NZF. A quite breathtaking shambles to the death.

Three for me, and two for them.

earlier today, ricki was reported to have said:

''We'll see, that certainly hasn't been agreed yet, by any stretch,'' Herbert said, when asked if he was viewing the match as his last hurrah.

now we  have an NZF press release, with no quotes from ricki, thanking him for his time

what a complete fuck up! Where is the NZF's brain? on the day before a huge match you make a statement saying the coach is gone? why not the day after? We need a complete clean slate with all the heads to roll from manager up!

Thanks Ricki, take Frank & Fred with you!
It was probably the only sure fire way to ensure ricki goes out with plenty of goodwill.
Does make me wonder more about who picked the starting XI though.

Ricki announced he's stepping down in an exclusive  interview with Gourdie this afternoon:
Maybe not a bad idea so people can give him send-off at the game tomorrow:
BROADCAST VERSION:
COMPLETE 18 MINUTE INTERVIEW:

"But this afternoon, even before he'd told his players, Herbert said that when the All Whites' World Cup campaign ends - so will his tenure as coach.

"I've been dedicated and loyal to the group, but really feel now that should we get beaten on Wednesday there's a clean pathway for a new manager to come in," he said.

.....Since 2010, the team hasn't progressed the way many had expected, punctuated by a disappointing display in Mexico.

Herbert accepts he's accountable for that, but he hopes New Zealand Football heeds the lessons learned, for the benefit of his successor.

"The team needs to be prioritised," he says. "I'd be suggesting planning and vision and there needs to be a big of backing and belief a side can go back to the World Cup."

Herbert says he's been lucky to coach the All Whites for eight years, and whatever happens tomorrow night, he intends to enjoy it.

He's ready for the next step.

"All I'd say is I've done nothing but give everything I possibly can. Hopefully the fond memories of 2010 can be a reflection of what I'm about."

It was exclusive on TV3 news so NZF have followed with a press release

Possible theories:

Ricki was always going to resign but did not want to put the focus on him so did the old 'we'll see' line.

Ricki decided he wanted a send off

Something happened this afternoon whereby Ricki basically said "stuff you" and resigned or NZF said "stuff you, you are gone". After all, he has been relatively defiant about staying on.

Ricki was told a while back that he was not going to be kept on and its only just come out now.

The board have listened to him in the last few days in the press and decided "Enough"

As someone else mentioned, this was not his team that he would pick. Has he been told to pick this side and not happy about it?

Even Ricki has had enough of NZF and said "4 more years? No thanks"

Seriously. WTF. The day before the All Whites biggest game in four years?  Utter shambles.  Or what Buffon II said.  Whatever the reality of the situation, why can't NZF and Ricki agree on a suitable exit strategy?  Very unprofessional.  Imagine what the players feel. Christ on a bike.

Hey you bastards I'm still here.

He say's

"Should Wednesday  be the end of the world cup campaign then he will not be re-applying for a national team all white position."

Don't worry guys he's just that confident that we are going to win by at least 4-0 tomorrow! When does his contract run out? What a good cunt Ricki took a team to the world cup and didn't lose a game then steps down before being made to by NZF. I wonder if Neil or any of the senior players have anything to do with it or whether he just decided to step down..
I think this starting XI was picked by Ricki but I hope him stepping down is what's best for the team. I just hope NZF sort their shit out and we get a decent and driven head coach. I'm a bit annoyed he made this announcement tonight just before a the big game.. He does look pretty cut up about it though.. He deserves a good send off (I hope its after the world cup)

To be fair, considering what he has done, he has earned a send off. Granted the timing of the message is wacky as hell but he has earned a send off. We have no idea of the circumstances or motivation to resign.

No matter what is said to the contrary its probably a  combo of Ricki's narcissism and superiority delusions.

We have all seen it with the Nix and the AW's many times

Do agree he deserves a send off

I reckon this is a little bit of truth in all of it to be honest. I'm not one to blow it up into a conspiracy but I think there is just enough of each point to be relevant.

I think something like this if I were to create a story:

After ONC, he is told that he still has a job but needs to get to the WC or he is gone. In the ensuing months and looking at the shambles of NZF with everything that has happened, he has probably decided that enough it enough and he wants out after the campaign is done but keeps it to himself. They go up to Azteca and get smashed. Ricki goes on attack with the big "fuck you all I get no respect I'm staying to the end" speech. The board see all this press and the black out when they arrive back and say 'enough of this fucker' and Frank issues a presser of 'Oi prick, we'll advertise'. Ricki meets with Frank and something is said like 'great timing mate, I've still got a job to do' and Frank tells him that after the ONC disaster that he was on thin ice and the reality is, he is goneburgers because of the 1st leg result. Because they are giving FDJ the top job, they'll give him his old job but only if he walks today. Ricki keeps with the defiant line in the press but probably weighs it all up and finally decides that he does not need this bullshit and decides to get out and announce it, ensuring he gets a send off. With the last game on the way out, the best way to look like a champ is give the press and public the team they want. If they get tonked, he gets proven right for picking his favourites and if not, he looks like a champ for playing the new breed.

Not exactly a JFK conspiracy but I reckon there is enough in there. with little bits from each and the timing and other bits are not far off. i also think there are some people that need an ass kicking and to look up the definition of timing in the dictionary.

You really think that a coach who took NZ to levels of success not seen in decades would have a better send-off than the usual trolls around here calling him a deluded narcissist with no class. It's "scapegoat" season again, only with coaches instead of players.

Agreed. In terms of public image I've seen many narcissistic coaches with a superiority complex but Ricki Herbert sure ain't one of them. But then Auskiwi is a fatuous Ricki-hater from way back.

I didn't say he has no class. S

It is clear to anyone that uses both eyes that his is indeed a delusional narcissist.

Haven't we all seen evidence of the with the Nix and AW's enough to know it's true?

I did say he deserved a send off but then you miss that as it wouldn't suit your self righteous agenda, would it

No scapegoats.

Look, good on him for helping NZ stand up in the last WC.

I think that Sir Ricki got all the credit he deserved after the world cup, and deserves nothing more than being publicly sacked now.  If he wanted a massive "send-off", he should have walked away when his stock was high - 3 years ago.

To me, it is odd to give him a massive send-off when the last 12 months of his tenure has been a massive cluster-fuck

I thought it was well known that his contract was until the end of the WC.  That's probably tomorrow am UK time.  He's done some great things for us and has decided to knock it on the head on his terms before NZF announced that he would be getting a P45.  As we all know he's been ice skating since the Solomons.  I think this is a good way for NZ to show Ricki (Blanco,Turner) and others who probably won't wear white/black again, a final thank you for your hard work over the last decade or so.

+1. He got his recognition at the Halberg Awards for his contribution to the 2010 world cup campaign, which was imo, the pinnacle of his career.
What has he done since then to deserve further recognition? Unless you want to acknowledge his contribution to the Confederations Cup last year and the 2014 World Cup Campaign - no other Manager has ever behaved in the manner he has - excluding National Players playing professionally and instead continuing to select amateur players who he wouldn't even sign at the Phoenix, not to mention selecting players without clubs.

Doloras, he he's had the credit and adulation for the World Cup qualification and success - he got that at the time during 2010 and 2011. Just because he's retiring now does everyone have to go over all of this again?  It's been and gone now - it was great at the time but in the end right now we're actually looking at a really disappointing period for the team and it's bloody hard to expect people to start jumping round again celebrating because of some results we got in 2010.  Do we really need to thank him all over again - that just ignores what's happening RIGHT NOW which is far more important.

The last three years with the AWs have been really poor any way you look at it.  I've always been far more accepting of Ricki with the AWs as it's a much harder job than the Phoenix - but you cannot ignore that the team is in a pretty awful state.

When he says that he may not be finishing as coach and the governing body put out an announcement saying he's finished?

I think FVH has been more critical than I expected and with talk of board meetings after the team no show with the media and fairly decisive action here, maybe Ricki won't end up with the technical director role that we've been expecting?

He hardly has responsibility for Reid and Nelsen not turning up in the Solomons.  He is hardly responsible for the loss of Brown, Elliot, Nelsen and Paston. Yeah Christie is an odd call but tbh he's not much worse than any of our other options in midfield.  I wouldn't have had him but I'd struggle to name anyone who is a significant step up.

People seem to think we have all these youth players that will magically make us better when they have (in the main) offered fuck all at age group level.  Some people need to accept that we had a generation of players who were key to what we achieved (albeit lead by Ricki) and we simply don't have players of the same quality.  That's hardly the coaches fault.

* He hardly has responsibility for Reid and Nelsen not turning up in the Solomons - we are playing the island teams, and missing two players.  He should have been able to cope.
* He is hardly responsible for the loss of Brown, Elliot, Nelsen and Paston - aside from Brown, it was hardly a surprise that guys in the mid to late 30's were going to retire.  He should have been planning for this to happen, bringing young guys into the squad and giving them game time so we were not in a position where we had no one with any experience to replace them.
* Yeah Christie is an odd call but tbh he's not much worse than any of our other options in midfield - I would suggest that he is a great deal worse, and even if he is only not much worse, bottom line is that he is worse and should never in a million years been starting a game of that significance.
* I wouldn't have had him but I'd struggle to name anyone who is a significant step up - Killen?
It is not a secret that the players that we have now are no where near as strong as what we had 4 years ago, but it is also not a great surprise that a number of these players have left, and those that remain are not as good as what they were.  The problem with what Sir Ricki's approach has been that we have just meandered along, getting worse, with the same players.  If players like Lochead and Bertos has been moved on and replaced by younger players (not necessarily better players) then people would be able to see that there was some kind of thought process or logic in what we were doing.  As it has panned out, we have integrated no new players and having to depend on 30 something players who haven't kicked a ball in anger in a year or so.

I think the most frustrating part of the last 3 years of AWs games was Ricki's insistence on playing the 3-4-3. It worked at the WC because we had 3 good centre backs and 3 good strikers and the passing range of Elliott to connect them. The back 3 worked because Nelsen was able to organize it and make sure everyone was marking who they should be and positioned correctly. Without Nelsen at the back or Elliott in midfield it never ever looked like working properly. None of our defenders play for clubs who play a back 3 and always looked lost without Nelsen there. We never found another link man to connect the attack and defence. Yet Ricki just kept playing it because it was his magnum opus. Even in that first leg against Mexico with no Reid he played the back 3 and it got torn to shreds. Now a back 4 might have as well but at least with a back 4 Ivan could have plugged up the midfield and Smith and Durante might have had a better understanding of their roles in the formation.

Yeah the national team coach doesn't have control over what players he can pick from but he does have control over how he sends them out there and for 3 years we've been a tactical shambles.

Looks a bit to me like Ricki's TV3 interview presented NZF the perfect opportunity to back him into a corner by officially announcing his retirement and they have jumped at the chance.

Makes me wonder too how much of today's team selection may have been taken out of his hands.
