Fuck this stupid game

To be fair - wasn't a bad hour (12-1pm) of radio.  He sounded happy enough for the AWs.

But why does he ALWAYS have to say "I'm not really a soccer fan" whenever he talks football?

We already know Deaker.

In fairness ML this should probably become the general Media Watch thread

Yeah, I think it just highlights NZ media's lack of interest/knowledge in football
Permalink Permalink

We shouldnt generalise though. Fairfax (Dom, Stuff, Press) did a great job, Herald did ok, Radio Sport, Prime also good. Those guys appreciated it was a big deal and gave the match a really whirl all week. It was TV3 and TV1 that completely and utterly fell over.

Yeah and thats been recognised in this thread also i believe. Therefore renaming it to a media watch thread would make sense since we're also adding deaker to the mix.

we will (no doubt) start to see the main Tv and radio networks pushing to be the ONE that is the football expert and get the news on the Wellington leg.

If (when) we qualify the media will be trampling over each other to be the voice of the team / fans, it will all be "The countdown to the cup".  If (perish the thought) we fail to win at home, football will agian be dropped like a hot potato

Some of you guys are far too generous man. The WOrld CUp is the biggest event on earth. THat was the country's biggest game of football in 27 years, football is still the biggest participation sport in this country, Nelsen is still the 2nd highest paid sportsmen from this country (probably), yet nothing all week on the game, nothing the night before, then second story behing 11th in the ironmnan (which happens every year) and twenty miserly seonds on the game itself.

Even if TVNZ dedicated the entire sports news to the game it would not be enough now.
We are conditioned to appalling football coverage in this country. We should have more realistic expecations.

I thought Ryan was the highest? and by some way?

The BSA cannot rule on editorial decisions especially on something that hasn't screened. It has to go to air to be subject to the BSA and then only if it breaches fairness, balance and decency guidelines. Nothing aired so the BSA cannot rule. The info from TV3 reception was incorrect.

We need to follow Australia Government approach to free to air TV for sports.

I really miss the old TV1 sports on the Saturday afternoon and Sunday Grandstand.

So who in the government will take up the banner??

Itd ruin sky. Then the government would have to pay up for all sporting events, and we'd end up with nothing much.

Maybe, I heard years ago the government wanted some leeway for delayed TV screening for nationally important sports that would go live on Sky TV. I know there was an one hour highlight on TV1 at 12 noon to 1 pm, but I wanted full coverage in real time and some analysis from a host to make the public feel welcome to the game. All we get is the cold shoulder and a edited game. Not really the full coverage that was promised for the government's behalf. Or was that only for All Blacks games??

There must be some legislation about coverage of important international games such as the AWs playoff game. I can't remember but did we have a host for the Italy friendly before the Confederation Cup??AllWhitebelievr2009-10-11 23:50:18

Ok yeah thatd be a fair comprimise. Maybe the government needs to work more closely for things like that, playing certain sports on free to air, live or delayed. The government should work together with sky for things like this. But i suspect sky wont be interested. Dont know the logistics of it being forced onto them

Well if that is the situation I'd argue there was a lack of balance in their reporting and stories. (Something that has aired so therefore BSA have jurisdiction).
But someway or another the message needs to get through. Also Deaker breach of decency guidelines? Maybe stretching it but why not?

Sounds unbelievable what they did...

We struggle in Australia as well... a method we found to be effective was for someone to find the email addresses of a number of important people... like CEO / Head of Sport / Sports Minster / Media Minster ... etc ...but a fair few ... Then simple fill their emails boxes everyday until you get a reaction...

This has worked in the recent past in Australia... not sure how far you could spread the emails but if you got 5, 000 people to send 3 emails a day you soon jam up the works.... within a week of this happening this changed... Ch 7 for example moved the Football coverage live to SBS ...

There where a number of people on the list  about 10 and we just kept emailing... Seven even went on  air to explain its position to the football community ... it was all BS from 7 we knew it but the point had been made...

The important thing is each email needs to be a little bit different...but heaps and heaps... government minsters react and so do CEO & General managers when their email box is so full they cannot work .. and that is why each email needs to be a little different ...

Keyboard Warriors ..unite ... post the details on some Aussie Football sites as well ...

Whos Spamming its still a free country people are allowed to voice their concerns unless its changed from when I was there. Spamming is one company sending out heaps of emails This on the other hand is many people sending emails to just a few noway is people sending emails in this way a criminal offense...it is a simple way of protesting ...

Whats wrong with a simple statement

I am very upset with the way TV 3 handed the WCQ. How can they give it no coverage at all after all the WC is the biggest single sporting event in the world..

I sent an email to the following people and am sharing with you their email address if you wish to also express your displeasure

Email addresses are often easy to guess, if not find.  TV3 is owned by Mediaworks. Mediaworks CEO is Brent Impey, so try brent.impey@tv3.co.nz or brent.impey@mediaworks.co.nz, or just use their general email, replies@tv3.co.nz.

For TVNZ, there is a generic news@tvnz.co.nz. Rick Ellis is the CEO, try the same trick with the email address: odds on it is rick.ellis@tvnz.co.nz.

The Broadcasting Minister is Johnathon Coleman, his email address is j.coleman@ministers.govt.nz, but you'll do better emailing Brendon Burns since the opposition is more likely to kick up a fuss, Brendon Burns is the Broadcasting spokesperson (brendon.burns@parliament.govt.nz).

Sports minister Murry McCully is at m.mccully@ministers.govt.nz and the opposition spokesperson is Chris Hipkins chris.hipkins@parliament.govt.nz

My suggested list is:
m.mccully@ministers.govt.nz

I'd also suggest emailing them one at a time, and try to personalise it - why you think they should care.  The spam issue is irrelevant here, you're not sending unsolicited emails getting them to click on dodgy links.

I think that it was appalling, and might give a few of them a rark up (I watched both channels on Saturday and saw what was covered, the football was mentioned at the end among a list of things the Sports anchor could watch, on tv3 news, and there was nothing at all on TV1).

It's a given that coverage will be much better for the home leg. No reporter there makes them look bad, so they try to pretend that it is not happening (of course after the game there is plenty of footage they can use to cover for the fact they they sent no one.

But that is the issue - they didn't send a reporter, and didn't want to cover it because of that.
