the largest centre failed and we struggle to get 8k to 10k to a good Phoenix outfit.

However, saying that.  The All Whites and local Football should command equal footing in sports coverage to Rugby League.  I doubt the Kiwis could ever fill the ROF and I'm sure the Warriors home crowds can get pretty low, but they still seem to often get as much coverage as  Rugby Union.  That seems wrong to me.

Jolly, when the Warriors play badly they get the same numbers as when the Phoenix play well and easily eclipse them when there winning..

They play in a city with three times the market, and we have no idea what the Phoenix limit is if they go on a winning run.

Not to mention 12 or more years to establish that loyalty in Auckland.

The Phoenix limit in Wellington on winning run?    15-20k plus, if the Nix are in the top 4 near the end of the season, I reckon. As for the finals......

The warriors though get the fans through the gate - you can talk all of the potential you want but until we have the crowds they do we can begrudge them the coverage.  Hard to argue that Sth Auckland is the same market as the Nth SHore as well

They play in a city with a bigger market, yes, but 3 times? Your having a laugh.

No way you can call Albany and Mt. Smart the same Market.

It also helps that you can get an Adult season pass to the Warriors for as little as $140 (Tony P - take note!) , while general admission tickets are given away by the bucket load.

My original point was that I don't think Football should be comparing how it fares in the news against Rugby Union, rather it is a better to compare with other minority sports such as Rugby League, Hockey, Basketball etc.

Personally I think Rugby League gets far more coverage in the meda than it deserves and it would be great to see that sort of enthusism shown for Football.  A game that looks like it can sell out the ROF for the national team..

The coverage of both Football and Basketball in this country is disgusting.

We hardly ever hear about Ryan Nelson or Sean Marks, despite these two players playing in the toughest sports leagues in the world, The Premier League and the NBA, dont our media know that it's a 100 times harder to make these two sports comps than it is to make the All Blacks.

Yep, well as one Kiwi who came here as a 12 year old from the UK and was called a fag for playing football ( and by teachers) I have no respect for rugby at all. Couldn't give a toss when the All Blacks lose, in fact part of me quite enjoys it. As for TV coverage, (and I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but what the hell) there are a lot of people in this country with a vested interest in suppressing football's popularity and market share of sports revenue, and it is just possible that some of those people work in sports journalism and television. Lets not stoop to the panda sport level and just accept those who are not yet educated. I love rugby and was brought up being dragged out of bed to watch the early morning games on free to air tv. Later that day we  watched match of the day from the prem league in UK. I watch NPC on TV but go to the football. I go to the nix games cause the atmosphere is so f$#kin good and we have the ability. Minority sports are just that and the crowds at the AW game in Nov is going to get media to stand up and take notice. But only if we win. The ABs know all about that too.

Well Rugby was compulsory at my school and I knew a few of the Rugby kids saying the same thing about Association Football players. I just bounce back saying that they were just a bunch idiots who doesn't have the intelligence to play Soccer. In one inter-house game I hard tackle one of them in Rugby and told them that if they considered soccer players wussy or gay, then they must worse than a fag if they can't handle being to tackle by a soccer player. They don't speak much back after that game, because I basically had hard tackle most of the other team and was the Man of the match. Sure in the game, they pull a few dirty tricks, but in soccer, you pick up a few dirty one as well that you can use in Rugby too.

I had the privilege to grow up in the football stronghold of Karori. There were and are still are no rugby posts in Karori. I hardly knew what rugby was until the 1987 world cup (when i was 12 or 13), and certainly never watched until then.

Hi guys,

Writing to you from Rome, 6 weeks into a 9 week trip around the US, UK and Europe with my 'new' fiance.

I have managed to keep track of results on our journeys, but obviously not the coverage.

I totally understand your frustrations. I will be back on deck for the week leading up to the big game in wellington when i can assure you it will receive the coverage it deserves.

Cheers

Good man Gourdie.

One question, why the inverted commas around 'new'?  Are you in fact implying that your fiance is old?  Did you get ensnared by a cougar and have you been hanging out at Courtenay Place's "Electric Avenue"?

Enjoy the trip and we'll see you when you get back.

A recent opinion poll showed that 40% of NZ'ers were interested or very interested in football. That figure is hardly reflected in sports coverage in the media, particularly TV.

I think its a combination of apathy and  incompetance but there is definately an element of predjudice against football. Many sports journalists are bought up focusing on the big 2. Rugby and cricket. Many are middle aged or older who don't realise that the world has moved on from blind worship of everything rugby.

They feel their rugby world is under threat because they have screwed up the way they run their game.People are turning away from rugby and looking for alternatives. Football is the obvious choice hence the huge public interest in the WC qualifier. I am sure if the Phoenix started to win games and was near the top of the table then they too would draw in big crowds.

The funny thing is there is room for everyone. You don't have to put another code down. just follow and support whoever you like. I now find the whole rugby scene bores me shiitless but i do enjoy following the Warriors.
