In my experience sky & prime have the best sports coverage by far.
The 5:30 news bulletin on prime always covers football news

Yup totally. Although Doug Goliathy wasn't exactly pushing the game either in his show. Yelden was commentating on Dixon when I first turned on RS today so I guess I'll give him a pass.

Not sure of this being discussed elsewhere, but the quality of this morning's coverage was poor ...

- narrow screen (I got a couple of blue lines down the side on my Telly)
- poorly directed in terms of camera angles, replays etc
- poor commentary. Lot's of talk (too much), but very poor in supporting the flow of the game. And also very negative - Dewhurst was critiquing the game and players mistakes etc far too much (which follows I guess given his normal role)
- really poor sound. The crowd sound was muffled (as well as some constant prayer action in the background it seemed), and not really integrated with the commentary.

This leads to a couple of questions?
- was Dewhurst actually at the ground? Given that Harry Ngata was doing comments, it suggests not (I also cant; remember him commenting on anything out of shot).
- When Australia played there, did they have to put up with such a poor job? Maybe our Australian 'correspondents' could comment.

Maybe in this country we should just be thankful that we get such "soccer" games at all!

I know, I know, its serious!

One thing I noticed [with a few of my friends in particular] is the total ignorance people have towards the significance of last nights game. Some of my mates didn't even know it was on. It's sad but these are the types of people who will only react to the media hype to realise the significance of such an occasion. NZF and The All Whites should be absolutely pissed at the efforts of these guys because the support could have been doubled or at least extended beyond just the NZ football public and overseas fans.

I can see them changing things for the return leg but for me they've missed the boat already.

Fuck this stupid game

No matter what coverage they have tonight, their failure to preview the game is totally inexcusable and unredeemable. It is an absolute disgrace.

Now, of course, the TV networks will be the people thinking they should be first in line for every interview in the build up to the Wellington game. Well, I hope they get told to shove it.

If they don't reply to my email, in a way that shows an ounce of integrity, I'll do my first ever BSA complaint (isn't that what they suggest to you earlier ML??)

though I'll need to check out the permissable grounds first -  a state funded broadcaster failing to provide coverage of a socially significant event in a democracy might be my tack

either that or a hard copy letter to the Minister of Broadcasting

Correct on these two. The last All Whites game was in the 4:3 format as well for some reason?

I don't think the commentators were there to be honest. Commentary was a bit loud for the crowd noise.

reading the post by Topleft 07 - i wonder if NZF will write a formal lettter of complaint?!

it seems to me that  they should (i hope they don't abandon the idea because labour weekend is getting close and they need to pack to go to the bach)

They are exactly the same people who bought into the nhype around Tua vs Cameron, and actualyl thought Cameron had a chance.

Definately is an issue with football and some of the wider public.

Yeah and they got a massive audience and Tua made some fans.

They are generally your average kiwi who enjoys watching sport and supporting a kiwi team but on this occasion they were none the wiser.

Anyone just see TV3? Pathetic like 20 seconds including footage of our "goal" and they spent like 2 minutes on bloody Ironman.wellyphoenixfan2009-10-11 18:14:48

TV3 do a story, if that is what you would call it. Just the anchor doing a voiceover of some match footage. No analysis or interviews. Though in fairness to them it seems like they have condensed the whole bulletin around Bathurst

But Ironman gets a normal length story?

I turned over just as the Ironman story was ending so I can't comment but it was sh*t fullstop.

I just can't comprehend why they would have a leading story over Ironman compared to a first leg in our WCQ where we performed well. It is like saying more people care about Ironman which is just as believable as Golf highlights gain more viewers then Live A-League football.

Footage was of Wood taking the shot for his disallowed goal and a Paston goal kick... wtf?
You know we belong together...

Yeah it seams everything has taken the back seat to bathurst which is fair enough because it happens every year. Probably all the more reason they should have done a bigger story in the build up when they had a time slot for it. Waiting for TV1 sports news now, not getting my hopes up.

Prime had a reasonable "normal length" spot on their 5:30pm slot.

Some of you guys are far too generous man. The WOrld CUp is the biggest event on earth. THat was the country's biggest game of football in 27 years, football is still the biggest participation sport in this country, Nelsen is still the 2nd highest paid sportsmen from this country (probably), yet nothing all week on the game, nothing the night before, then second story behing 11th in the ironmnan (which happens every year) and twenty miserly seonds on the game itself.

Even if TVNZ dedicated the entire sports news to the game it would not be enough now.
We are conditioned to appalling football coverage in this country. We should have more realistic expecations.

TV1 - lead sport story.

Wow, semi-decent coverage. AND a comment from Ricky. Impressive.

Still - why was this not mentioned AT ALL last night on One?

Personally I thought we were better than 'lucky to draw' a few highlights don't really tell the whole story, yes Bahrain missed some very good opportunities but it wasn't as one sided as TV1 made out. Does anyone have TVNZ7? Does the coverage differ?

"No team [the Bahraini national football team] has ever dominated a sporting contest like they did today - and not won".

^FOr Deaker 2day, "No team [the Bahraini national football team] has ever dominated a sporting contest like they did today - and not won".

Deaker. New Zealand most successful sports broadcaster.
Never mind all the times that single Bahrain football side has dominated yet not won or qualified. theyve really blown some games in their history.

But who am i to question Deakers vast knowledge of Bahraini sports sides.
