Cheers guys for the replies. I'm only after one ticket as on my own cus my kiwi mates are not allowed!. I've got a couple of mates from UK meeting me over there but that'll be later on as they are going quarters and semis in the hope that England will make it, which is always tempting fate.

Would be good to have a pre-tour p!ss up (maybe end of May) at BB or 4 Kings with everyone who is booked on the bus and to get some contact numbers for meeting at the airport.

I'll probably get a South African sim card as no doubt it will cost a bloody fortune to roam over there!.

Cheers

Hi all, what immunisations do we need for South Africa? Other than Feverish getting VD, what else is risky and where do we get the info.

Its no longer a problem.

Those wishing to visit the townships should only do so as part of an organised tour by a reputable company.

From the Travel Doctor:

Hi Stu,

Thanks for your message. Lucky you going to the World Cup!
There would be a few things we'd recommend for South Africa and especially Kruger National Park.

The basics would be Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid (depending on a few things including the duration of your trip) and for Kruger National Park, malaria tablets would definitely be recommended.

We recommend coming in about 2 - 3 months before travel so coming in sometime soon would be absolutely fine.
I have attached a price list as well so you can do some budgetting beforehand as these things do cost a bit.

I hope this is helpful.

Its no longer a problem.

Getting them at your normal doctor can be cheaper, apparently, if you feel like looking into it.

that's what I was thinking too. I've been told to go to my normal GP as it's suposed to be way cheaper.

When my sister went to Nepal it was well over $800, possibly over a grand so that isn't too bad.

Harden up!

Alcohol will deal with most of these and is much cheaper.

Saw my GP today and in terms of health precautions he just said to take stuff to ward off malaria (due to Kruger Park Tour) and to make sure my tetanus was up to date....

saw mine today.  Gotta get some blood test done to see what I am immune to.  Gave me pills for Malaria, Diarrhea, pain killers (for the stabbings) and itchy bit cream.

Just looked at my blood test form  getting tested for 12 things, including immunity to Hep A and C, and something to do with my renal

Why would you need pills for Malaria, it is winter there in SA.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

It's a requirement for visiting there.

Three for me, and two for them.

Yes. It's a requirement for many countries (especially third world) to have vaccinations before entering no matter where you are travelling from.

Three for me, and two for them.

My doctor is quoting

Combined hepatirix for hep a & typhoid
$110

diptheria/tetanus - free

So, cheaper than the travel doctor.

Also, you only need Yellow Fever if you have come from a country which has it, which won't apply to us (going from info on embassy websites)

Roughly the same for me.

Plus $25 for a flu shot, which includes the swine vac.

... I was restraining myself ...

also, my doctor recommended Polio vaccine too, though I didn't get it as I'd already had one in each arm ...
