why are we looking past 5.1 - he holds nationality based on citizenship not residence
So it would appear that the rules go against the principle in this case? Unintended consequences etc?

when reading the rules, read 'nationality' as 'which country can a player represents.'
S6 isn't relevant as it relates to players who can currently represent two nations through the eligibility test (birthplace of players, parents or grand parents). Marco for example. He could have played for NZ or Chile.
S8 isn't relevant as he is only able to represent SA at present. Think Dura or Vinnie or Daniel in this instance.
S7 is the important section as he is trying to aquire a new country to play for. Based on those rules he can't until he turns 23. The rationle for that is to protect against European countries from poaching talent from Africa.
My bet is that it was a calculated gamble. That if they present a passport then everything else is deemed in line. My other bet is that someone tipped Vanutu off.
The final is underway, could be a meaningless match if NZF win their challenge
Upon reading this my body temperature went from mildly amused to fn outraged and steaming!

Yes but in his case he would have got citizenship based upon residence and thereafter time criteria.

One thing is for sure and that is out of this the Oceania Confederation continues to make itself look like a 3rd world backwater that it is and a laughing stock not to be taken seriously. It does not deserve direct entry into any World Cup finals.

And yet this case is clearly not the same rationale.

i think Tyler, Thomas, Payne and Howieson in hindsight are now really pleased they didn't make this trip.

Must have thought highly of him.

I want my money back. Donated funds to the Vanuatu Cyclone Appeal (and I think the Government put in a million or two). The Island nations have connived with this?!? And I'm sorry Roy but if Fiji was also involved in some secret meeting we really need to revisit that connection too. I want my money back.

But this would prevent all migrants from playing from their new country until 23. That will never stand

Wow harsh ruling considering the player has lived in NZ since he was 3.

Jason Pine said the same thing on Veitch's show. Are we sure he only came to New Zealand in 2009? What is your source that he was here since he was 3?

Who did we appeal to though? OFC isn't big enough for their to be anyone independent is there.
Look anyone who has spoken to anyone who has played in the islands or dealt with OFC will have reported that there is all sorts of funny business that goes on up there. Someone mentioned it earlier, but there are all sorts of odd links between OFC funding, David Chung and his supply of various things like uniforms etc. Look at the way NZF has been manoeuvred off the OFC executive committee - this is not a serious organisation.

Martin said given the circumstances regarding the process around the decision, Sunday night’s Olympic Qualifying final should have been postponed. Representations have been made to OFC, FIFA and the Pacific Games Council supported by NZ Olympic Committee and Sport New Zealand. At this point no response has been received from Oceania Football.

NZF statement: Pacific Games Player Eligibility (updated)
Sunday 12 July, 2015
For immediate release
New Zealand Football CEO Andy Martin confirmed on Sunday night that the national body have been working with their lawyers throughout the day to challenge the process followed and decision made by Oceania Football Confederation regarding the eligibility of Deklan Wynne for the Olympic Qualifying tournament in Papua New Guinea.
The decision, which determined Wynne was ineligible due to him acquiring a new nationality under article 7 of the Regulations Governing the Application of the FIFA Statutes, was reached by an OFC disciplinary committee hearing early on Sunday morning (NZ time) of which New Zealand Football was not aware after being told the matter would be referred to FIFA.

Representations have been made to OFC, FIFA and the Pacific Games Council supported by NZ Olympic Committee and Sport New Zealand. At this point no response has been received from Oceania Football.
“While we firmly believe tonight’s match should have been delayed, we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that any final decision is only reached after a proper and fair process has been carried out. We trust that Oceania Football Confederation will change its position and conduct that proper and fair process.”
No further comment will be made while the challenge process continues.

Absolutely, i'm just super fudgeed off about this. There has been shark going on up there for a long time and we've (NZ) held off pointing it out to attempt to curry favour but we're getting screwed and it will keep happening

If someone wasn't born here or have parents born here etc, does this 5 year rule post the age of 18 apply to all national teams (under 20's, under 17s, national team etc). I assume it does but just confirming?
A lot of blame here on the OFC and general mud throwing at the OFC because we fielded a player who seemingly was ineligible under FIFA rules. Can't see where OFC are to be blamed. Exact same would happen to a nation in Europe, Asia, or wherever to a team who did that.
Edit: Of course, if it turns out he is actually eligible, game on for mud throwing!!
By the way I am watching the game and the suggestions that the standard in the island teams is getting better looks pretty far fetched to me

Do Fiji have a few (or a lot) of their Under-20s playing?

This makes it sound like NZ didn't know the hearing was happening let alone have the opportunity to present a defence. Therefore even if they have previously got approval from Fifa for wynne to play they didn't get the opportunity to show it

Must do.
And therefore, given worldwide migration patterns, this can't be the final ruling. Genuinely how can it be?

This is so much more entertaining than simply winning (or losing) against Fiji and waltzing off (or not) to the Olympics. Love the drama.
Roux - 3 Wynne - 14/15
http://content.radionetwork.co.nz/weekondemand/rad...
Pine says at about 7:20 "Wynne came to New Zealand as a very young boy....he came at the age of about 2 or 3 I believe." If you listen to Wynne talk he does have a touch of the South African accent but it doesn't sound like he came here at 14 (
).
It's not definitive but what is the source that he came here at 14/15? Google doesn't provide me anything.
